More from Bates on Qualls

Charter Council candidate Melanie Bates had a prior commitment and had to miss this afternoon's announcement that her party gave Jim Tarbell's council seat to former Mayor Roxanne Qualls.

Joan Kaup was there, sitting at the table with Tarbell, Qualls, Chris Bortz, Charter President Michael Goldman and former long-time Charter councilwoman Bobbie Sterne. Tarbell called Kaup the "epitome of volunteer, civic, servant interests" and said "one of the charming parts about her" is her newness. "She came to the table so fresh and untainted."

Here's more of Bates' conversation with Enquirer education reporter Ben Fischer:

“You know, it’s kind of like when you apply for a job and you don’t get it. It’s the same kind of feeling.”

She said she didn't have any advance warning, no time to ask that she be considered for the appointment: “I don’t think anyone did, I don’t think even Roxanne did. It was all of a sudden, there were rumors swirling. “How can you predict Jim Tarbell? That’s like predicting the weather in the Midwest. You just can’t.”

He asked her if she felt it was fair for Charter to appoint someone who wasn't already running:

“The Democrats did that with Eric Kearney for Mallory’s Senate seat. It doesn’t make it OK, but it’s politics. I’m not saying it’s OK, or feels good, or anything, it’s just the way it is. If you’re in the game, you have to roll with the punches.”

And what might this do to her chances in November?

“I don’t know. But then, having her in the race could, it may — I’m not ready to say it’s the worst thing that ever happened, or it’s the best thing that ever happened. Certainly, all else being even, it’s not good for me … But she would draw a base that would support me. So that might enable me, to bump someone else.”

“Her being there, it may be just fine for me. How it happened is a different story.”

“It’s obvious I’m not going to be sitting (on Council) in September, but in reality does it make a difference? If it was a conservative male they brought forward, I’d say that’s pretty crappy. But Roxanne can energize a base that could help me. So it may be a wash for me. I just don’t know.”

She said she believes there's room for both her and Qualls on council because there are "weak incumbents." She wouldn't elaborate on which incumbents she was referring to - after she noticed Pamula Thomas, CPS ombudsman and wife of incumbent Cecil Thomas, standing nearby.

So sad to see Melanie cop out. That is why she will lose...no guts.

awww poor poor Melanie can't get appointed because "my husband was murdered" is not a platform.
If she had been appointed a whole whole lot of people would have been disgusted. Qualls is a great choice. You don't put someone like Bates or Kaup in just because they need a boost to get elected.

Its good to see that Chris Bortz isn't letting his courtship of the Republican party get in the way of him appointing an ultra-liberal to council. Because if there is anything that you should do when begging the Republicans for their endorsement, it is to appoint someone the Republicans oppose and someone who kills the chances of at 2 or 3 Republican candidates.

"...It’s obvious I’m not going to be sitting (on Council) in September..."

We think she should not be so quick to rule herself out !

While we would have preferred her to run as a Democrat, she let arrogance and pride prevail ?

Sometimes the past should remain in the past !

Certainly bates would be better than a mon-zealot or the turncoat cole-laborating bird-lings.

Qualls is greedy! She wins anyway...does she need the seat, too?

Just like her to forget the team.

What is it with all the queer bashers ?

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE, for a real, DEMOCRAT 2007 !

"She came to the table so fresh and untainted."

Is Tarbell implying that Qualls is stale and corrupted?

Anon 9:34, the local "Republican" "organization" is in such poor shape that Bortz could urinate on their pictures of Bush and Rove and still get their endorsement if he has the cash to help them pay their bills.

Not that the trust-fund babies who work there need the money. But the landlord and Duke Energy wanted to be paid. Badly.

There is a clear difference in the Dems nominating Keaney and the Charterites nominating Qualls. The seat Kearney was appointed to was vacated when Mallory became Mayor. In this case, Tarbell is vacating soley for the purpose of appoint a candidate who can run as an incumbant. Kaup is comparing apples to oranges further proving she is too "fresh" (read unqualified).

Also, the Enquirer reporter's blatent jab at Cecil Thomas was completely out of order...report the news dont create it. Despite his vulnerability the story has nothing to do with him.

"if it was a conservative male they brought forward, I’d say that’s pretty crappy."

