Guess What City Council Debated Tonight

Update: There were several comments on the original blog that purported to be from Scott Gehring.

They weren't, according to Gehring. They have been deleted.

Arts funding. I know, you're shocked.

For 45 minutes, members talked about Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell and his arts committee's recommendations for grant recipients from the city's capital arts fund. The proposal before council called for giving $6,000 to the American Institute of Architects Cincinnati, $25,000 to the American Sign Museum, $10,000 to Ballet Tech Cincinnati, $50,000 to the Clifton Arts Center, $2,500 to CinStages Web Site, $5,000 to Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, $25,000 to the Madisonville Community Arts Center, $1,500 to the Queen City Concert Band and $6,000 to the New Stage Collective.

This is a different pot of money than the other arts capital funding debate over whether to spend $3.8 million for four major cultural buildings in the city (Cincinnati History Museum, Music Hall, Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Cincinnati Art Museum) plus create a $600,000 fund for smaller arts groups that would also pay for festivals and parades like the Taste of Cincinnati.

The former plan was on for passage by council tonight, which made a perfect chance for those who oppose Tarbell's $3.8 million plan (that would be Councilmen Chris Bortz and Jeff Berding and Councilwoman Laketa Cole and Leslie Ghiz) to grill him about this pot of money, too. Basically, Tarbell, as chairman of council's arts committee, chooses the winners. The four didn't approve.

Some pretty harsh words flowed.

Ghiz and Cole both said they're disgusted. Ghiz tried to get the measure referred back to the arts committee for more discussion, but she and her three colleagues were out-voted.

Still, the debate continued.

John Cranley chimed in with: "Let's cut to the chase. We have several members of council who are angry at Mr. Tarbell." To suggest the process for applying for arts grants was flawed or wrong "is absurd. Nothing is being done secretly."

Ghiz said Cranley's "halo is blinding me over here" and "that you're able to spin anything to make yourself look fabulous."

Mayor Mark Mallory cut her off, stopping the proceedings for a few minutes - to let the high school students who were watching the process go home. He got a few laughs when he said they'd gotten a good look at the legislative process.

After council resumed, David Crowley said he'd never before heard any complaints about the arts grant process. He said it was "unpleasant and unfair attacking the integrity of the vice mayor."

Cole said it's her right to ask questions and she shouldn't be accused of attacking her colleagues for doing so.

In the end, all the agencies in tonight's package got their money. None of them got it unanimously, though. Chris Monzel separated out four - the sign museum, Ballet Tech, Clifton and Madisonville arts centers. Everyone but Ghiz voted for them. The money for the other five passed with six of the nine supporting. Ghiz, Berding and Monzel voted against them.

Then, Berding, Cranley and Mallory made plans to go out to dinner together.

Look at how those four brats are acting with the arts.

What will "they" pick-on next to no avail of anything (but wasted time)?

The City would be better off if Those Four stepped-back, took zero initiative and voted on what the other five proposed.

In other news Council also passed legislation that will add another 200 youth jobs, and legislation that puts Cincinnati on the national forefront of green building...

...but we Citizens are so glad that the press sees arts allocations as more important...

Once again the League of Chaos (Berding-Ghiz-Bortz) tried to blow up something that was going to provide residual benefits for the city.

Cole is the real flip flopper. I don't even recognize her since she joined forces with Berding. She's not only lost my support, but I bet she's lost a lot of other Democrats.

So Ghiz voted against neighborhood art centers in Clifton and Madisonville, which are so important to those communities but she is willing to give $1 million to the Freedom Center??? Oh yeah, I guess the people who run the art centers arent promising big donations to her campaign like Big Daddy Pepper.

Berding gives the city jackass politics. Cole, Bortz and Ghiz should be given the boot for joining his grandstanding.

As always, ghiz you come off as the true class act that you really are. Your insights and subtle bon mot have a way of making the day a little brighter for everyone around you. Wow - how do you do it? Find time to make witty remarks at the expense of your fellow Council members and ignore the issue at hand and still ignore campaign promises from over a year ago (like cutting your salary)? All this AND you still have time to manipulate the local young republicans as if they worked for you. Brava. Brava.

