We want NIOSH, by gosh

Hamilton County's commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday asking the federal government to keep the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health -- and its well-paying jobs -- in Hamilton County.

And they want Jean Schmidt to butt out.

Commissioner Todd Portune noted that Schmidt, the Loveland Republican Congresswoman from Ohio's Second Congressional District, is doing all she can to have the federal government relocate a consolidation of area NIOSH offices to Clermont County.

NIOSH has had offices in Hamilton County for more than 35 years including the large building in Clifton.

Now, though, it plans to consolidate area offices into a $70 million headquarters. Four sites in Hamilton County -- all in the Cincinnati city limits -- and three in Clermont County are being considered.

The resolution encourages the government to relocate NIOSH and its 1,100 employees within Hamilton County.

Portune, a Democrat, asked Republican Commissioner Pat DeWine to place a call to the area's other Congressman, Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, (pictured) to try to offset what Portune said was Schmidt's attempt to help Clermont County.

DeWine said he'd be happy to do that.

Chabot represents Ohio's 1st Congressional District. The dividing line between Chabot's 1st District and Schmidt's Second Distrist is Vine Street downtown and going due north.

Clermont County is completely in the Second District.

NIOSH researches and recommends ways to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses.

A NIOSH headquarters, which wouldn't be completed until at least 2012, is to occupy a 350,000-square-foot complex.

Jean Schmidt continues to be a disgrace to SW Ohio. You do not seek to harm one county that you represent to help another. If a Congressman wants to get involved in jobs, they should seek to bring new jobs to the district, not pit one part of the district against the other.

Shame on Mean Jean Schmidt. And thank you to Steve Chabot for stepping up for Hamilton County. I may be stuck in that witch Schmidt's district, but Steve Chabot is my real Congressman.

NIOSH is the one who decided to move. Like everyone else they want out of Cincinnati. I can't blame them. Nobody is pitting one against the other except you. NIOSH will make the final decision not Schmidt or Chabot. Nobody except you wants to see NIOSH leave southern Ohio. I am glad Schmidt is trying to keep them here.

According to census data, Ohio will likely lose 2 Congressional reps after the next national reapportionment. Our current districts will encompass larger areas; surely Hamilton County, as a major population center, will be the basis of one district, but Clermont and several of the counties to the east will be merged into a larger district. Some SW Ohio Representatives, now all Republicans, will be pitted against one another. If all else fails before then, this will be a means to rid ourselves of Ms. Schmidt.

Why should Jean Schmidt not continue to encourage growth in Clermont County? Afterall, it is Clermont County that routinely supports her. All she gets from Hamilton County is the likes of Chris Finney, Tom Brinkman and their gang of COAST supporters. Go get 'em Jean.

Actually we are likely to lose 1 Congressional seat. The 2nd loss is possible but not yet likely.

It has already been decided that Ralph Regula (R) will retire and his district will retire with him, he is not from SW Ohio so your prediction (as it stands) is incorrect.

Give Jean Schmidt credit for doing SOMETHING -- nobody else seems to be getting anything done in Washington. Somehow she has managed to locate funding for the Eastern Corridor project, gotten things moving again on the Brent Spence Bridge project and still found time to try and keep NIOSH in SW Ohio.

Anon. 9:52 AM: "Give Jean Schmidt credit for doing SMETHING--nobody else seems to be getting anything done in Washington"...
Here's some of what Jean Schmidt has been doing- voted Against: Ethics Rules, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, Pay As You Go Rules, Medicare Prescription Drug Act; Voted For: (Democratic Proposals) Implement the 9/11 Commission Recommendations, Fair Minimum Wage Act, Student Loan Rates.
Let's follow and post her votes on legislation throughout the 110th Congress.

Jean Schmidt also voted Against: the College Student Relief Act, which will lower student loan interest rates over 5 years. She is one of only 71 Republicans to vote against this Democratic sponsored bill.

Anon 8:24 AM: Are you suggesting that the voters of Regula's district will have no representation in Congress when he retires? AS you must know, the district lines will be redrawn after the 2010 census. Emphasis "redrawn," so that each district has as equal a number of voters as practicable. To suggest that SW Ohio districts will not be impacted along with the rest of the state is not using your head.
An article in Jan. 17 Houston Chronicle cites two firms, Polidata and Election Data Services, that project that Ohio and NY will lose 2 seats, 9 others will lose 1; Texas will gain 3, AZ and FL 2, and several others in the South and West will gain 1.

A shoutout to those male middle-age women haters get over it. Jean Schmidt is your Congresswoman. And she will continue winning.

Jean, How many more examples of divisiveness do I have to see before I actually decide to run against you?

Good luck trying to get anything out of Chabot. The guy has been in Congress now twelve years, and what besides broken promises (only six terms), easier access for criminals to get guns (pocket of the NRA) and back-breaking tax increases on the middle-class and working poor to support tax cuts for millionaires, do we have to show for it? Chabot is a waste, he is a loser, and he is an ineffective congressman who should have been kicked out with the thirty others the Dems beat. Now if only we could find a real candidate instead of John Boy, we'd be all set.

