No fruit throwing

Cliff Radel reports from Green Township

From a debate held at the Western Hills Country Club this morning at a breakfast meeting of the Western Economic council. It is the third in a series of five scheduled exchanges between Rep. Steve Chabot, the incumbent Republican representing Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, and Cincinnati City Councilman John Cranley, his Democratic challenger.

Before the debate began, Bob Polewski, president of the council of West-Side boosters, jokingly asked the standing room only audience to observe the following rules:

“No booing. No hissing. And certainly, no fruit throwing.”

During the debate, Chabot and Cranley politely disagreed as they exchanged views about government spending, eminent domain and Hamilton County’s doctor shortage.

Both candidates avoided directly answering a question about receiving campaign contributions from sectors of the public housing industry.

Chabot invoked the “liberal” word and used the phrase “left-wing” three times each to describe Cranley.

The councilman stressed early and often how Chabot’s conservative values had changed while in Washington. Cranley repeatedly noted “it’s time for a change.”

Chabot backed a bill that would create yet another obstacle in the community's fight to control and protect their neighborhoods. Chabot's bill, passed by the HOuse and heading for the Senate, will allow big corporations, including housing developers who profit enormously fromSection 8 programs, to wage a fight in federal courts to diminish the rights of local, home rule governments utilizing community planning and zoning rules to thwart an influx of subsidized housing into our neighborhoods.
Chabot claims to be against the infiltration of subsidized housing but led the charge to take rights away from communities to fight it, as well as efforts such as Legacy Place, the Norwood development, the Rumpke expansion, City Link - and upcoming issues such as a new jail site, half way houses for child molesters and addicts, ...
Chabot is full of baloney - he really has changed - he either no longer understands our needs or no longer cares - either way - it is time for us to make the change for our community's sake.

I was there. Radel took very, very few notes. The packet that Elliot Ruther, Cranley's campaign manager, handed to Radel afterwards was probably very helpful.

That is the normal Republican thing to do attack the person not the issue.

Chabot has no power, he is simply a cog in the GOP machine. Chabot can't vote against bills evfen if he wanted to. Rove won't allow it.

Be sure and read Rolling Stone's excellent article. Worst Congress Ever.

The GOP has abdicated all oversight responsibility. They have not investigated anything.

Congressional laziness comes at a high price. By leaving so many appropriations bills unpassed by the beginning of the new fiscal year, Congress forces big chunks of the government to rely on "continuing resolutions" for their funding. Why is this a problem? Because under congressional rules, CRs are funded at the lowest of three levels: the level approved by the House, the level approved by the Senate or the level approved from the previous year. Thanks to wide discrepancies between House and Senate appropriations for social programming, CRs effectively operate as a backdoor way to slash social programs. It's also a nice way for congressmen to get around having to pay for expensive-ass programs they voted for, like No Child Left Behind and some of the other terminally underfunded boondoggles of the Bush years.

"The whole point of passing appropriations bills is that Congress is supposed to make small increases in programs to account for things like the increase in population," says Adam Hughes, director of federal fiscal policy for OMB Watch, a nonpartisan watchdog group. "It's their main job." Instead, he says, the reliance on CRs "leaves programs underfunded."

Instead of dealing with its chief constitutional duty -- approving all government spending -- Congress devotes its time to dumb bullshit. "This Congress spent a week and a half debating Terri Schiavo -- it never made appropriations a priority," says Hughes. In fact, Congress leaves itself so little time to pass the real appropriations bills that it winds up rolling them all into one giant monstrosity known as an Omnibus bill and passing it with little or no debate. Rolling eight-elevenths of all federal spending into a single bill that hits the floor a day or two before the fiscal year ends does not leave much room to check the fine print. "It allows a lot more leeway for fiscal irresponsibility," says Hughes.

As much as the little self absorbed thwart, cranley, is, he is still the best choice !

I was at his rally at his famous covedale theater. I was with laptop in hand completing my days work and checking my email !

I had paid the 9.95 to have access to the cincinnati bell hotspot for that day in the theater. I had contact reports to enter for my firm !

Well, guess what ?

One of cranly's campaign cronies approached me and wanted to know WHO I was and WHY I had a laptop !

Being the individual that I am, I politely asked the guy why he wanted to know ? He stated he wanted to know if I was the press !

I told him I wasn't, but, was a blogger !

He left and guess what happened, next ?

The wireless signal mysteriously disappeared !

Now, everyone here, knows that I am the most vocal speaker against the wRong wingnut whackos, right !

But you see, I am not a hack !

I waited to tell the story, until the time was right !

Everyone here knows, I'm an advocate of free speech:

Hamilton County Republican Party .com

I found what happened to me at that event appalling, and pathetic !

The cronies may deny the incident, but, once I saw the direction of the conversation, I pulled up sound recorder and have the sound file !

Now, all the leaders, possibly cranley, know who I am, but, the public must be made aware of this, I think ?

I apologize to those that may think I should remain silent, but, I put my country above any party ideology !

I believe in full disclosure !

Now, cranley, will get my vote because he is better than the rubber-stamping chabothead !

However, I think we need a spot where the public can voice their opinion and send candidates back to the primary with a:

"None of the Above" vote !

Until then:

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2006 !

The GOP talking points are getting tiresome, "Liberal, Liberal, Liberal" and tax raiser.

This is hypocritical, coming from the party that has control of all 3 branches of government, on whose watch spending, but not tax receipts have sky rocketed, resulting in the most profligate deficit spending of any administration.

Who is going to be the adult and clean up this mess of cronyism, corruption and pork barrel earmarks?
