Others' Thoughts on Qualls

Pretty much everybody interested in Cincinnati politics was talking today about Roxanne Qualls' appointment and entrance into the race to be one of nine in November. Here's what a few had to say:

Charlie Winburn, Republican former councilman running again: No question Qualls will win. "She is strong. I think she did a pretty good job as mayor."

Councilman Chris Monzel, also a Republican: "I welcome her to City Hall."

Charter Committee President Michael Goldman: "Roxanne Qualls is a long time Charter supporter and that she will be assuming a seat on council held for 25 years by Bobbie Sterne and for 9 years by Jim Tarbell."

Councilwoman Leslie Ghiz, who’s pleased to have a third woman on council: "I’m looking forward to learning from her. It’ll be fun to see the experience she brings. She called me today and left me just the nicest message."

Pete Witte, president of the Price Hill Civic Club and organizer of the West Side POWR PAC, was hoping Charter would give the seat to Melanie Bates. His group endorsed incumbents Ghiz, Jeff Berding, Chris Bortz, Chris Monzel, Cecil Thomas, John Cranley and challengers John Eby and Bates.

"Roxanne wasn’t all that well connected to the West Side when she was on council and when she was running for Congress,’’ he said. "That’s why she never did that well on this side of town."

Told that Qualls did mention the West Side and the importance of it several times in her announcement speech today, he joked that he'd believe her - as soon as she eats a Landmark at Price Hill Chili.

Just want this city needs is another recycled politician. Why couldn't the Charterites appoint someone new, with possibly some new ideas. I guess Roxie needed the job.

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE, for a real, DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Qualls laid the groundwork for the City West project to uproot Laurel Homes and Lincoln Court residents and push them out to the West Side.

Nice work, Ms. Qualls. Your handiwork can be viewed up and down Harrison, Glenway, 8th, State, and a whole host of side streets.

Whoa! Qualls is going to "eat a landmark"? That's amazing!

I am reading about her masters from Harvard.

Where did Qualls get an undergraduate degree?

Anyone?

Let's go dig up Boss Cox...why not if we are bringing political relics back to City Council

John Eby also welcomes Ms. Qualls to the race and office. We look forward to seeing her on the campaign trail

Actually, the last time she ran for council Roxanne came in second in Westwood, second in West Price Hill, and first in East Price Hill. Not bad for someone so out of touch.

The Westside obviously didn't know she was a major supporter of the redevelopment of the West End. Thrusting thousands of low income residents into the Westside and all the problems associated with them. Some friend she was. I hope they remember that this time.

Qualls actually never finished her undergraduate degree, but she did go to UC's DAAP and attended Thomas More College. Harvard, that institution with such lax admittance policies, does not require their graduate students to have undergraduate degrees. Ask her about it sometime. It's a hoot to hear her tell it.

I love how Reporterette Prendergast declares Qualls' election a fete d'complait.

Nice job reporting the news, not creating it Jane.

Girl Power!

I'm interested in 2 major issues at this point:

1) Rox's in preventing the CityLink Homeless/Criminal/Released Felon Mega Mall from construction in the West End.

2) Rox's interest in stopping Dohoney from tinkering with the old City Retirees' medical benefits.

If she can get these 2 issues done, she'll get my vote.

Every over the hill politico goes to that "masters program" at Harvard, if they have nothing else to do.

Admissions are EASY, and many Harvard Grads want the school abolished because it has no admission standards.

Yep,it's always easier being a politician than actually getting a real job.

You had to know she'd be back. Beats workin'

It is ridiculous to blame Roxanne Qualls for the long deferred racial integration of Price Hill and Westwood. If you want to blame someone, blame the generation that looked at the housing stock in those neighborhoods and decided to buy outside the city.

It's not the integration of the westside that she should be blamed for, it IS the decimation.

I go to NKU and was wondering is it has occured to anyone that Qualls was out of a job?

That has been the word on campus.

at 3:06 PM, August 10, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

It is my understanding that Roxanne resigned her position at NKU upon accepting the nomination for the open City council slot. Please clarify.

I find it quite amusing that all the "bloggers" who criticize Roxanne for returning to council sign off as "anonymous!" Either have the guts to use your real name...or better yet...back up your criticism with data!! Roxanne completed her undergraduate and grauduate work at Harvard. Granted, she didn't have a degree while serving here as Mayor but she wouldn't have been continuously (popularly) elected if she didn't know her stuff. It's easy to blog and "hate" when you don't have to leave your name isn't it?

at 11:17 AM, August 11, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Welcome to the blogosphere Mr. Freie. You are obviously unaware that the anonimity makes it so fun to say ridiculous stuff and no one knows who it is. You sir are crazy for posting your name, now all of us fruitcakes know who and where you live.

Many of these bloggers must not know Roxanne Qualls. Before you log in and wax on about things you don't know, meet her. Listen to her deep and broad knowledge of the tri-state region and the forces that impact it. I've worked with her for over two years at Northern Kentucky University and can say with certainty that the City of Cincinnati is fortunate that she has agreed to lead and serve. And, no, she hasn't been fired and didn't accept the council appointment because she was looking for a job. In fact, NKU hopes to keep its formal association with Roxanne because she has been so well-received and has positively impacted many students, colleagues, and community members in the region. Additionally, she has been offered countless opportunities but because she loves Cincinnati, she's back and serving you. So, my request is this: instead of sounding like uninformed ingrates who apparently don't know the first thing about Roxanne Qualls, give her a chance and a much closer look. Actually attend a campaign event, follow her issue stances and votes, and think instead of being an ignorant judge and critic. And, lastly, before you bash me, know that I'm a politically moderate, married, working professional with a Ph.D. from a well-regarded, accredited university.

