Schmidt passes two bills

Rep. Jean Schmidt had a big victory today. Well, sort of.

The Miami Township congresswoman announced that two of her bills - H.R. 2077 and H.R. 2078 - passed the House. The bills weren't that controversial. Both passed on a voice vote. So what were the bills?

Actually, they were to name two post offices in Ohio after two Adams County natives.

"I am proud to honor these men. Sergeant Hawkins is an American Hero who gave his life in service to his country in Iraq. George Lewis dedicated his life to his community and public service," Schmidt said. "I am pleased to have the support of the entire Ohio delegation."

H.R. 2077 would designate the U.S. Post Office at 20805 State Route 125 in Blue Creek as the "George B. Lewis Post Office Building."

H.R. 2078 would designate the U.S. Post Office at 14536 State Route 136 in Cherry Fork as the "Staff Sergeant Omer T. 'O.T.' Hawkins Post Office."

Wowie zowie! $165,200 a year for two whole post office names! Boy, oh boy. It's a good thing Mean Jean, and Captain Combover Chabot are working so hard to benefit Southwest Ohio. Maybe Steve can get a courthouse or the Federal Building in Cincinnati renamed after Reagan. Because, you know, there's not enough named after him, and that's certainly more important than education, health care, or making sure our troops have the funding they need. Remember, Steve and Jean voted not to support the troops with funding, and Bush vetoed the funding the Democrats wanted to provide. This is the "leadership" we get in southwest Ohio.

This is a routine matter to honor two constituents, one posthumously.
Thanks, Congresswoman, for your attention to this small but locally important matter.

Anon 11:39,

Unless you are just a naked partisan jerk, there is no need to bring congressman Chabot into a discussion of Jean Schmidt. She is not fit to shine his shoes.

How much does it cost to change the name of the post offices?

Why not bring Chabot in? He hasn't done anything for his district in almost 13 years in Congress. He's just as worthless as Schmidt.

Thank goodness we have Jean Schmidt there for us to tackle such important issues as the renaming of 2 Post Offices. Last week she promised to get to the bottom of how many food stamp recipients are buying Twinkies, and now she's managed to change the name of a couple Post Offices. We are so lucky to have such an effective Congressman who's unafraid to tackle the tough issues.

YES!

Great job, Jean!

Legislative leadership is obvious in your activism in Congress. Not just anyone could get post office names changed, AND getting the entire Ohio delegation to get behind you.

People, this stuff takes a LOT of diligence. I'm sure Jean had her staff burning the midnight oil (or ethanol) to make the key calls to get the votes for these bills.

I'm so glad that Jean is focused on the post office names during the week that gas prices hit an all-time high.
