Schmidt applauds new database

From now on, it'll be a lot easier for Rep. Jean Schmdit to do opposition research on her two-time GOP opponent, former Rep. Bob McEwen.

Starting last week, all registrations and reports from lobbyists who work for foreign clients will be available online through the Justice Department Web site.

McEwen, who became a lobbyist after leaving congressional service, has filed several reports as a foreign lobbyist, detailing, for example, work he did in 2004 for the country of Eritrea.

Schmidt had been pushing for these reports to be made available online since she was elected. She introduced a bill to force the government to post them online last year and was quick to applaud last week's announcement:

"I am delighted that there is finally sunshine on the Foreign Agent Filings at the Department of Justice," she said in a news release. "While the process took way too long, finally the public can view these filings. Today the American public won a small victory."

Before the database went online, the only way to view these reports was by looking them up on an old computer in a small room at a DOJ branch office.

I'm proud of the Congresswoman. I'm just glad she wasn't wasting time trying to get a jab at her past opponent (sarcasm).

if Schmidt truly wanted to get back at a former opponent, she could increase penalties for check-bouncing and voter fraud. And she could criminalize having a total a** munch for a spokesman.

Phooey. Schmidt ONLY cared about that database precisely BECAUSE she thought it would help her smear McEwen.

She's an idiot. Thank God she won't last much longer when Brinkman takes her out.

A useful bit of legislation. This kind of info should be available to the public. Now, thanks to the good Congresswoman, it is. Nice work, Jean!

Take a look at the address McEwen uses for his filings with the Justice Dept. It sure isn't his little condo in Hamilton County that he claims is his residence. Its his million dollar home in Virginia. If you check the latest FEC filings you will also see that McEwen is in trouble again. This one will cost him money.

ha, these comments bashing Jean prove that no matter what she does, some people cant get over the fact that their candidate got beat by a WOMAN. this legislation was long overdue, and clearly needed, but yet those who dont like her cant even admit that!

PATHETIC!

Fred Thompson was a lobbyist for about 15 years. Don't know if foreign governments were involved. Do you think we'll see any of his reports?

What are you talking about, Malia? Does Schmidt think she's going to run against McEwen again? I don't think so. She'll have enough opposition locally. I would think she and her staff could spend their time more productively than looking up former candidates.
