Schmidt's new SUV fires readers up

Thursday's Enquirer ran this story about Rep. Jean Schmidt's new red SUV (pictured at right) that runs on E85, a blend of ethanol and gas. According to Schmidt, she bought the car because she doesn't want to send any more of her money to the Persian Gulf.

The story started after Schmidt e-mailed this weekly column to reporters late Wednesday. (Scroll to the bottom to read the last paragraph.)

Since running in the paper, we've received more than two dozen e-mails about the story. Many wondered what good it did for Schmidt to buy a car that runs on E85 when there aren't any ethanol stations anywhere near her district. That's a good point. But, actually, Milford-based Lykins Oil plans to open a new ethanol station near Schmidt's home in Miami Township later this month or in early September. (This detail was edited out of the story.)

Here are some other comments about the story:

Columbus: "It’s ironic that Schmidt is glorifying her SUV. The gas consumption of SUV’s are a main reason why fuel prices are so high. It’s the demand that drive prices. "

Undated: "You've got to be kidding! 'She has struck her own blow on the war on terrorism.' How much were you paid to write this piece of junk? ... I guess Schmidt buying a nice big SUV puts her right up there with all of our troops fighting and dying around the world truly fighting terrorism. "

Anderson Township: "What a pathetic piece of showmanship on the part of corrupt Republicans and their partisan media! Who cares about this moronic politician's choice of cars? With the Republican record on environmental concerns, this doesn't even come close to making amends!"

West Chester: "Jean Schmidt's new Tahoe is one of the biggest fuel hogs in GM's entire fleet. If it is a 4WD running on E85, the estimated mileage is 11 city and 14 highway mpg. And that requires a light foot and not exceeding 65 mpg on the highway. I am not impressed with her 'sacrifice' for the country."

Cincinnati: "I can't help myself here. I just read your article about Jean Schmitt in the Cincinnati Enquirer, and that was thiry seconds of my life I'll never get back. Frankly the most shocking part about this story, is that she doesn't drive a broom where ever she goes!! Here is a idea for your next story, write a story telling us how much she cares about our enviroment."

Undated II: "It takes an incredibly inept politician to stage a photo-op claiming she is going to use less 'Persian Gulf Oil' by purchasing a vehicle that gets 13 mpg on gasoline and even less on ethanol; but we’ve seen Jean Schmidt with her foot in her mouth before when she had to retract her statements on the House floor so maybe this is the norm."

Cincinnati II: "Victoria Wulsin's remarks, 'Schmidt's purchase smacks of insincerity,' do not seem to indicate Ms. Wulsin understands ethanol any more than Congresswoman Schmidt understands it. Indeed, if anything Schmidt's Chevy Tahoe purchase (and intention) is very sincere yet perhaps very ignorant. ... Frankly, I think her purchase and her reasons why make her seem somewhat 'out of touch.'"

What do you think?

To add fuel to this vehicle of a story... Here is a press release sent out by the Wulsin campaign the day the story about Schmidt's new SUV ran:
SCHMIDT CONTINUES POSTURING, DOES NOTHING FOR OHIO
Congresswoman buys luxury ethanol car, but voting record is 100% pro-Big Oil

Cincinnati, Ohio – Continuing her record of political grandstanding, Rep. Jean Schmidt touted her purchase of a luxury ethanol 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe yesterday after having spent a year as Big Oil's handmaiden. Schmidt has received a 0 % rating from the League of Conservation Voters and has voted for oil subsidies that even President Bush opposed.

On Wednesday, Schmidt sent out a taxpayer-financed email to her constituents that said "I recently purchased a new ethanol powered vehicle as my daily driver…We have had decades of talk. It is now time to act in the best interests of our country."

"Schmidt talks about her car, but her votes have been pro-Big Oil and anti-farmer" said Wulsin campaign manager Mary Huttlinger. "Voters don't care what kind of car Schmidt drives, they care about how she votes."

On May 24, Schmidt voted for $50 million in taxpayer-funded subsidies for big oil companies to perform deep-sea drilling. Even President Bush opposed those subsidies, saying that "With oil at more than $50 a barrel...energy companies do not need taxpayers'-funded incentives to explore for oil and gas." The Administration sought to strip the subsidies from its FY 2007 budget. (HR 5427, Vote #201, /24/2006).

