Deters on jail tax

The anti-jail tax group put out this release today saying that not only is the Cincinnati FOP against the sales tax (which we knew), but that Prosecutor Joe Deters has refused to endorse the tax. Interesting.

Enquirer reporter Sharon Coolidge asked him. Here's what Deters had to say. Note: Commissioner Pat DeWine is against the sales tax. Commissioners David Pepper and Todd Portune support it.

Deters: "I have made it very clear that I have clients for and against the levy and although I have not specifically endorsed this issue I have made it clear wherever I go we need a new jail.
I’m not taking position on whether this is the best way to go about it.

I am attorney for (Pat) DeWine, as a commissioner, and David Pepper, who is a commissioner. And I am the sheriff’s lawyer.

Last year was different, it was a unanimous vote. I didn’t have a client who were in conflict."

"I didn’t have a client who were in conflict."

Deters needs to hire someone in his office who can use proper English.

How about "I didn't have clients..." or "I didn't have a client who was in conflict..."???

Oh, and Deters' brother is running his mouth left and right about how we need the jail tax. I think we can all read into that.

Does anyone believe this crock? Deters is, first and foremost, a republican hack. If this was the republican plan he'd be doing ads for it.

The jail tax leaders (Pepper, Portune, Leis & Deters) have lost all credibility.

Just one example: in his Sunday (10/6) Enquirer guest column, Deters explained the dire need for a new jail, citing the "exploding murder rate". This in spite of the prior Enquirer report that the 2007 murder rate was down very significantly from 2006. This morning the Enquirer repeated the same statistics.

This along with the Leis/Portune display of assault weapons leads me to believe they all graduated from the same "leader school" as W.

They all insult my intelligence. I'm not the smartest but I'm not stupid.

Clients in conflict?

Deters, what about your MOST important client - the public?

It seems you have forgotten about the little guy and are only focused on the politicians, who , after all, are serving US.

Deters, you have a duty to assess the situation and take a position on behalf of the public that elected you -- they ARE your real and undisputed client that trumps any other controversies your office is representing.

Dirty Deeds Deters is playing politics with his elective office - is is just plain cowardice not to take a stand when the issue so intimately involves his office.

Do you support the status quo or do you want to reform the justice system and really do something to protect the community?

Sitting on the sidelines?
Say it isn't so Joe, say it isn't so!

You ever heard of the phrase, IM NOT MY BROTHERS KEEPER.

I know which brother you speak of so why don't you try saying it to his face. He will probably tell you that he and his brother have taken different stances on plenty of issues. He will then probably call you a foul name to your face, but unlikely that he will go on some anonymous blog and rip you for having your own opinion.

Joe Deters has a nice smile.

The new "jail" would be a substitute for our sad drop in centers. Why not propose a levy to house these people instead of proposing a "multi-use facility"? Too, the new CPS levy equates to $13,903.00 per student annual TUITION, monthly expense based on twelve months of $1,158.58 per student for a FAILING SCHOOL SYSTEM. Current annual budget for the CPS $428,576,920.00. New levy would add $65,000,000.00 for a total annual budget of $493,576,920.00 to EDUCATE/BABYSIT..35,500..STUDENTS.
No wonder most intelligent people have moved out of the city. Many people HATE it that they commute for work. The city and county are really SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT.

The "brother" didn't make many friends when he was speaking up for the jail tax at the last club meeting despite the non-rino's in the room obvious opposition to issue 27. Issue 27 will go down along with the rinos that supported it

Anon 2:35,

What should we say to Deters' brothers' face, that we oppose the jail tax? He already knows that. For the record, he didn't call us any foul names.

I was in the room at that meeting, and I saw nothing but support for issue 27. As a matter of fact, the opposition speaker left after realizing he had no support. Deters brother just said he felt the oppositions figures were suspect, and he wished they would oppose the tax with real, not fabricated stats.

Every politician says they will put cops on the streets, but what are all these new cops going to do with the people they arrest?

If you think there is room and we don't have a problem, go down to room A on a Saturday morning and watch court and see how many sheriffs releases there are.

I just find it freaknig hilarious that the clowns on here arguing over Deters' brother think they were at the same meeting. Like there's only been one.

at 12:14 PM, October 16, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

And, doesn't Deters have more than one brother?

at 12:52 AM, October 17, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

So this essentially confirms that Joe Deters is neutral on Issue 27, right? He's only been saying it for months.

VOTE NO ON ISSUE 27!

I think Deters is a tough but fair guy who deals with what he has to work with. Because the jail tax failed I won't go Downtown anymore. Last Sept. I was robbed of my watch on a well lit street...and with cops being laid off right after xmas it's just going to get worse down there. And people criticize me for staying in my suburb?