Thank you for your "warning" blogger at 11:17 AM Was that a threat? If anything were to happen to me or my property I'm sure my friends at the
Green Township police dept. could assist me in locating the responsible party. For the record, you called yourself a "fruitcake"..I didn't. Have a pleasant Saturday afternoon.

People sem to forget what a clown show city council was when Qualls was here last time. Let's move on without her. City Council at 60 grand a year is the best part-time gig around. Let's not make her out to be someone who just wants to serve Cincinnati.

This is what my Master's degree from an expensive, well-regarded and fully accredited university is telling me.

Thank you for your comment #3:28 pm...I would address you as Sir or Madam but just like the rest you sign off as anoynomous....yes wouldn't it be nice to sit in city hall and make 60K and help decide city policy? As soon as you do all the grunt work establishing support thruout this whole damn city and pound the pavement knocking on doors and delivering your message...as soon as you do that and as soon as you work as hard as Roxanne did and does to get where she is....and as soon as you have a halfway decent message to deliver to me...a voter...only then will I listen to you. Thank you for playing...though...did you know you can access video games on google?

Remember: Qualls brought us City Clowncil.

All her making...along with the death of some neighborhoods!

Qualls knew her job was over at the end of the semester.

Everyone did.

I love all the Qualls defenders.

They never talk about her record!

Because it is all bad.

That is why Chabot beat her so badly.

at 9:03 PM, August 11, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ah...Blogger 7:28PM.....Qualls record is so bad? You failed to do two simple things:

1. leave your name...scared much?

2. back up your attacks against Roxanne without data
2 of my biggest pet peeves.

If you can't back up your attacks with data or leave your name..maybe you should go buy some krispy Kreme donuts and go catch the late nite showing of the Simpsons movie.

Roxanne Qualls is the most popular, most respected political figure over the last few decades in public opinion polls (look into it--there's actual data to back up this claim). You may not believe it, but I imagine you're a person who either doesn't vote or think. Chabot isn't exactly perfect either--so if he's your benchmark, best of luck to you. Has he delivered the best of everything to our region?

As for the "Clowncil" thing, find a way to argue substantively. Lose the ad hominem attacks and then what fo yuo have? As it appears, not much. Read, think for yourself, and then log in to comment.

5:41 post about the position ending at the end of the semester--you're uninformed. Period. I'm an insider. You're not.

7:28 blogger:
53-47 is a bad beating? Let's see you run. Could you even get 5%?

at 8:34 AM, August 12, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here's what my Bachelor's and Master's degrees tell me: Roxanne wants 14 years of more or less guaranteed employment to retire upon.

"The time is right" for her since a) she'll get to campaign as an incumbent. Does anyone honestly think Roxanne "pounds the pavement" going door to door? Hell no! Her proxies will do the hard work; b) in exchange for supporting Mallory 2 years ago she agreed not to challenge him. So in 6 years she'll run for Mayor and (in her and her supporters' minds, presumably win) and be re-elected.

She'll be in her mid-60s by the time she's banked close to $1.4 million in Council/Mayor salaries on the backs of the taxpayers, and we'll all long for the halcyon day s of Charlie Luken's fiscal responsibility by comparison.

Green Township John: are you going to move into the City to support Qualls? If not then please shut the hell up! Just as no one in Cincinnati gives a rat's rip what y'all do in Green Township, please don't interfere in our civic affairs. I've had a bellyful of people who don't commit to Cincinnati by living here opining on our ills and opportunities, including our governance, and your arrogance bores me.

Sorry, "Green Township Joe" (if that's your real name, not that it matters)

at 11:38 AM, August 12, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bravo, 8:34, you nailed Roxanne down to a tee, as well as the people who live outside the city limits who think they have a say in Cincinnati. Until you suburban folk get off your cans and come to Cincinnati to shop, eat, and play you just have to shut up, continue to eat at chain restaurants, and shop at the mall.

Enjoy your vanilla life, but stay the hell out of mine.

Bill Stone, OTR

Oh, Cincinnati Joh, you and Rox are buffoons.

Mr. Freie, it's always refreshing when non city residents weigh in on City of Cincinnati matters. Have you looked in your own backyard? Get the wonderful Roxy to take over for Chuck Mitchell. You seem to be a progressive, liberal type, but yet you live in the white toast world of Green Township? Dare you to move to the West End. Price Hill or Westwood for that matter.

10:18 ..Look at the percentage of votes Luken and Portune got in 1999.

Compare it to Qualls in 1997.

They both did better.

And the highest percentage EVER:

Springer, early 70's.

blogger 1:23 pm That was funny! you made me laugh out loud. Thank you for calling me a progressive liberal type.....but I do not eat at chain restaurants nor have I been to a mall in years. For entertainment I LOVE DOWNTOWN and NORTHSIDE and CLIFTON....mainly Northside at the moment for its eclectic personality and its diversiveness.

When are you gonna come out of the closet Foxie Roxie? You've used Gay money from folks who thought they were gonna get Gay Power....but it seems you're only interested in cigar smoked filled back rooms with sleazy deals...and perhaps freezers filled with cash? Unlike you and Mr. Cincinnati not all of us smoked our brains out in the seventies
