Let them wear orange - UPDATED

If you read this story in today's Cincinnati Enquirer, you might wonder - What's up with White House budget director Rob Portman and all those orange ties?

Well, you would not be the first to ask.

Yesterday, Portman explained: "I've always liked a brighter tie." But red was too common, so despite being a HUGE Cincinnati Reds fan, Portman turned to orange. It's more unique, he said.

However, if you were in the room yesterday where his portrait was unveiled, it would not have seemed so "unique."

"You will note that there are a disproportionate number of ... there is a spontaneous gathering of orange ties," U.S. trade ambassador Susan C. Schwab said, as she got ready to unveil the picture.

Indeed, nearly a dozen men in suits were sporting all sorts of orange ties, including U.S. trade deputy Karan K. Bhatia.

"I had to hunt this thing out," he said later, chuckling. "I never wear it."

Another portrait admirer, when asked about his tie, admitted that he did get a strange look from his wife that morning when he put it on.

"I don't know if I'll have any more reasons to wear it after today," he joked.
UPDATE: By an official tally (courtesy of Portman's daughter, Sally) the Terrace Park native has a total of EIGHT orange ties in his closet. Possibly 10, but some are more yellow and others are darker than "regular orange," you get the picture.

Yet more hard-hitting journalism from the Enquirer's ace Washington reporter.

Hey, when can we expect more stories on what Steve Chabot likes to eat, or how fast Jean Schmidt ran some marathon?

Keep up the good work, Malia.

Fascinating information!!! Superb journalism!!!

We have a President who has lied this country into two illegal wars. A President, Vice President, Attorney General and many other White House staffers who should have been fired/impeached long ago. Yet you choose to write about an 'orange tie'? Thank you for continuing the 'dumbing down of the American people". Well done!

Why not cover:

FACT: FBI says, "No hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11".
Source: www.teamliberty.net/id267.htm

FACT: Multiple investigations have proven Iraq had NO WMD's.

FACT: Multiple investigations have proven Iraq had no ties to al Qaeda.

FACT: Multiple investigations have proven Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

FACT: Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Bush and Cheney have allowed the US to conduct torture (ignoring the Geneva Conventions).

FACT: Unlike the claims made by the Bush administration, domestic spying on americans on US soil started even before 9/11.

FACT: The Downing Street memo points to the Bush administration 'fixing the intelligence to match the policy' regarding their run-up to the Iraq War.

FACT: In the book Bin Laden, la verite interdite (Bin Laden, the forbidden truth), that was released recently, the authors, Jean-Charles Brisard and Guillaume Dasquie, reveal that the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) deputy director John O'Neill resigned in July in protest over the obstruction.
The authors claim that O'Neill told them that "the main obstacles to investigate Islamic terrorism were US oil corporate interests and the role played by Saudi Arabia in it". The two claim that the US government's main objective in Afghanistan was to consolidate the position of the Taliban regime to obtain access to the oil and gas reserves in Central Asia.

They affirm that until August, the US government saw the Taliban regime "as a source of stability in Central Asia that would enable the construction of an oil pipeline across Central Asia" from the rich oilfields in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, through Afghanistan and Pakistan, to the Indian Ocean. Until now, says the book, "the oil and gas reserves of Central Asia have been controlled by Russia. The Bush government wanted to change all that."

But, confronted with Taliban's refusal to accept US conditions, "this rationale of energy security changed into a military one", the authors claim.

"At one moment during the negotiations, the US representatives told the Taliban, 'either you accept our offer of a carpet of gold, or we bury you under a carpet of bombs,'" Brisard said in an interview in Paris.

FACT: At the 9/11 Commission Hearings Condi Rice stated that the reason why President Bush ignored the August 6, 2001 PDB was because all of the information in the PDB were "historic in nature". Yet here are quotes from the PDB. Do these sound "historic in nature"?

"Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.
The FBI is conducting approximately 70 full-field investigations throughout the U.S. that it considers bin Laden-related. CIA and the FBI are investigating a call to our embassy in the UAE in May saying that a group or bin Laden supporters was in the U.S. planning attacks with explosives." – 8/6/2001 PDB

FACT: Bin Laden Treated at US hospital in 2001
Two months before 9/11, from July 4-14, Osama bin Laden was treated for renal failure at the American Hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A Dr. Callaway treated him and has refused to answer any questions about the incident, not even a denial. During his stay bin Laden was visited by two CIA officers one of whom, Larry Mitchell, returned to CIA headquarters to make a report. The US government had a 5 million dollar bounty on bin Laden’s head at this time. This story was widely covered in Europe but UPI was the only outlet to cover it in the US. [Guardian 11/1/01, London Times 11/1/01, Le Figaro 10/31/01, UPI 11/1/01]

FACT: Hijackers Trained at US bases
As unbelievable as it may seem, at least six of the nineteen hijackers are verified to have trained at US military bases. [New York Times 9/15/01, Newsweek 9/15/01]

1. Three trained and resided at Pensacola Naval Air Station, even listing it as their address on their driver’s licenses. [Pensacola News Journal, 9/17/01] Another, Hamza Alghamdi, also trained there. [Washington Post, 9/16/01]

2. Saeed Alghamdi attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. [Los Angeles Times 9/15/01, Gannet, 9/17/01]

3. Mohammed Atta, the lead hijacker, trained at the International Officers School at Maxwell Air Base, AL [Los Angeles Times, 9/15/01], where he is remembered by witnesses as having been introduced at an officer’s club party. [Daniel Hopsicker, Welcome to Terrorland]
The government says these are not the same people as the hijackers, despite witness reports to the contrary. [Washington Post, 9/16/01] Why is the government lying?

FACT: Hijacker’s Landlord was FBI Informant
Far from being “under the radar,” for six months in 2000 two of the hijackers, Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar, lived with Addussattar Shaikh in San Diego. [San Diego Union-Tribune, 9/16/01] Shaikh was an undercover informant, described as a “tested asset” by the FBI. [Newsweek, 9/9/01] Neighbors claim that lead hijacker Mohammed Atta was a frequent visitor, along with another hijacker. The FBI has not allowed the informant to testify. [Chicago Tribune, 9/30/01, AP 9/29/01] The FBI claims they had no idea of what was going to happen and that the hijackers betrayed no inkling of their intentions. It appears that it is more likely that the hijackers were being trained, housed and guided in their mission by the US government.

FACT: Air Force Colonel says Bush Knew
Air Force Lt. Colonel Steven Butler was suspended from his post at the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA in June of 2002 for a letter he had written to a local newspaper, which violated military law prohibiting public criticism of superiors, in which he stated that President Bush allowed the attacks to happen. Col. Butler was Vice Chancellor at the time that hijacker Saeed Alghamdi was training there and was in a unique position to know if a covert operation utilizing this hijacker was underway. [BBC 6/5/02, Monterey County Herald, 6/5/02]

These reasons (and many more) are why we question the Bush administration and their dedication to the truth and to defending and supporting the U.S. Constitution.

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." – George Orwell

have you ever noticed that bronson is too much of a chicken to take the lead on a blog?

Yeah, I've noticed that about Bronson too. It was great while the Enquirer allowed comments on his columns. Bronson's logic didn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny. The topper was when one commenter pointed out a Snopes item that exposed the fact that Bronson's column was based entirely on an urban legend. It was hilarious. The Enquirer put an end to that pretty quickly.
