Doing more for the disabled

People in wheelchairs shouldn't have to worry about being hit by oncoming traffic while trying to exit a parking garage.

They also shouldn't have to worry about too-small parking spaces or bathroom stall coat hooks installed too high up, said Hamilton County commissioner Todd Portune He floated a proposal Wednesday that would require any new county-supported building project with a budget over $1 million be reviewed to determine whether it is “welcoming” to the disabled.

"I want to make sure ... what we construct is useful for all our citizens," he said.

Portune, who used to be wheelchair-bound and now uses a walker, said he had a bad experience recently in the Fountain Square parking garage. Though technically compliant with the American with Disabilities Act standards, the handicapped parking spaces were too small, the ramps are poorly placed and the layout forces wheelchairs to turn blind curves into oncoming traffic, he said.

"It lacked in many respects," he said. Portune sent the owner, 3CDC a letter to that fact and "they are working to address the problem," he said.

If quality of life is measured in the small steps that add up to leaps in bounds of progress - we are making headway, here.

Tod swings his mighty wRong wingnut whacko propaganda sword !

What's the matter Tod, afraid his will be "U.S. Attorney" fired for wheeling across the party line ?

Keep goose-wheeling and "clicking those tires " !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Aren't buildings accessed by the public required by law to be ADA accessible? I do agree that the "new and improved" FS Garage is horrible. I parked there for an evening function a few weeks after it opened. Had to walk up 2 floors to pay and then back to the car to exit (payment was not at the exit as at almost every other garage I've ever parked in). What progress!!!

Great job, Todd !

Sometimes a mile in one's shoes can be eye opening !

We are blessed with your public service and birds-eye perspective.

First of all you can pay as you exit if you use a debit or credit card. Also if you ever get out of Cincinnati you will realize that most parking facilities are going to this technology, even one of the garages across from UC's campus utilizes this type of system.

I think the garage is greatly improved with enhanced lighting and markers.

If Todd feels that ADA compliance isn't good enough...maybe he should focus on changing the guidelines that are mandated by the federal government.

Typical wRong wingnut whacko that failed high school civics !

Hello: State Rights, Community Rights !

Federal Guidelines are the minimum requirements !

Any state, community can enact stricter guidelines if they so choose. Especially when the communities money is involved !

Todd is correct to change that for which he has the authority !

But hey, I think the community also offers night-school !

Just a suggestion !

PATHETIC !

anon/3CDC,

Your garage sucks and you and the Enquirer lied about how much money the city gave up for you to steal it.

The handicapped spots used to be along the north wall and there were more of them. You could've cut the curb on the otherside. After all, the city gave you our annual parking revenue for 40 years in exchange for $3.5 million.

That's going to be over $100 million and that's why you keep the estimated revenue projections as "private information".

See you opening day weekend!

Anonymous 9:38, not to give old bold face any more attention than he deserves, but the ADA actually requires reasonable accomodation. Doing things like making bigger parking spaces, adequate curb cuts, ramps, elevators, etc. are the MINIMAL form of reasonable accomodation for a public building.

While you could try to argue that the ADA is vague, I doubt that you even minimally understand the law if you think this particular garage is ADA-compliant.
