Well, I see this entry was posted at just after 9am this morning and no one else has made a comment, so I will.
Mr Portman (never one of my favorites)did get some favorable notice in the international press this summer...please refer to the London-based "Financial Times", bottom of page 2 of the US print edition, July 24, 2006.
Here we are offered a very nice interview with Mr Portman, who had just been named Director of the Office of Management and Budget (which is a "famous for DC" position).
The article is entitled, "Decaf Guy Aims to Ease Espresso Tensions of Congress." It describes, in quite favorable terms, his easy-going manner, and applauds the way he uses "simple language rather than reach for esoteric expressions."
The FT notes, "in his spacious office near the White House, he has a framed cartoon of himself as a "decaf guy in a double espresso town."
And it continues, "his political past can be read from his bookshelf. Alongside tomes on "NAFTA Revisited," are books by Republican leaders, Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert and Dick Armey, as well as loyal texts of Mr Bush's speeches. A Bible is on his desk."
Now I ask you, could anyone be this much of a complete toady? I mean, really....
Mr Portman, besides being nothing more than the aptly described "choice of the downtown money crowd" never really ran for anything.
He was crowned by Bill Gradison as Gradison's successor. And I do wonder how Gradison (who is of the Jewish persuasion) felt in handing it all over to a Methodist. (I guess he didn't really care since he himself ran off with a million or so in unused campaign funds...they used to allow that.)
Well, I certainly hope Mr Rob Portman enjoys his stint with the Bush regime and that he realizes that this the end of his life in elective politics.
He may have been popular in Cincinnati...appreciated for his good looks and manly Christian virtue........but he is nothing more than a milquetoast and a toady and a complete shill for the monied right-wing.
"Well, I certainly hope Mr Rob Portman enjoys his stint with the Bush regime and that he realizes that this the end of his life in elective politics."
now there's a smart comment. portman could have his choice of statewide offices. without a doubt one of the finest politcians this state has seen or will ever see.
you're an idiot prof. h higgins.
I agree completely. Professor Higgins is a complete idiot. Otherwise, why would he have kicked Eliza to the curb?
If you really think that Portman has a brilliant future in elective politics..ask yourself, "within the next few years, will anyone want to hire anybody associated in any way with the Bush regime?"
My guess is "no."
You, and other non-idiots, can look at other men who have previously held the famous-for-DC position of Director of OMB: especially Dave Stockman.
My view is that Portman was snookered into giving up his Congressional Seat, sort of "Peter-principled" right out of there.....to take on a short stint as Trade Representative (a cabinet level position)...now as his reward for loyal service to the Bush Clan he gets another famous-for-DC position.
To be sure: that OMB Directorship can be directly translated into a huge Wall Street salary someday.
But if Portman was actual to seek an elective position in Ohio, what would he run on?
a) "Vote for me and my Dartmouth, Yale and impeccable silk-stocking Republican credentials. I know how much they mean to all you Ohioans out there who depend on factory jobs to earn a living. Well, I mean, we used to have factory jobs in Ohio...before they all closed and the jobs were sent overseas to China."
b)Vote for me because I have consistently stood at the side of George Walker Bush. I have supported him completely in each and every foreign and domestic policy initiative. And I read the Bible.
c)For for me, because you know I can get the downtown money crowd to fund a really first class campaign. And I have a nice looking family. And we're Methodists. But conservative Methodists.
d)Anyone who gives up a safe Congressional seat is an idiot. Including those who chose not to file for re-election, just because they liked Cincinnati better than DC.
One thing about Portman that I liked was that every year right before April 15, he would issue a call for income tax reform. Never went anywhere, but at least he brought it up. I don't recall Mean Jean or Steve Chabot ever mentioning it.