On October 7, 2005, Schmidt voted against clamping down on price gouging by oil companies, even as her constituents were paying huge prices at the pump and for their home heating bills. (HR 3893 , Vote #517).

On October 7, 2005, Schmidt voted for an energy bill that limited the use of cleaner fuels and hampered the production of less-polluting low sulfur diesel fuel (H.R. 3893, Roll Call 519).

My name is Jim Parker and for those of you who don't know me, Last fall, I was the first Democratic Candidate in America to announce my candidacy against Jean Schmidt. I knocked on the doors of thousands of families who live in Southern Ohio from Lebanon and Cincinnati all the way to Waverly and Portsmouth. Despite the incredible number of people who believed in me on election day, I didn't win the primary but lost to a wonderful person, Doctor Victoria Wulsin.

Doctor Wulsin and I have both tried to be your United States Representative, not once but twice; first in the special election of 2005 and then again in 2006. And never once did I run against Doctor Victoria Wulsin, I ran with her. She is a wonderful human being who I will be honored to vote for this November. Doctor Wulsin and I both worked tirelessly to gain your trust and support in order to be the person who would be lucky enough to be the Candidate for US Congress who would run against Jean Schmidt in November. I believe that Doctor Wulsin will be a great Congresswoman and that she will represent ALL people who live in the 2nd District of Ohio.

During the special election of 2005, I proposed that the White House should offer a $1 million dollar reward to any American (man, woman or child) who could design an engine that could get more than 100 miles to the gallon. I sent a letter to the President of the United States. I sent the same letter to Jean Schmidt. Her response was to send me an e-mail in in which she explained that she would be voting for the 2005 energy bill. Then, that is exactly what she did.

That energy bill gave the single greatest tax break to oil companies since the invention of the American automobile.

I am a Democrat who believes in middle class tax breaks. Tax breaks are good for people's families, NOT OIL COMPANIES. At least not when those same oil companies have continuosly posted the highest profits in their corporate fiscal history. This has been occurring while you and your families have been paying the highest prices for fuel that our country has ever seen.

I believe that my initial proposal was wrong. The reward should be raised to $25 million dollars. I also believe that the President should take personal responsibility in guaranteeing that the product (an engine that gets at least 100 miles per gallon) is made standard as an option in new vehicles that are produced in the United States of America. I told the President in my communication that he should be personally responsible for assuring that the US automobile manufacturers had the resources that they need to bring such a product to market before the end of LAST year (2005). Now this year (2006) is almost over and we still have no solution. Somebody in this country needs to step up and take responsibility for this incredibly challenging economic issue.

This new technology can be introduced at the same time that we continue to develop alternative sources of energy in order to free our dependence on foreign oil. The cost of oil is hurting our economy. It is hurting our families, our businesses and our farms.

So why is it that the only solution that we see is for our Congresswoman to purchase a vehicle that most people who live in our district can't afford and then publicize her initiative?

I challenged Jean Schmidt to a debate to be held in Hamilton, Warren or Clermont Counties at least 50 times during the last year and have had zero response.

Now I encourage you to call her office and do the same. Ask Jean Schmidt to debate Doctor Wulsin in August or September of 2006. Let's see a debate in Hamilton, Warren or Clermont County between Congresswoman Jean Schmidt and Doctor Victoria Wulsin. Let's see who really has the best answers about the future direction of America's Energy Policy. I expect that this challenge will be ignored by the Congresswoman just like she has ignored so many challenges before.

But I will most certainly tell you one thing... No such challenge would have ever been ignored by me. No such challenge would have ever been ignored by Bob McEwen. No such challenge would be ignored by Doctor Victoria Wulsin. It is only right that the voters of the 2nd District of Ohio have the opportunity to hear what our elected leaders and political candidates have to say. Maybe the Cincinnati Enquirer will host this event???

The alternative is that you can just continue to ignore the problems of today and blindly re-elect officials without holding them accountable. You can just allow a rubber stamp to become the Washington seal of American approval. But I warn you, hold onto your wallets because if we don't do something now we will all pay the price later. The future direction of American Energy policy can save billions of dollars for American taxpayers, businesses, consumers, families... But it has to be the right future direction and it has to happen now.

Let's see a debate between Doctor Wulsin and Congresswoman Schmidt. Call your Congresswoman.

Thank you.

