Portman reflects on Ohio’s election
White House budget director Rob Portman was heavily invested in Ohio’s elections. The former congressman, who still lives in Terrace Park, was in Greater Cincinnati this past weekend actively campaigning for area House members and Sen. Mike DeWine.
Portman headlined a GOP rally in Deer Park on Saturday morning, visited a Blue Ash call center, ate lunch with GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell at Price Hill Chili, then went door to door for Rep. Steve Chabot in Reading.
On Monday, Portman held media events with DeWine in Cincinnati and Rep. Geoff Davis in Northern Kentucky over new economy numbers.
In the end, Chabot, Davis and (probably) Rep. Jean Schmidt were safe. Why?
“It was a tough climate this year in Ohio,” Portman said today. “But I think Congressmen Steve Chabot, Jean Schmidt, Geoff Davis were able to separate themselves from the larger concerns about ethics and Iraq and about other issues.”
But why were they successful when DeWine wasn’t?
“I don’t know how to explain the difference,” Portman admitted.
Is it further proof that all politics is local?
“To some extent,” Portman said. “People know Steve, so it was local in some sense, almost personal. Rather than the national issues being the determining factor, it was about those particular candidates.”
Look for more about Portman in an upcoming edition of The Enquirer.

The Cincinnati suburbs stayed with the GOP. No one else did. This is especially true with the northern and western burbs.
ITS GERRYMANDERING YOU SILLY. NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS.
Rob,
If we can talk Voinovich into retiring before Taft steps down, would you accept Taft's appointment to serve the balance of George's term? Just a thought....
Chabot scared whitey with section 8, crime, and Mexicans. Racist rep of the city.
Schmidt might not have won at all.
Rob,
I know exactly how to explain why Mike Dewine didn't win. And he knows it too. He was up against a wave of change that most people could not overcome.
During the last year of his campaign, Mike Dewine would walk into restaurants and say "hello" to people who would look at him and say that they liked him and that they respected him, but also that they weren't going to vote for him because they believed that the country needed a change.
He was caught up in a wave of change that not even he could overcome. It had nothiong to do with him personally.
The Congressional Districts are different than statewide races. Congressional races are local. I recognize this because I've been in the middle of these multi-county local races for years.
My wife looked at me last night and said, "now that the election is over, what are you going to do now?".
I guess my answer would be...
I'm going to start my days very early.
I'm going to buy a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
I'm going to be everywhere in Southern Ohio.
I'm going to talk with one person at a time and I'm going to listen very closely to what people have to say.
I'm going to keep working on my book.
And I'm going to deliver a letter to Rob Portman asking if I can volunteer some of my time to the number one economic challenge of this century; saving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The President DID say in January that he was going to establish a special commission to investigate how to save these programs for the baby boom generation. Now it is November, and, as I understand it, you are the person who will be leading this effort. Congratulations.
That is what I am going to do this week. I hope that you are willing to listen.
A Man Who Truly Cares About and Believes in the People of Southern Ohio
the success of chabot, boner and possible success of mean jean reflects how bad southwest ohio has been gerrymandered by the rethuglicans. its just amazing how you can take the heavily democratic large population of cincinnati and divide it down the middle so that the people can't vote for the best person.
Steve Chabot's ads were super racist.
The real question is...who is going to run for Governor in 2010?
(Whatever was going on with the "Frisch's Big Boy" promotion was probably not a good idea...so if anyone other than the candidate came up with that idea, then I would certainly question the motives of that "advisor.")
I don't know who's glowing nuclear waste dump idea that was, but, the first group to come out against Cranley's increase in the state min. wage was the "Big Boy's" !
Why would a Dem. spend their money in the wRong wingnut whacko place of business ?
Is he a "DINO" ?
If Cranley's is that stupid, maybe he should visit:
BuyBlue.org
Panera Bread right across the street would have been more appropriate !
Maybe this will humble the arrogant Cranley and he'll start returning calls to Dem candidates who ask him to do his job as precinct exec. and assist in GOTV.
I say he got what he deserves ! Hey, John municipal court races coming up, think you might want to help ? Still waiting for a return call, ya know !
PATHETIC !
The real question is...who is going to run for Governor in 2010?
Why "Ted Strickland" of course silly wRong wingnut wRabbit !
They should be able to impeach the VP and the wRong wingnut misleader !
That would put a female in the Whitehouse as President !
Can anyone say "WAR CRIMES" ?
So Mr. Rob Portman says he can't explain why Mike Dewine lost? If that is true then he really is too stupid for words to describe and it is a good thing he no longer serves the 2nd District in Congress. The answer to why Dewine lost is because he was a Republican in name only for starters. He repeatedly made votes that were extremely bad for both Ohio and for the United States. Case in point the support he gave to the illegal aliens invading the United States. His continued support of that position despite the overwhelming majority of Americans against it along with the obvious problems that the illegals create equals betrayal of Ohio and America. I say good riddance to him and everyone like him in government that we can retire.
