Trolling for dollars in Ohio

Today, while the Cincinnati Republican candidate for governor, Ken Blackwell, rakes in campaign cash from rich northeast Ohio Republicans with the help of President Bush in a Cleveland version of Indian Hill, Democrat Ted Strickland is planning some August trips to Cincinnati to shake the money tree.

Republicans raising money in Cleveland. Democrats raising money in Cincinnati. Maybe there really is some kind of polar shift going on in Ohio politics.

On Aug. 11, the Hamilton County Democratic Party will host a $150 per ticket fundraising reception for Strickland at the Westin hotel downtown, followed by a Hamilton County Democratic Forum rally at the Freedom Center.

Bigger than that, though, are the two fundraising events Strickland and his wife Frances will do here on Aug. 22 - a reception at the Bell Event Centre in Pendleton where tickets will go for $250 and $500 each, followed by a dinner event in Indian Hill, where tickets are $1,000 person or $5,000 and $10,000 per couple. No word on the difference is between $5,000 and $10,000 levels. Maybe you get to take home the leftovers.

Both of the Aug. 22 events are being organized by Barbara Gould, the interior designer and Democratic activist who has lately been giving Stan Chesley a run for his money as chief Democratic cash-producer in these parts.

Blackwell Can't Match Bush, Taft Records on Disclosure

Ken Blackwell talks transparency, but Ohioans can see through his rhetoric

Columbus, Ohio - When millionaire Ken Blackwell appears side by side with President George W. Bush and Governor Bob Taft tonight at an exclusive $2 million fundraiser, he'll be able to compare his record of failed leadership--but not his tax returns.

Blackwell has proclaimed himself a champion of transparency in campaign finance and government, going so far as to call disclosure a "Republican idea," and yet he refuses to release his returns, failing to match even Bob Taft's record of transparency. [Cleveland Plain Dealer, 3/21/02]

According to the Toledo Blade, every Ohio gubernatorial candidate in the last 35 years has released his tax returns, including Taft. And in April, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney released their returns, indicating that Americans have a right to know just where their elected officials earn their income.

"Mr. Blackwell treats transparency in government as a punchline, not a serious effort to make sure Ohio voters know more about the income and motivations of their elected officials," said Keith Dailey, spokesman for gubernatorial candidate Congressman Ted Strickland.

In 2002, Blackwell's spokesman Carlo LoParo said "Both the governor and the secretary of state believe all dollars in the political arena should be disclosed without exception." [Cleveland Plain Dealer, 6/18/02]

In 2004 as pay-to-play scandals plagued Columbus, Blackwell said "every political dollar should be subject to transparency." [Columbus Dispatch, 7/11/04]

Ken Blackwell desperately wants to be seen as separate from the scandal-plagued Republican leadership that has run Ohio for 16 years, and in fact, he is--he represents even less transparency and accountability in government than Bob Taft.

Democrats & Republicans Agree (!)

It's Fair To Ask Ken Blackwell Why He Won't Release His Tax Returns

Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio Republican Party yesterday joined Democratic and independent voters alike with their admission that Ken Blackwell should answer "why" he is the first gubernatorial candidate in more than 20 years refusing to make his tax returns available to the voters.

According to Gongwer News Service, Ohio Republican Party Communications Director John McClelland yesterday acknowledged that it is "a fair question to ask Ken Blackwell" what Ohio voters might conclude from Blackwell's refusal to make his tax returns available to the public.

"Ask[ed] what conclusion voters might draw from reluctance of the millionaire former radio station owner to disclose the information, Mr. McClelland said: “That’s a fair question to ask Ken Blackwell.”" [Gongwer News Service, 08/02/2006]

"We agree. Ohioans have a right to know how much money their next governor earns and exactly how much he stands to gain if Mr. Blackwell's own misguided tax schemes are implemented," said Strickland for Governor Communications Director Jess Goode. "What is it that Ken Blackwell doesn't want Ohio voters to know?"

Voters already know that Blackwell became a millionaire while serving in public office. And while his salary is set by the state, Blackwell has refused to release tax returns that would reveal his other sources of income or how much he stands to make from his own tax proposals.
