Anti-Coulter groups plan counterattack

Groups typically attacked by conservative commentator Ann Coulter said today they are happy she plans a visit to Xavier University next month. In fact, they are asking for $5 donations for student groups "who represent the values Coulter vilifies in her speeches and writings."

The visit, as reported by the Xavier University Newswire, is at a time to be announced on Sept. 6 at the Schiff Family Conference Center at Cintas Center. Groups opposed to Coulter's views are planning a separate forum and rally, also on campus, where they say they will distribute the funds.

Coulter's speaking fees range from $20,000 to $30,000, but funds are being raised by the College Republicans to sponsor her talk, which is open to the public. That equals about $5 for every student enrolled at Xavier, according to Bo Shuff, director of education and public policy for Equality Ohio, a gay rights group. "Donations are starting to come in,'' Shuff said this afternoon.

The groups leading the "counter Coulter" effort range from Xavier student groups to local groups like Equality Cincinnati, Democracy for Cincinnati and the Cincinnati chapter of the National Organization for Women. National organizations like People for the American Way and the Human Rights Campaign also have joined in.

"Our goal was to empower student groups on Xavier's campus that seek to expand the conversation beyond divisive rhetoric," Shuff said. "We hope the money helps students to promote real dialogue about American values like compassion and civil rights."

Coulter is a columnist, political commentator and best-selling author. Her candor, including remarks critical of the widows of firefighter victims from Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and, more recently, aimed at Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, attract national media attention.

"Every protest and every heckler she attracts wherever she appears means more publicity for her and bigger speaking fees," said Patrick McNearny, president of the Xavier Gay-Straight Alliance. "We are glad to be able to do something different that is a win for the Xavier community."

"Whenever someone as divisive as Ann Coulter comes to our state, we can't just sit on our hands," Brian Rothenberg, executive director of ProgressOhio, said in a separate news statement. "We can stoop to her level, or we can take the opportunity to promote important values like diversity, compassion, and equality. We chose the latter."

Good for Xavier to counteract her hatred with such a positive endeavor. I hope Xavier's progressive organizations earn thousands through this tactic!

Jon Craig's liberal bias is glowing so brightly, we can see it 100 miles away. He seesm to have forgotten how journalism works since Strickland and all the other Democrats came into office.

That was a nice Strickland press release he put his name on the other day with all those appointments. So far, it has not occured to him to tell us how much money, if any, they gave to Teddy and the Dems. I guess that sort of info is only important when there's a Republican governor.

How about the big donors in those just-released campaign finance reports? Who's paying Strickland? How about Marc Dann and his gambling cronies ponying up big cash, then he decides to re-classify them so they can enter Ohio against the will of the voters?

Hi Jon,
I'm glad you felt it necessary to contact Xavier CR's about this. Most of your facts are incorrect and it would be nice to see a small attempt at being down the middle on this issue.

funny how the article describes coulter's past comments as "candor." when others say the things she has, they're typically (and rightfully) called mean-spirited, homophobic, racist and/or *moronic.*

why not bring in william buckley or hell, even newt gingrich -- in other words, a conservative who can lead a *constructive* debate and offer ideas, not just one-liners and vitriol. coulter only lowers the debate to the gutter and inspires little more than hatred.

Having someone like Ann Coulter speak at Xavier will be a real jolt for its liberal administration. Xavier is supposed to be promoting Catholic values but like most Jesuit educational institutions it does nothing to promote them on campus. I am glad the College Republicans are willing to bring some equal time to the other side.

Hi All, My name is Chris Wimsatt and I am the Chairman of the Xavier College Republicans. I must first say that this article was a surprise to myself and the club. We were not contacted before the article ran...unlike our counterparts at the Gay Straight Alliance. Mr. Craig, at least have the decency to contact the Xavier College Republicans before you run an article on them.

Ann Coulter is an excellent choice for our community as she will bring controversial items to light in a humorous and bold manner. If you fail to understand political satire and cannot enjoy a good laugh, feel free to stay home. All others are welcome!

As for our counterparts who hide under the guise of crafty names such as Gay Straight Alliance and Progress Ohio, organizations which openly promote gay activism and highlight 'diversity', your opinions are welcome but they will be criticized and picked apart. As Republican, I cringe at the term 'diversity' because diversity is not what made this country great, rather unity. Miss Coulter will serve as the medium to attract attention to our differences in hopes to unite the community in one direction or the other...preferably in the conservative direction.

Please stay tuned for the event time. We are still working on the event and hope to finalize it soon. Student tickets are free with a valid Student ID. Public admission is $5 per ticket.

If Ann Coulter is supposedly representing Catholic values, God help Xavier and the Catholic Church. Her hate speech alone is antithetical to all that Christ came to teach.
If College Republicans at Xavier want to further their cause, bring in someone of whom conservatives can be proud, such as Wm. Buckley or Patrick Buchanan, or anyone of the number who can proudly claim to have Catholic values. How about Sam Brownback, who recently converted to the Catholic church?

Mr/s Wimsatt: "E Pluribus Unum."

Without diversity there is no unity; witness the yes-man echo chamber of the Bush Administration which is autocratic dictatorialism in its uncritical intellectual mobocracy.

Mr. Craig: "Anti-Coulter groups plan counterattack." The premise being that Coulter will be "attacking"?

I liked Richard Belzer's description of her best: she's a fascist party doll.

While on campus please ask Ms. Coulter where she lives- last I heard she had 5 or so addresses/ voter registrations on file and her "home" county election authorities wanted to have speaks with her.

Finally: Ann Coulter = Montana Moorehead.