Well...so much for representing everybody in the city equally. Hey Melanie why not put a sign on your door "Males of any kind NOT welcome in camp."

Thanks for showing your true stripes.

Yeah Bates is a woman with no class whatsoever.

Did anyone ever say that politics was fair? I've been expecting Roxanne's return although she wasn't that strong of an advocate for Gays. I think Melanie Bates would do a lot for crime prevention and now her chances are tougher. Roxanne could have been a little more up front about her intentions and a little less cagey....but then this is politics...Cincinati politics no les!

Melanie bates is highly qualified for City Council and should continue to run her race. There are several members of this council who should worry about their very lucrative part-time jobs. While Qualls will win back the seat, Bates has a very good chance of taking one away from a council that has been less than impressive with responding to the communities needs.

As a long time supporter of Roxanne Qualls and her progressive views I'm pleased she's making a return and Tarbell is correct in assuming Qualls can keep this Charter seat...an important party that was created for Reform in this city. I also hold Melanie Bates in very high regard and Bates is absolutely correct that there is room for both her and Roxanne. Let's remember that in November shall we? I won't name names but I think Qualls and Bates will be good replacements for a couple of the incumbants.

One more comment. For those of you who made less than respectful comments about Roxanne Qualls and or Melanie Bates...it's easy to do so when you can sign off as "anonymous" isn't it? Ah..the joys of blogging! Perhaps you'd have fun on PerezHilton.com where you can make up a name? I miss the good old days when the Enquirer called to verify things! For the record, let's not forget the credentials of Joan Kaup when voting (check out her website}. The Charter party has an impressive slate...including incumbant Chris Bortz

I'll say it, Qualls is a turncoat, fake, chamelion who needs to be completely honest with the the citizens of this town. I doubt she can.

And, just for you, John, I'll sign my name.

Hey Bates, sorry to hear that you caught the dreaded foot in mouth desease going around liberal cincy these days.I think a dose of ANN COULTURE would do the trick!

Hey blogger 11:31 am. You told Bates to get a dose of Ann coulture? Did you mean Ann Coulter? Such a lovely woman. She recently asked an audience if they saw John and Elizabeth Edward's bumper sticker that say, "Have I told you about our dead son yet?"....taking a jab at the Edwards because their 19 year old son was killed in a car accident on their way to visit his parents on vacation. Ann Coulter (see I CAN SPELL) also said she can't comment on John Edwards presidential ambitions because you "have to go to rehab if you use the word FAGGOT!" Soooooooooo blogger 11:31am ...while you use such "esteemed" folks as Ann Coulter as an example for us Cincy folks I continue to be grateful that we have the City Council that we do...with the addition of Roxanne and soon to be added Melanie Bates...rather than the misguided angry rants of an Ann COULTER follower like yourself. cheer up, join a gym, find a sport or maybe a dating service and everything will all be okay. Good luck to you!

Mr. Freie: again with the "I support Roxanne et.al." foolishness from the wilds of Green Township.

Go away now, please. OR, put your money your mouth is and move into the city.

Better yet: put your "progressive" views to work and replace Bill Seitz.

Mr. Anonymous blogged little ole me a 8:44 am on a Sunday morning? Tsk tsk...whassa matter..slow Sat. nite? Non date nite...or is this the way it always goes for you? Just because I say green township doesn't mean I don't have an apt. in the city!! Green is the family residence...altough I do agree that Bill Seitz should be replaced..and I wish you good luck in finding that special someone and thank you again for thinking of me so early on a sun. morning.

John from Green T, I hope you are actually working for the Qualls campagn, because if you are, she's dead in the water. Get all your elitist little friends and try to bring out the vote. Please!!! Furthermore, what is your doctorate in, and where is it from, some online joint with no standards?

Green Township John: No, I own a home in the city and haven't had to date for over 15 years. Unlike Roxanne I don't need a taxpayer-funded payday to perform my civic duty and be a responsible citizen in the City of Cincinnati.

"The Family Residence"? Why do you sound now like Alicia Reece? Living outside the City but voting from within it. Do you know what the penalty is for election fraud?

at 1:18 PM, August 13, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rest assured I most certainly not nor ever would commit election fraud. As far as comparing me to Alicia Reece...thank you! She's a sharp young woman and we'll be seeing her back very soon I'm sure
