Cranley, Wulsin pledge to fight nuclear waste

The two Democrats running for Cincinnati’s two congressional seats got together Wednesday to send a message to voters: Keep nuclear waste out of southern Ohio.

“I am pledging to fight this. I don’t think nuclear waste is good for southern Ohio period,” said John Cranley, who’s running to unseat Republican Rep. Steve Chabot in Ohio's 1st District.

Victoria Wulsin, who is challenging Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt in the 2nd District, said: “We should never import nuclear waste into our backyard.”

Their statements came after Schmidt said she supports a study looking at whether the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion plant in Piketon should be used to temporarily store and recycle spent nuclear fuel rods.

Read The Enquirer's Sun., Oct. 29, story about it HERE.

The proposal has come under fire by environmentalists and neighbors of the plant who are worried that once the waste gets to the plant, it will be stuck there forever.

Schmidt has made it clear that she’s not advocating for or against the plan, but she thinks it should be considered, especially since it could bring thousands of jobs to the economically distressed region.

Check out The Enquirer's Tues., Oct. 31, editorial cartoon by Jim Borgman HERE.

Says Wulsin: “A nuclear waste dump is not the solution to our jobs problem.”

Meanwhile, Cranley called on Chabot to join him in opposing the plan.

“It’s pretty awful that we have a member of Congress in our area trying to bring nuclear waste to the area,” Cranley said. “Chabot should have already criticized his colleague for having recommended the idea.”

So in other words, Jean Schmidt can neither confirm nor deny that because she does not know the answer...

You know who wrote this...

A Man who Cares about the People who Live in Southern Ohio...

The Politicians in Washington Do Not Have a Clue and the Politicians in Washington Do Not Care About You!

If I lived in Cincinnati, I just might have to consider voting for Cranley. I can't believe I just said that...

I read the article in Sunday's Enquirer. Jean Schmidt did not say she wanted a dump site. Jean said I am neither for or against it...This is a study...It will be up to the people in that area to decide....The democrats and the Enquirer are spinning this to be something that it is not. Jim Borgman's cartoon is not what Jean Schmidt said. Why does the Enquirer permit this type of a lie to be printed by printing the Borgman comic?

Just wondering when we will ever hear or read something truthful in this campaign. Will the Enquire print the truth when it is given to them? Or does the Enquirer not let fiction get in the way of a good story?

Hey anon 10:40,
How can the Enquirer permit this type of lie? Well, they just endorsed Jean for the second time in 6 months, so they must be pretty comfortable with violating their integrity.

How can the Enquirer endorse a candidate that is a convicted liar! She was publicly reprimanded by the OEC for a purposely misleading voters. She had numerous ethics violations in the state house including, but not limited to: failing to report contributions from lobbyists. The woman is as corrupt as they get.

With 5 days to go until election day, she cannot be saved. All you Schmidt-head losers should just give up, there is no hope for your floundering, failure of a campaign.

Warm Wishes,

I-71 Commuter

I-71 Commuter - I hope you're better at driving than you are at political punditry.

In a way, I feel bad for all of the Wulsin supporters...You guys are clearly counting your chickens before they hatch, and this is going to be a tough loss for you to swallow. But hey, if you can take Kerry losing, I'm sure you'll do find with Wulsin losing. After all, you guys ought to be used to it by now. However, I can't lie. It will be joyful watching the Schmidt haters cry themselves to sleep next Tuesday.

The only people crying themselves to sleep on Tuesday night will be Jean's wrinkly sister, phone boy, & Tim Rudd.

Then Jean's once competent staff will be forced to enter the brutal world of the private sector. Good luck! No more arriving by 9:00 and leaving by 5:00. What will a degree from UC Clermont actually land you in this world? The Answer - About as much clout as Jean's fake teaching degree!

The only Jean supporter not crying on Tuesday night will be Peter Schmidt, who I hear has lost an incredible amount of business since his wife started making headlines.

How fast will Jean return her corn powered car once she loses to Wulsin by 8% and loses 7% of the republican vote to REAL REPUBLICAN WRITE-IN CANDIDATE NATE NOY?