(hey - where is the sarcasm setting for this thing?)

Where does Scott Gehring stand on the issue?

I'm waiting for another exciting Blue Chip email.

Wonder if pink shirt Gehring will run for office again and get his butt kicked?

He's another Berding type. Too egotistical to ever get elected.

maybe he should join Berding's weight lose program.

Um, Jeff Berding got elected. And Scott will manage 2 successful campaigns this year, which is 2 more than the Monogrammed Mangler ever will.

WHAT A BUNCH OF FREAKING IDIOTS!.

Can anyone really say they are proud to have these people represent them?

JEEZ!

I love how these Leslie Ghiz staffers are here proclaiming that she showed great leadership by punking John Cranley. Yeah, criticizing that little man really requires a lot of leadership skill. I applaud Ghiz for finally finding a white Democrat she can criticize, but the reality is the rest of us have been exposing John Cranley's lousy performance in office for years.

at 8:43 AM, May 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Scott managing his political mentor Berding's campaign too?

at 5:20 PM, May 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

anon 8:43, no Scott is managing a campaign in the suburbs. his candidate is a reasonable moderate tying to restore fiscal sanity to a community that the radical right has run into the ground.

Scott Gehring's halo is blinding me over here. The attitude of the Ghiz staffers posting here accurately reflect Ghiz's performance in office - lots of attitude and no solutions.

Dear "Scott", if tolerance is your goal and "hate-filled" is what you're busy battling, I don't think referring to your boss' constituents as "hillbillies, bigots, prudes, and Fallwell Followers" is the way to accomplish your objectives. I also don't believe abusing a Republican club's email list to bash other Republicans reflects well on either you or your boss. Reflect indeed, however, is what it does on Ghiz and her methods.

If you really are Scott Gehring I find it incredible that you just bashed your own group's speaker for Monday night's meeting. Be sure to say that to his face (whether you're Scott or not). And if you really knew who I was, "fat" is about the last thing you'd think of me. I'm about as fat as Nate Livingston is white. You don't seem to know much.

I notice whenever there's a personality dispute at City Hall, Ghiz is always right in the middle of it while Monzel isn't. He's too busy doing his job. When he's in a battle it's against the likes of Uncle Milt's and child molestors, not other Members of Council (or "Counsel" to a Ghiz supporter).

I'm glad you are concerned about people who give the Republican Party a bad name. Unfortunately, Ghiz's performance in office and your posts in this thread alone are doing more than enough to smear our Party's name.

All this attention for a Council staffer from a blog entry he's not even mentioned in??? This guy's got talent!!!

If this is what Leslie has her aide doing than she has lost this vote.

I Heart Scott Gehring!

at 5:22 PM, May 20, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 5:20,

Stop being so coy. It's no secret that Ghiz and Gehring are going after certain Republicans who they deem "too conservative." It's also no secret that Vincent and the other GOP power brokers are so afraid of Ghiz going Dem or Charter that they are letting her wage this war from within. This is one reason why they are not supporting ANY suburban candidate this year, so Ghizzy and Gehring can target those they oppose.

Ghiz and Gehring particularly have it in for the following people:

Sam Malone, who passed over Leslie to appoint her to DeWine's seat; Chris Monzel, the beneficiary of the appointment;

Charlie Winburn; Gary Lindgren, Chabot's Chief of Staff; Dick Hammersmith, Monzel's previous Chief of Staff; and the whole Brinkman, Heimlich, Finney, COAST apparatus, all of whom lobbied Malone to apopint Monzel over Ghiz.

Ghiz and Gehring are going after anyone who can be connected to them.

This means Monzel, Malone, and Winburn, who are currently running for City Council.

This means Russ Jackson in Anderson Township, who is a COAST ally.

And this means Heather Harlow, the Colerain Township Clerk whose husband has worked for both Chabot and Malone.

Gehring's uncle lives in Colerain and has already been elected to the school board.

It is becoming an open secret in Colerain that Gehring's uncle is taking on Heather Harlow this fall.

Since the real Scott Gehring says those posts aren't from him, I'd be happy to have my posts edited to remove any reference to him or the infamous Blue Chip email.
