I think Joe Deters' comments regarding the black vote and the jail demonstrate how superficial deters is politically.
the issue isn't the size of the jail - the issue is th e size and amount of crime. there are three or more philosophies on how to address crime - the extremes being pure punishment verses rehabilitation. it is proven that you can't just "lock 'em up" anyone with more than a cursory look at the studies and statistics knows the "lock 'em upo" theoroy, on its own, does not work and is the most expensive for taxpayers. But sometimes, rehab is off the table and long term protective ( for society) custody ( incarceration - is the only answer.
portune's rehabiltative "campus" was the best concept introduced - and the enquierer gave it no print.
it combined the hard stance on crime as well as the rehabititation appropriate for the huge majority of misdemeanor offenders.
now , maybe, these ideas and concepts will be explored and real answers can be brought to the fore front.

I found Deters comments on black voters to be self serving and offensive. As a veteran police officer, I know that black victims of crime want criminals locked up just as much as - and probably more than - white victims.

The levy failed because of Deters inept handling of the campaign. Where was the outreach to the black community? Throwing media hound Odell Owens in front of a camera is not enough. If handled properly, black voters would have overwhelmingly supported this.

The commercials supporting the issue were silly and trivial. It should have been presented as a serious issue - not a joke. People in law enforcement are really angry about the inept handling of this campaign.

It's now up to Pepper and Portune to come up with a solution. Please leave Mr. Deters out of it this time.

Deters Should Clean Up His Act and Show Respect for the Law

Thursday, September 16, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SEPTEMBER 16, 2004

Deters Should Clean Up His Act and Show Respect for the Law

COLUMBUS – Today, Joe Deters showed his mouth is as dirty as his politics, said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Dennis White. Instead of apologizing to Ohio taxpayers for disgracing the State Treasurer’s Office, Deters is disrespecting Ohio law enforcement officers who successfully convicted key members of his staff for criminal acts. “Deters can run his foul mouth, but he can’t hide from the facts. His chief of staff and his campaign fund-raiser pleaded guilty to crimes brought by an independent special prosecutor. Those pleas allowed them to avoid more serious charges and an exhaustive examination of how politics and greed controlled the state treasurer’s office,” White said. In today’s Cincinnnati Enquirer, Deters is quoted as saying: “"It's total bull - - - -," about the successful prosecutor of former Chief of Staff Matt Borges, Deters’ fund- raiser Eric Sagun, and lobbyist Andrew Futey, who all pleaded guilty to charges of arranging a scheme of preferential treatment for stockbrokers who made lucrative campaign donations to Deters for his re-election. While Deters desperately tries to accuse the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office of a politically motivated investigation, the facts are clear that a stockbroker was buying influence in the treasurer’s office. Deters has twice flown on the private airplane of broker Frank Gruttadauira, who is serving seven years in prison for cheating his clients out of $125 million. Gruttadauira has admitted to charges of bribery, money laundering and election- law violations. Sagun pleaded guilty to soliciting a $50,000 donation from Gruttadauria for the Hamilton County Republican Party, when both knew the money was really intended to help Deters' campaign. “It’s time for Deters to apologize to the taxpayers of Ohio for his actions, and exit the race for Hamilton County prosecutor. Hamilton County deserves a prosecutor who will crack down on criminals, not employ them,” White said. -30-

people who break the law - should be prosecuted -- PARTICUALRLY THOSE WHO HOLD PUBLIC OFFICE. Too long we have let these polticians worm their way out of jail and retribution - because we think losing their positions were bad enough. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - and we must hold them accoutnable. it is not about "what's done is done" it is about what is right and preventing it from happening again, and again and agian.
i'm for stiffer hefty penalties, not acquice.

Hamilton County sheriff's investigators have questioned Ohio Treasurer Joe Deters about money missing from a drug forfeiture fund he oversaw when he was county prosecutor in 1998.

The questions arose three weeks ago during a criminal investigation into a theft from the prosecutor's evidence room in 1998.

Mr. Deters said sheriff's deputies wanted to know whether a $1,300 check from the drug forfeiture fund was used to cover the loss.

Authorities apparently want to know if there was an attempt to conceal the theft, Mr. Deters said.

"Some people have blown it into a scheme that I am trying to cover something up," Mr. Deters said. "To people who want to make that accusation, I seriously question their motivations."

The investigation targets a former investigator suspected of stealing $2,700 from the prosecutor's office. No charges have been filed.

Mr. Deters said deputies specifically asked if he knew about a check written by Jim Harper, then head of the civil division, and now Mr. Deters' deputy treasurer. Mr. Deters said deputies also questioned Mr. Harper about the check. Mr. Harper could not be reached for comment.

The $1,300 check was drawn from the drug forfeiture fund. Under Ohio law, law enforcement agencies are allowed to take cash or property connected to illegal drug sales. Mr. Deters said he "vaguely" remembers the check from the drug forfeiture fund as well as the missing money from the property room. But he said he doesn't recall whether there was a connection between the two events.