Today is a special day in Jean Schmidt's political career. For it was on this date in 1989 that her first lie appeared in print. It was in the November 2, 1989, Clermont Sun. She was a candidate for Miami Township Trustee, an election she won while claiming to be a teacher with two degrees.

On page 7A, in a candidate profile, Schmidt claimed to have two college degrees, and "some graduate work." Though dropping the bit about the graduate work, she repreated this lie in 1993, 1997, 2002, 2002, 2004, and 2005, in all of her subsequent campaigns.

She listed "teacher" as her occupation, which technically was correct, as she was an aerobics instructor.

When caught earlier this year peddling this lie, she first claimed that she had the hours, but never filled out the paperwork for a degree. She claimed she put it off because her mother was dying. She stopped attending class in 1986. Her mother died in 1990. While her mother was dying, she found the time to run for office.

Next, she blamed the error on the person who put together her website in 2000. In sworn testimony, she could not remember who that person was. She also claimed to have never read her own website until early 2006.

Jean said I am neither for or against it...

Correction:

She was actually for it before she was against it !

Flip-flop, Flip-plop, Flip-flop

Liar, Liar, schmidt'y pants on fire !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2006 !

Ohio 2nd - Generally thats what an 'idea' is. I realize democrats aren't used to having these "ideas", but usually, if you come up with an 'idea', you probably think its a good one. Unfortunately for the Schmidt haters, most people who read newspapers read more than the first sentence. I'm actually shocked that you guys think the constituents of the second district are stupid enough to fall for your spin (although i'd expect it from someone like Wulsin who is so out of touch with the constituents of the 2nd district she'd say millionaries are middle class). The only people who could logically oppose this 'idea' are wacko environmentalists. However, most people believe reusing 95% of nuclear waste (instead of storing 100% of it in a mountain somewhere), as well as bringing thousands of jobs to the local economy (and $), and getting nuclear waste out of the hands of those who could potentially give it to terrorists (ie: russia) is a good idea. But you guys have never been good at these things we call 'ideas', now have you?

I guess Wulsin forgot about her letter dated Oct. 31, 2006 to various Pike County union leaders expressing her support for this nuclear study. In fact she commended Pike County leaders for responding quickly. These are the same leaders who came to Congresswoman Schmidt for help to obtain funding for the study. Wulsin went on to say that Piketon should be "a hub for advanced energy technology development" in other words, nuclear. A second letter from the United Steelworkers dated November 1, 2006 to Wulsin stated "Most importantly, no elected official including your opponent Congresswoman Schmidt, union member, or community leader supports the idea of creating a waste dump at the Piketon site". These letters will be posted soon. Looks like Wulsin has been caught lying again. You just can't trust Vic Wulsin.

I-71 Commuter sounds like John Kerry. You're not the smartest of the smart? Send you to Iraq!

I-71, stop reading Schifrin's false and just plain awful "newsletter" and also realize how much better Congresswoman Schmidt is for you than Vic Wulsin.

I can't believe that Wulsin would forget to tell Cranley about the letter from the union leaders regarding the Piketon site or the letter she sent commending the study. Sure makes Cranley look stupid.

Convince Ford Motor company to maintain a transmission plant in your district by purchasing a gas-guzzling GM product !

Oh, yes !

Bright as a schmidt'y nuclear waste dump !

The October 31 Wulsin letter to the union does NOT support the SONIC nuclear waste dump "study." It explicitly supports a study of site cleanup and decommissioning -- a different study. On the next day, Nov. 1, Ohio EPA sent a letter to DOE demanding that studies beigin of cleanup and decommissioning. THIS is what Wulsin referred to.

The issue has been confused by one individual, Dan Minter, who is president of the union, an open Schmidt supporter, and the leading advocate of the SONIC dumping proposal.

Union members do not share his opinions. They depend on cleanup and decommissioning jobs and they support Wulsin.

Minter played this issue hoping for some last-minute Schmidt attack to save her candidacy.

Pathetic.
