Legislators named 'watchdogs of the treasury'

Five Republican state lawmakers from the Cincinnati area were named "Watchdogs of the Treasury" today by United Conservatives of Ohio.

State Sen. Patricia Clancy of Colerain Township, Sen. Robert Schuler of Cincinnati, Sen. Tom Niehaus of New Richmond, Rep. Bill Seitz of Green Township and Rep. Jim Raussen of Sprindale were among 21 state legislators given the award for 2005-2006 by the Sharonville-based group.

The award goes to state lawmakers who demonstrate a commitment to wise state spending and conservative fiscal policy.

To choose recipients for the award, the group evaluates each state legislator’s voting record on issues they deemed "most indicative of the conservative point of view."

"I am honored to receive this award and will use it as added motivation to continue to fight for responsible fiscal policy in the Senate," Clancy said.

While helping shape the 2005-2006 state budget, the legislators voted to hold state spending to its lowest growth level in 40 years and avert double-digit spending increases in the Medicaid program.

The legislators also are credited with crafting or supporting a tax reform package that included a 21 percent across-the-board income tax cut for all Ohioans while eliminating certain state business taxes that discouraged productivity and job growth.

It's easy for these worthless legislators to spend nothing when they do nothing. Way to go status quo!

I wonder why Brinkman wasn't listed. Could it be they have discovered that Brinkman is truly the worst legislator Ohio has ever had. After all he claims to be against tax increases yet he supported the recent sales tax hike that went down in flames. Talk about a RINO.

Why not just post the actual press release next time instead of pretending you're posting a news item?

The last six years have shown the GOP to be the party of "who do you believe, me or your lieing eyes" when it comes to spending, so this award is laughable.

MSNBC Dec 1, 2006

WASHINGTON - Election night 2006 was dreadful for Republican Senate candidates,
but things could be just as bad two years from now. As it looks now, the Republicans
face a difficult struggle to gain seats in the Senate in 2008.

When the new Congress convenes in January, there will be 49 Republicans in the
Senate and 51 Democrats (including nominal independents Sen.-elect Bernie
Sanders of Vermont and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.)

Of the Republican seats up for re-election, three are held by men who will be over
the age of 75 (Alaska's Ted Stevens, New Mexico's Pete Dominici, and Virginia's
John Warner). Another four are in states which Democratic presidential candidate
John Kerry carried in 2004. And four are in states (Colorado, Virginia, Minnesota
and New Hampshire) where democrats either elected senators on Nov 7 or did very
well up and down the state ballot.

Anon 10:40, I wonder how many times your hero, Jean Schmidt, won this award when she was in the Ohio House. Probably never, since you can't win it by supporting each and every one of Bob Taft's tax increases.

Anon 9:36 AM Actually Schmidt received the "Hero of the Taxpayer" award from Grover Norquist, president of the Americans for Tax Reform. According to Norquist this award was based upon her votes in Congress on taxes, free trade, spending controls and property rights. This group is the nation's leading taxpayer advocacy group. Just in case your interested in the facts.