Personally, I think they should both be in jail as accessories to the murder of Marcus Feisel, as detailed on earlier blogs. And I also think that once the investigations in Columbus and Washington get started, the Repugnicant landscape will be drastically altered (if you think Bob Ney is the only crooked Repugnicant in Congress, you must think Barry Bonds is the only baseball player taking steroids).

That said, if both Jean and Congressman Combover are still around when/if their districts are merged, I have to give the nod to Jean.

Jean Schmidt has managed to beat the forces aligned against her in the GOP 4 times in 18 months. She has repeatedly trimuphed against Finney's Fascists, Brinkman's Bigot's and Heimlich's Haters.

And, oh yes, Congressman Combover was behind all that. Finney Fanney managed Chabot's early campaigns. Brinkman's kids have interned for Chabot. A former Chabot crony, Mike Harlow, served as Botox Bob McEwen's Propaganda Minister during the most recent political assassination attempt on Jean Schmidt?

Do we remember that Congressman Combover was one of the people who worked with Finney Fanney to rescind endorsements to trap Jean?

With more Ohioians being killed on the streets of Cincinnati than on the streets in Iraq is it any wonder that everyone is leaving the city. Last one out please turn off the lights.

Check out the latest issue of City Beat. Tom Brinkman is under investigation for forging signatures and addresses on a referendum petition. First Finney & Heimlich are caught doing under the table real estate deals while Heimlich was a Commissioner and Finney played with the taxes. Now Brinkman is caught forging signatures and addresses on petitions. Will this be turned over to the Ohio Elections Commission? Will Brinkman be removed from office? Since the Enquirer called Brinkman "totally ineffective" we won't be missing much. You just can't trust COAST.

Anon 3:10pm:

Read an article using the same data that said Ohio would definitely lose 1 seat but COULD lose 2.

The R's and D's have already agreed that Regula will retire and there would be slight adjustments made by the surrounding districts but NONE that would make any significant shifts in electoral demographics.

OH 1/2 would not be impacted under this scenario (in Contrast to Texas, parties typically don't want to shed blood).

If the 2nd seat were lost, there is currently not a scenario.

Good news for R's is that most of the population is moving to the sunbelt (Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc).

Anon. 1:02: The operative word is "project", based on current trends that are expected to continue through the end of the decade. Two more statewide elections will precede the "adjustments" you foresee. The geographic size of SW Ohio districts will of necessity be impacted; more individuals will have to be included in each Congressional district as the total population of the US in 2010 is divided by the number of Congressional districts (435).
The growth in the South and West is not all due to NRA and NASCAR.
Good news for D's is that the strongest growth in TX is in cities including Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth; OR and WA also expected to gain 1 ea.; growth in NM has already has turned the state D, AZ trending more D and growth in Latino population and emigration of Californians to NV affects their party balance. R's are more than welcome to GA and UT, though these states are also being affected the trends cited above.

I love it when people try to get their (random) point across by making up catchy terms like "Repubnicant", "Congressman Combover", "Finney's Fascists", "Brinkman's (sic) Bigot's", "Botox Bob McEwen", and "Heimlich's Haters".

Good stuff. While the post is off the wall and makes no sense, it's at least entertaining to read.

Well, since everybody is talking about it, I know that the right Democrat can win the existing 2nd District.

I hope that Governor Strickland chooses to do what he said he would do... use the next reapportionment process to design Congressional Districts that are competitive. The only other thing that I need is the trust of the people who live in our district. I believe that candidates should have to work for people's trust. That is what I have been doing for more than the last 2 years. ONE PERSON AT A TIME. And people ARE believing in what I can do for them...

I will run for Congress again in the existing second district before it is changed. I just have not decided when... 2008 or 2010.

And for those of you who think that man from a small rural community can't become the next Congressman to represent the people of Southern Ohio, you haven't met Ted Strickland. He started more than 30 years ago with a pick-up truck, 2 pieces of plywood and a belief that he could change the world.

It was an honor to have tried to be your Congressman 2 times during the last 2 years. I have a responsibility to try again.

Get into www.atr.org, click on "congressional ratings," go to 2006 109th Congress, Ohio, and note that Congresswoman Jean Schmidt's rating is perfect (100%). If you get into the 2005 session of 109th Congress, her rating is 90%. She's confounding the critics (Dems and COAST fanatics--sorry for the redundancy). She's pro-life, pro-traditional family, pro-defense, pro-fiscal restraint, anti-open borders, anti-illegal immigration, and she knows her home district, where she has lived and worked all her life, like the back of her hand. And she's not trying to move NIOSH anywhere. Why the heck should she?

TNP: Why don't you be a little more up front and post what ATR stands for?

at 12:36 PM, January 22, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Because, Anonymous at 12:18 pm, 1/22, I figure anyone interested can spend a second and a half typing www.atr.org. Do you have a broken typing hand?