Jim Parker, Former Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Waverly, Ohio (Pike County)

Does anyone notice when reading these comments that there are none about the idiotic comments by Wulsin? Where's the fair and balanced? Oh yeah, forgot it's the Enquirer!

I HATE GENE SCHMIDT WITH A PASSION! GET HER OUT!

This is for anon 12:02 who can't seem to read. "Cincinnati II: "Victoria Wulsin's remarks, 'Schmidt's purchase smacks of insincerity,' do not seem to indicate Ms. Wulsin understands ethanol any more than Congresswoman Schmidt understands it"

The Enquirer is a right-wing rag.

I don't know which is more pathetic: the Enquirer running a Schmidt press release promoting herself or the vitriolic reactions of some of these readers e-mailing the Enquirer about it.

Some people really need to get themselves a life.

If you have this much free time on your hands, why don't you drive through the (formerly) Republican heartlands of Westwood, Cheviot, Delhi, Miami, Green and Colerain Townships and notice all of the Cranley yard signs sprouting up?

It's funny that the Enquirer is now choosing to write such derisive stories about Jean Schmidt. When she was caught and found guilty of lying about her credentials and three different endorsements, what did the Enquirer do? They looked the other way. Even when she was caught sneaking into the St. Patrick’s day parade and her car broke down on Plum St. (which was the funniest occurrence in Ohio political history) your paper did nothing. Though, while this was happening, your paper was busy sabotaging her primary competition with libelous and manipulative reporting.

It must be nice to base your journalistic integrity on convenience. You people at the Enquirer are the reason Jean is still running and why we are stuck with the most bungling and incompetent representative in Ohio history. Thanks to all of you at the Cincinnati Enquirer who made this possible: Ms. Maggie Buchanan, Howard, Kimball, and finally Malia. Thank you.

One more thing, Jim Parker, you never had a chance in the last race and had you pulled off a miracle, Jean would have trounced you. Just because you ran for office doesn’t mean that anyone values your opinion.

Victoria Wulsin is either incredibly ignorant, incredibly hypocritical, or both. First of all, I find it unbelievably arrogant that Wulsin claims none of the constituents of the 2nd congressional district can afford a $36,000 vehicle, this coming from a graduate of Harvard who currently lives in Indian Hill. Secondly, someone needs to inform Victoria that the 2nd congressional district is wider than two square miles, therefore making it pretty implausible that Schmidt could ride a bike to anywhere in the district. If Wulsin is so concerned about the amount of fuel Schmidt’s new SUV will use (or lack thereof...), maybe Vic should stop driving her POS truck around all the time (I hear it’s just GREAT on MPG...) The last thing we need on the hill is another 'do as i say, not as i do' liberal. Victoria should focus more on finding the cure for AIDS (hint: it’s probably not by making the person sicker...) and leave the politics up to someone who knows this district, and the constituents of it.

Here's the real story from a news outlet that's honest enough to call it fake news.

Good news folks, I’m pretty sure you will get a few debates before Jean heads back to DC on September 1. Plan on one in Pike County and the other in Hamilton. Also plan on it being three candidates instead of just two. I’ll elaborate more after 5pm on Monday if need be or you’ll be seeing the various press releases from the campaigns in the next few days.

There are many knowledgeable comments in the
blog as well as reader comments in the "Extra" lead about this Tahoe idiocy. The Tahoe is just a shorter
wheelbase version of the Suburban, the favorite ride of the Secret Service and many country-club conservatives (make that reactionaries...)

The Tahoe is rated at 16mpg city and 20mpg highway.
These are likely optimistic. AND the irony is that the nearest E-85 station is in Dayton! Oh, yeah there's
one in Centerville; thirteen total in all of Ohio. Who does she think she's fooling? This vehicle is a GIFT to the oil industry. But does the Enquirer look into her
outrageous claims? Of course not. If you want a decent newspaper in Ohio, read the Toledo Blade.

The wingnutz who defend this administration and ALL
their puppets, like the rep from OH-2, are simply refusing to deal with reality. May they rest in ignorance.

Cranley is just jealous. He would need a step ladder to get in an SUV.And then have to sit on a phone book to drive...

For someone who should be trying to keep a transmission plant within their district, they sure know how to rub elephant dung in the face of "FORD" ?

If Cranley would need a stepladder to enter a SUV, what must Mean Jean require- an extension ladder?

No, she just climbs right up and gets in.

There is always a pile of elephant dung surrounding the doors.
