Cook Report ranks Schmidt-Wulsin race as "Toss-Up"

The Cook Report just upgraded the 2nd District race between freshman Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt and Democrat Victoria Wulsin as one of 44 House races across the country that are considered a "Toss-Up," which is a term used for the most competitive races.

Considering that Schmidt wasn't even listed by the Cook Report before July 19, that's quite a change. Check out this progression...

July 19 - "Likely Republican"

Oct. 18 - "Likely Republican"

Likely: These seats are not considered competitive at this point but have the potential to become engaged.

Oct. 20 - "Lean Republican"

Lean: These are considered competitive races but one party has an advantage.

Oct. 30 - "Toss-Up"

Toss-Up: These are the most competitive; either party has a good chance of winning.

FYI, the 1st District race between Republican Rep. Steve Chabot and Democrat John Cranley has been ranked as a "Toss-Up" since Sept. 7.

Cook is half-cocked. Chabot vs. Cranley belongs in Likely Democrat.

No way that the Chabothead can win now. I don't know what he did to tick off the NRCC but they sunk his ship with the taser ad. Big time.

Anyone who has ever so much as driven by Chabot headquarters should seriously recosinder if they have a future in politics.

That interesting especially when the latest pro democratic poll shows Schmidt up by 5. This poll is designed to promote Democrats by sampling weak Republicans and strong Democratics. The real spread is usually twice what they report.
Poll Date Sample Schmidt (R)* Wulsin (D) Und. Spread
RT Strategies/CD 10/24 - 10/26 972 LV 51 46 3 Schmidt +5.0

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Pat DeWine and Jean Schmidt are the only 2 Republicans I know of who could actually lose this district. If Wulsin wins, Republicans have nobody to blame but themselves. We have had 2 opportunities to nominate a credible candidate, but instead we keep coming up with that lousy person Mean Jean Schmidt. In 2008 we need a candidate who we know can hold this district.

everyone has been moved to toss up. Shoddy reporting as usual, mallia.

Schmidt's toast.

I mean, why would anybody vote for someone who would say, a week before a tight election, that their district ought to be a nuclear waste dumping ground? Why would you vote for someone who doesn't even have the sense to shut up on this one until after the election??!?!?

It's an absolute sign of incompetence.

I'm a conservative Republican, but, I'm voting a straight democratic ticket.

I've had enough of this schmidt.

Schmidt's Incompetence in Congress: We Deserve Better-Vote for Wulsin

A whopping 69 percent of voters disapprove of the work of Congress, according to recent opinion polls.

Here in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District, voter disapproval is even more widespread due to the culture of corruption pervading both Washington and Columbus (Abramoff, Ney, Taft, Noe, Schmidt, and Foley). Given the mess created by Jean Schmidt and her friends in power, it is difficult to fathom how the Enquirer could get it so wrong by recommending her for re-election. Her so-called "experience" might more aptly be characterized as "incompetence." Clearly, the Cook Political Report "gets it." This race is going down to the wire. Schmidt's "nUclear" proposal will likely sink her ship.

Because she has: sided with Bush on over 94% of votes, violated house rules by calling a colleague and decorated Korean and Vietnam war hero, Rep. John Murtha, a "coward" (the Congressional Record was amended after the fact to expunge her disrespectful comments), voted to cut college loans for our kids while supporting tax credits for oil companies, she must be held accountable.

And, let's not forget the 800-pound gorilla in the room. Schmidt's blind support for Bush's disastrous war in Iraq including the ineptitude of the "stay the course" policy, is not acceptable to most Americans. This war will go down as one of the biggest bungles in U.S. history. It would be irresponsible to allow those who rubber-stamp it to remain in office.

Fortunately, the voters have a choice. We can vote for someone who demonstrates integrity, honesty, civility, and competence: someone like Dr. Victoria Wulsin.

Vote for Victoria Wulsin; we deserve better.

Yeah right. Conservative republican... lol. You don't have to lie to make the "bandwagon" argument.

What was that? The second district is a Toss-Up? You may need to say that again and say it really loud because TNP is having problems with his hearing these days.

You need to investigate what nuclear industry and utility company campaign contributions Jean has gotten -- or has been promised -- in exchange for warehousing their spent fuel. Also check the companies involved in the transport, processing and storage of this waste (which was supposed to go to Utah and elsewhere)

You dimwits are dreaming if you think Chabot and Schmidt are going to lose to those losers you put up!!!

ZZZZZZZZZ

HaHaHaHaHa!!!!

If Schmidt-Wulsin is really a "toss-up," the real shocker is that around 50% of the people in that district approve of Schmidt. Looks like she's already imported the nuclear waste and it's gotten into the water supply.

52% of Republican voters DID NOT support Jean Schmidt in the May primary.

Need I say more?

She's just that awful. Let me count the ways:

1) Terrible public speaker. Terrible.

2) Stupid as the day is long. From the Murtha comment to the nuclear waste dump, this woman shoots her mouth first and thinks second.

3) Not fiscally conservative (unless it serves her politically). Need I remind you people that she voted FOR Bob Taft's tax increase - the largest in Ohio's history.