I find it rather sad that of all the public speakers that are available for the tens of thousands they are paying Coulter, the Xavier republicans couldn't find anyone better than Coulter to raise the level of debate. Instead they settle on a divisive info-tainer.

One would think that college kids, those getting a "higher" education, particularly at a school of Xaviers quality, could make a bteer choice. Looks more like ideology ruled the day rather than intelligence and reason.

The liberals who attack Ms. Coulter and her right to free speech are textbook examples of hypocrites. Liberals like to dish the attacks out, but go into vapor lock at the thought of someone returning intellectual fire at them. Ms. Coulter has never stated anything to or about a liberal that has not been already stated by at least one or more liberals to or about some conservative. Ms. Coulter does a most excellent job of highlighting the aforementioned hypocrisy both in terms of her personal response to it and the personal atttacks made against her she must endure by these so-called forces of tolerance and open-mindedness. As has been pointed out, liberal tolerance and open-mindedness do not go past anything that liberals do not like or support. Liberalism as it is practiced today by the leftists in this country is morally bankrupt and those who push it in clear need of mental assistance being that most of them practicing it are bipolar if not out right schizophrenic.

FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS VOTE DEMOCRAT!

Sure would like to see Max Blumenthal in attendance with his camera to examine the "pro-war" Xavier college Republicans -- and just see how many are willing to put their money were there mouths are and sign up for military service after graduation. My guess is the experience for these soft handed children of privilege would be similar to that of Generation Chickenhawk: The Unauthorized College Republican National Convention Tour per the following URL:

http://maxblumenthal.com/archives/171

Of course, the leadership and pundits that these authoritarian followers endorse are all draft dodgers: Bush, Cheney, Rove, O'Reilly, Rudy, Mitt, Limbaugh, Hannity, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Tom Delay, Tony Snow, George Will, Matt Drudge, Mitch McConnell, Dennis Miller, Roger Ailes, Bill Bennett, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ted Nugent, Joe Scarborough, and of course, Any Coulter.

When I hear college Republicans or “conservatives” rail on the threats that gays have to their “family values”, I am reminded of Shakespeare’s prose about protesting too much.

While the Reverend Ted Haggard, Major Jim West of Spokane, James Guckert, Armstrong Williams, Mark Foley, and David Drier are more well known gay Republicans -- here are a few lesser known examples of fine upstanding moral Republicans that have repressed desires that they publicly condemn.

Congressman Bob Allen of Florida:

Young College National Republican ex-chairman Glenn Murphy from Indiana:

Others:

In psychology, this behavior is referred to as transference.

As a Xavier student and an executive board member of University Democrats, I'm obviously very concerned about Ann Coulter's impending visit to our school. In my opinion, her hateful remarks and malignant speech have no place in an institution of higher learning.

However, since our delightful College Republicans have brought Ann Coulter to speak at Xavier this fall, I would urge everyone to resist being apathetic about her visit. If everyone could make a donation, it will serve the groups that really represent the Catholic values that Xavier is expected to promote; values such as acceptance, social justice, and compassion, rather than the hatred that Coulter and her followers promote.

Thank you.

Hey Xavier Democrate. I love how you throw out the generic "hate speech." We all see that your idea being a liberal of hate speech is when you don't like what you hear. If you don't agree with someones ideas or don't like that they talk bad about a liberal you call it hate speech. You want to talk about speech that is more close to hate speech think about the words of people like Michael Moore or Bill Maher. But when they speak you talk about their right to free speech. They say awful personnel things others but get away with it. I think they have the right to say what they want as does Ann Coulter. But you describing her talk as "hate talk" is hypocritical. Just because you don't like it does not make it hate speech.

I think you are sad to be so "concerned" about her giving a speech. It is a speech to exchange ideas. Even if you don't agree with the ideas you should not whine about them being shared. This is the american political process. Listen to everyone and make up your mind what you want to follow.

Give me a break your little childish "concerned" about someone giving a talk when you don't agree with their ideas is lame. Get over yourself and let Free Speech happen. Not just Free Speech you like.

This is becoming quite the habit for upstanding anti-gay Republicans, add yet another one to the list, almost a weekly occurrence these days.
This is just another one that is part of the public record, imagine how many are yet undisclosed for those closeted?

Announcing this week's "family values" Republican who secretly desires gay sex, drum roll please ...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20467347/

It is becoming almost pathological, but no more absurd than considering Republicans fiscally conservative when a Republican President has never run a
positive deficit and more than 60% of the National Debt on the backs of Americans were created by Reagan and Dubya. Imagine Ann Coulter calling
John Edwards a 'faggot', a man who has fathered children and has a long standing marriage -- compare that to Coulter herself, what successful long standing
relationships does she have? How about the multiple marriages of "conservatives" Gulliani, McCain, or Gingrich?

Only in Republican world can such obvious inconsistencies be reconciled, but delusion is another defining attribute of Republicans.

It is almost funny if it were no so sad and thousands of people are dead as a result of such delusions at the National level, and for those fine
Republican enablers that we in bible belt Southern Ohio are surrounded by -- you know, the ones that gave Bush the 2004 election.

Reality check time!

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune. It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university. Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Wow that was a long post that had nothing to do with the topic. It really is a piece of trash propagnada also. If you really believe that republicans do not support any of what you listed you are way too gone. In fact you are lying through out your post. Nice that you cut and pasted something. Your all liberals are good and everything they do is good and all republicans are bad and everything they do is bad is really a very childish way to think and a childish arguement. Nice little story that is nothing but a bunch of mis-information and lies.

Oh yea remember to post on the topic, but you are probably so close minded you did not even think of that. Also glad to see you wasted your lame little story that I know you copied from somewhere at the end of this post. Good thinking!!
