DeWine: Something smells at MSD

A budget watchdog, Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine has been on a crusade to make government more efficient and less wasteful.

That's why he made a point Wednesday to question why the Metropolitan Sewer District, which was before the commissioners seeking approval of its annual operating and capital budgets, would be spending taxpayer money helping host a Geography Kids event.

MSD -- owned by Hamilton County but operated by the city of Cincinnati -- participated with several other county and city agency to host 250 grade-school kids.

In the first-time event, the students were shown how local governments "use geography and state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems technology" to improve on planning construction projects, helping clean the environment and maintain roads.

A frustrated DeWine criticized the plan in the public meeting -- where the sewer district was seeking rate increases of 8.6 percent, 8 percent and 8 percent in the next three years -- calling it "offensive."

"We ought to let our schools educate our children," DeWine said.

That drew an instant response from fellow Commissioner Todd Portune who jabbed at DeWine by saying DeWine hadn't given previous MSD budgets the same "scrutiny."

Acting MSD Director Tony Parrott told commissioners the program was aimed at future workforce development, public interest and outreach.

"I think this is the kind of thing that really annoys people about government," DeWine said.

Well, which is it? Will they be hosting (future tense) or have they shown the kids (past tense).

Aside from simple grammar problems, DeWine always attacks what he doesn't understand.

CAGIS and LINK-GIS are leaders in using GIS technology to help save millions of dollars when determining the impact of future development.

Funny how politicians will use public and campaign funds to keep donors/constituents informed of what they are doing and how that is impacting our lives, but if governmental agencies do the same, it is a waste of money.

Mr. Dewine, please investigate why MSD spent funds to sponsor this year's Tall Stacks Event. Please do not allow MSD to do this, while at the same time making the public pay for the new higher rate increases. This should not be!

What really annoys people is minority commissioners who can't stop:

da da da whine-ing !

How's it feel Pat ?

Your grad-stand has been demolished !

Perhaps your good-buddy bird-ing can intercede on your be-half ?

Don't count on it as it shall fall on deaf ears !

City water rates are scheduled to increase by possibly 7% & MSD follows with better than 8% increase.

Gosh, with rates like that, I'll only be able to afford to take a shower once a week, flush the toilet once a month & stop running the clothes washer. I guess I'll start using paper plates & plastic forks for meals.

Better still, I need to move. I can't afford to live in Cincinnati any longer.

the DeWhiner picks small ticket items while he ignors gross mismanagement regarding other "cooperative working agreements" between county offices held by his buddies.

OH yea, in regards to DeWhiner's recent cries about democracy, giving good faith to the voters will regarding a newjail -- where was all this righteous indignation when he gave Drake away without competitive bids and through closed door meetings.
Good job DeWhiner- you should be so "offended" that you punch yourself in the nose

Dewine hates kids that aren't in his plush little private schools.

No, Mr. DeWine, what really annoys people is marble mouthed politicians such as you...

I'm not siding with Portune because his politics stink (and I'm no fan of studdering DeWine), but the commissioners don't realize it's the Fed EPA that requires this kind of waste of tax money. The NPDES permit that the city and county requires public education. Some education is good but the Phase II of the Clean Water Act waste more money than it will ever spend on cleaning up the water. So Pat... they are just doing the things that they are REQUIRED to do... not what they WANT to do.

And Mr. Bolt-Italics... do you realize you do nothing for the conversation other than take up a few bytes slowing down the load time of the page. No one reads or agrees with you conspiracy bashing of the mystical evil Republicans.