4) She lied about having a college degree she never earned.

5) When confronted, she continued to lie by blaming it on a web designer when in fact she's been lying about it since 1989, fully 12 years BEFORE she ever had a web site.

6) Plagiarized a newspaper story, then blamed one of her staffers.

7) Recently sent out a fundraising letter that contained so many typos and grammatical errors that the Cincinnati financial community collectively wadded it up and tossed it into the trash.

8) Nearly lost a solid House seat to Paul Hackett long before the general public was aware of her incompetence. Why? Because she's just not impressive in any way whatsoever. She is a complete imbecile. Don't believe me? Just listen to her talk for 5 minutes. It's unbearable.

I could go on and on, but what is the point? I'm only here to insult the staffers that work for her, because in order to stoop that low, you either have to be desperate, stupid, or equally ignorant.

Please, conservative voters of the 2nd Congressional District - do not elect this woman to Congress.

Write in Nate Noy as your conservative alternative, or just go ahead and vote for Victoria Wulsin. Don't worry... it'll only be a temporary setback - we'll take back the seat in 2008 with a REAL candidate by then. Either Joe Deters, Phil Heimlich, Tom Brinkman or some other proven conservative who isn't so embarrassing.

From what I understand about Schmidt's support of a study looking at using the Piketon plant for a nuclear waste dump, there are actually a couple of issues going on. First, there has been a plan in the works since the days of Rob Portman to convert the old Piketon plant to a facility that will do contract work (like decontaminating uranium materials) for the Department of Energy. I found the environmental impact report for that use online (http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr1834/cover-title.pdf). The site needs to be cleaned up now because at some point in the past leaks contaminated the aquifer under the site.

The second, far more frightening possibility for the site is the one being explored by Jean Schmidt. She supports studying the possibility of using the site as a long-term storage site for nuclear waste from around the world. Coincidentally, just yesterday there was an article in The Enquirer reporting completion of the removal of contaminated soil, etc., from the Fernald site. That waste was moved to storage outside of Ohio, in part, because of the risks to aquifers and groundwater -- and thus the health of people -- if the contaminants were stored here. Knowing that, it's beyond me why anyone would even consider storing nuclear waste at a site not really very far from Fernald, a site that also sits over an aquifer. It strikes me that this is just one more example of how much Jean Schmidt adheres to ANYTHING President Bush suggests. This plan is related to Bush's Global Nuclear Energy Partnership program, which in a nutshell is intended to make nuclear materials that are only useful for producing nuclear energy (not weapons). But again, why would anyone consider using Pike County as a dumping ground for nuclear wastes from around the world, just to show Bush that we're cooperating with his program??? The site experienced a leak in the past; can anyone guarantee it won't happen again? And how about the risks of traffic accidents with the trucks/trains/etc. transporting nuclear waste to the site? Do we really want those materials traveling across our state?

The Democrats peaked early in SW Ohio, especially in the 2nd District. Dr. Wells/Dr. Wulsin really isn't electable in this district, and I predict a 10 to 14 point win for Schmidt. Cranley and Chabot in the 1st District? I think that Cranley also peaked early there. I predict a Chabot win by 4 to 7 points.

Anonymous at 7:28, 10/31, if I can't hear, you can't see. The first post on the Enquirer political blog shows Congresswoman Jean Schmidt with a 5-point lead over pro-abortion Wulsin. Come back in 2008, and we'll duke it out again, smart-mouth. Meanwhile, this one's in the jar for Jean.

You need only look toward the primaries.

Wulsin will get all the Dem voters that voted in the primary because they are just that motivated.

Jean will get those that did vote for her, but, the rest of the wRong wigs are up in the air, period !

Strickland will win and by such a large percentage that the coat tails will bring Wulsin right along.

Especially, since the Dem's have a real surprise for schmidt at the last minute. Maybe even an election campaign complaint 3 Days before the election ?

I can't wait, she is DONE !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2006 !

TNP,

I noticed your favorite poll, SurveyUSA, now has your meal-ticket LOSING to Vic Wulsin.

What say you now?

Sad, sad, sad. You're pathetic yet consistent defense of Schmidt might soon require you to refer to her as "Former Congresswoman Jean Schmidt."

Perhaps once she gets booted from office she'll have enough free time that she can go back and finish those 40 credit hours and finally earn her college degree.

"Paul Hackett," you are a liar. You are not Paul Hackett. Hackett's a Marine who wouldn't stoop to get catty and cute on a political blog. I served with the Marines for 12 months in Vietnam. I know them well and respect them extremely well. And you are a liar pretending to be a proud Marine.

In addition to being a liar, you are wrong. Congresswoman Jean Schmidt is not my "meal-ticket" (sic). My career has nothing whatsoever to do with her success or failure in this or any other race.

Furthermore, you are not only a liar who is also wrong in your groping assessment of who or what I am in relation to my Congressional Representative, but in addition you are wrong in your prediction that pro-abortion, pro-same-sex "marriage" advocate Victoria Wulsin will win on Nov 7.

Man, I'm sure glad you don't build skyscrapers. As dishonest and mistake-plagued as you are, no one would ever want to rent space in something you cobbled together.