"I assumed people were continuing to look into (the missing money)," he said. The check was written in December 1998. Mr. Deters left the prosecutor's office in 1999 after being elected state treasurer in November 1998.

If you write Representatives offices with a different zip code than the one they serve they will just tranfser your mail. Write Chabot, Schmidt, Boehner, Davis, and let them know how you feel so they know the democratic voice is still there even though they didn't lose.

Dear Mr Blackwell,

Guess what, dude? John Conyers has subpoena power and guess who is near the top of his list? Don't worry, I've seen multiple photo shopped images of you in prison orange, and may I be the first to say you look fabulous in that color. What? You don't want to do any hard times? Well I heat the Bush family just made a major real estate purchase in down in Paraquay, perhaps they'll let you squat on their land. Oops, forget that noise-remember Bab's comments after Katrina?

Dude, you're screwed!

Oh and Mr Blackwell, wanted to let you in on a little rumor. You know, Robert Kennedy Jr and Mike Papantonio (you might recall him as the attorney who took on the big tobacco companies and WON!), well they have a radio show on Air America Radio. Well guess what-they weren't on the air today. Any wonders as to why? Well rumor has it they are out suing the really bad guys over stolen elections. Hmmh-you know any really bad guys? Cuz those bad dudes should be shivering in their boots.

I'd like to thank the unemployed liberal who posted a dozen articles from the past that I doubt anybody bothered to read.

Interesting that Mean Jean Schmidt is still in danger of losing what is supposed to be a Safe Republican seat. She is pathetic. The national GOP has had to spend millions of dollars bailing her out of her own mess. Republicans are losing seats around the country because of all the money that has to be wasted on her.

I know for a fact that newly appointed , federal judge Michael Barrett is being investigated by the discplianary council for his involvement inthe $50K funneled to Deters' campaing. Barrett was the chair of the Republican Party in Hamilton COunty when this illegal conduct occurred. Barrett is alos beinginvestiagted for fraud upon the court by an officer of the court. And the Supreme Court is alleged to have covered up complaints about Barrett inthe mandatory disclosure filed with the Senate before the confirmation hearings for the seat he was appointed to by Bush. Seems they failed to include these records in their "full report" to the Senate.

Hmmm.... and the walls... come tumblin' down...

Will the new Democratic County Commissioners put an end to the practice of employees at the County Courthouse being coerced to do work for the Republican Party? This is an all too common practice at the courthouse. Anyone who wishes to be considered for a promotion MUST do 'volunteer' work for the Hamilton County Republican Party, or they will not even be considered for a promotion.

This corrupt practice must be put to an end by the county commissioners.

From the "Canvass Report--Total Voters--Unofficial, Hamilton County, Ohio--General Election--November 7, 2006," pp. 180-181, vote totals for Congresswoman Jean Schmidt and for Candidate Victoria Wulsin in Anderson Township alone, all precincts: Congresswoman Jean Schmidt-10,224; Dr. Victoria Wulsin-8,379. That's 55-45%. So all the efforts of COAST in Anderson to torpedo the good Congresswoman's fourth election race in the past 17 months FAILED.
Yes, she appears to have lost Hamilton County overall by about 5,000 votes, but she didn't lose it in Anderson. She lost it in the heavily-Democrat precincts closer to the inner city.

How badly is Cincinnati screwed having voted in Schmidt who was actively campaigned against by Murtha? Murtha appears on track to have a significant leadership position in the House and is the number one earmarker on the Democrat side.

My guess is that University of Cincinnati does relatively poorly for the next two years.

All of the corruption at the courthouse is going to be addressed, by the citizens and the voters !

I've stood in the clerks office at the court of appeal and heard the political intimidation !

I've been in a court room and heard the political propaganda !

We are watching, and it is my understanding the FBI is watching as well !

Hopefully, there will be individuals who come forward with their experiences of political intimidation, coercion, etc.

Just have anyone with objections to treatment email the researcher at :

countycourthouse@gmail.com

They will be delivered to the proper authorites !

Well, there seem to be a ton of nuts on this thread. Too bad.
All I wanted to say is thank you Enquirer blog for the coverage on Tuesday night. I got to see one side of the effort -- sitting next to Kimball at the Pepper victory party -- but it was very useful to be able to see what was going on at all the different points of interest that night, and see it all on one site. With you guys and the Beacon, Cincinnatians have a pair of fine political blogs.
Bravo.

Exactly where does the Wulsin/Schmidt race stand right now? Is it just a matter of Warren County finishing up? Is Warren Co's stance that they'll count all the votes when they're good and ready or when they're forced to or what? What's going on?

I thought I'd surely find all the info here, but it looks like the Enquirer staff ain't so enquiring. They don't seem interested in looking at whether Rep. Boehner's strategy of doing absolutely nothing on ethics reform as Majority Leader may have been a less than brilliant game plan.

Anyway, can anyone tell me where to find a rundown of what's what with the OH-02 race right now?
