Tarbell's Out

Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell's not saying exactly what he'll be doing after his resignation's effective Sept. 3. And neither Chris Bortz nor Jeff Cramerding are returning phone calls this afternoon about who will replace Tarbell.

The Charter Party did e-mail out this statement:

"The Charter Committee respects Vice-Mayor Jim Tarbell’s decision to resign from city council, but certainly not without a great deal of sadness. There is no person in this city who loves Cincinnati more than Jim Tarbell. He has dedicated his life to preserving, improving, and building our city. He has always steadfastly believed in the bright future of Cincinnati and has effectively carried the message of our city’s beauty and potential throughout each of our neighborhoods and indeed throughout the country. Charter is proud of its long association with Councilman Tarbell for he continued the Charter tradition of putting the city’s interests first as well as focusing on a long term vision for our city.

The Charter Committee thanks Vice-Mayor Tarbell for nine years of stellar service to the city of Cincinnati. Jim leaves city council having accomplished a great deal, but we are sure he will continue working to make Cincinnati a better place. We know he will do this because that is who Jim Tarbell is."

Read the story here. More to come on who gets the two months of incumbency before the November election.

last I checked, Cramerding wasn't on Council.

Is Bortz the only person Tarbell named to appoint his successor?

Kaup must really be sucking in the polls. Bates has her CPS incumbency to buoy her, but Kaup needs Channel 23 facetime.

Wonder what Jim's payout is?

good riddance to the worthless vice mayor who got elected with no effort or campaigning simply because he used to own a bar and because he'd go to the opening of a door if it got him in the paper

Thanks for the great memories, Mr. Tarbell! I'll miss you. Thanks for the hard line support you gave to the neighborhoods when everyone else was waffling, picking their noses & digging in their ears.

It's not gonna be Bates or Kaup, I can tell you that.

I think Roxanne Qualls is coming out of political retirement and getting the appointment. If so, the pressure is on a few incumbants!

Of course it'll be Bates or Kaup. It has to be a current candidate or they waste the slot. Why would Tarbell resign early to give it to a non-candidate?

I heard it was Smitherman! LMAO...

It will be qualls

Will Qualls job at NKU allow her to serve on Council?

What people should remember about Qualls:

More people left Cincinati under her watch than at anytime in the past 30 years.

Racial strife, that spilled over in the riots, began and festered on her watch.

She accomplished nothing.

My new dream slate:

Qualls
Bates
Kaup
Harris
Bortz
Eby

With these six, I wouldn't really care who filled the other 3 seats. It'd be the best Council ever.

She will definitely have to resign her SORTA board spot... right??

Besides Cramerding I heard it is a relative unknown from Bortz's campaign, Kit Higgs, who is a "deputy" campaign manager, but that has got to be just a rumor.

Personally, I believe it is Roxanne, although it would be a nice boost to Kaup or Bates.

yea...call em the do nothing party

Since Chris Bortz is trying to purchase the Republican Party's endorsement, he's going to appoint a Republican to this seat, right?

No way George Vincent would sell the party's endorsement to a guy who picks a Charterite or a Democrat to fill a vacant seat. He's not that stupid.

anon 11:36- I'm guessing you're not very old if that would be 'the best council ever". Please, 3 rookies, a Rethug and Bortz who only cares about big business? How much are their campaigns paying you to blog this BS? Since you're probably one of their staffers we can find out what you're paid anyway.

I like Roxanne and am glad she will be appointed to Tarbell's council seat. I didn't always like everything she did- for instance, pushing the original street humps on Edwards Rd, along with Portune and Heimlich. But I do feel, in general, that she is a class act. Will she then run in the general election?
Did I hear that Tarbell is going to run for Board of Education, or was that a joke?

I like Roxanne's street humps.

Her humps, her humps, her lovely traffic-calming Lady Bumps.

Sorry- easy target.

Jim,

My opinion of your politics has gone down since you named Qualls as your replacement. I know for a fact that she is NOT the best you could have done for your beloved Cincinnati. You did not serve our city with this appointment. Let someone who is fresh come in and get things done. What is your problemn with Melanie Bates?
