Vice President Portman?

What do you think?

It's still more than a year from the 2008 presidential primary elections, after which the winning candidate typically chooses their vice presidential candidate.

But the buzz surrounding Terrace Park's Rob Portman, the White House budget director and a former area congressman, has already started.

Last Tuesday, Portman and his wife, Jane, were in Washington to attend the annual Bryce Harlow Foundation dinner, during which Portman was honored with the Bryce Harlow Award.

This award is given each year to a "distinguished public official who has contributed to the building of strong business-government relations." Previous honorees include Minority Leader John Boehner of West Chester (2005) and Vice President Dick Cheney (1992).

At the dinner, Portman was introduced by Louisiana Rep. Jim McCrery, the top Republican on the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, who couldn't help throwing out publicly what many on the Hill have been saying privately:

"He'd be a great next vice presidential candidate," McCrery said - to much applause.

Rob Portman is a heartbeat (or an indictment) away from the Vice-Presidency. If Cheney goes down for any reason whatsoever, Portman's the replacement. If it happens before the Iowa caucus, then Portman will probably end up running for President.

Luckily, Ohio will have fair transparent and verifiable elections thanks to Jennifer Brunner and that will help the nation to re-elect Al Gore as president.

Yeah, wasn't that one of Jennifer Brunner's campaign promises, to rig the 2008 elections?

Portman's association with Ohio, the most corrupt state, would only bring up all Ohio issues in a national election.

There's no way the Republicans are that desperate for a candidate.

A junior congressman and water-boy for the Bush administration? Are you kidding me? He would be a drain on what will undoubtedly be a pitifully weak Republican ticket. Ohio is a laughing stock. His successor just said that it's no big deal that soldiers wounded in battle during a war most reasonable people realize was a mistake sleeping in piss and rat shit is no big deal. Rob Portman, and any and all Ohio republicans are pathetic criminals and should be discouraged from running for anything above dog catcher.

He was in congress for 13 years - "Junior Congressman"? Learn what you're taking about before you waste your time posting on this blog.

Portman is disqualified because of his go-along-to-get-along approach of the last six years.

Being close to the Bushes, he is one of the few people who could have asked the tough questions--about Iraq, about the deficits, about anything, really--and maybe changed things. Instead, he abdicated his responsilibty, and helped usher in most of the changes Bush wanted through Congress.

He is as responsible for the disaster of the last six years as anyone on the Hill. Like Colin Powell, his career, so bright a number of years ago, will forever be tainted because he didn't have the courage to stand up.
