Boehner calls on Democrats to pull ads

House Majority Leader John Boehner called on Democrats yesterday to pull a TV ad that shows images of flag-draped caskets of U.S. soldiers, calling the spot “outrageous.”

But his comments comes after Democrats complained in 2004 about a campaign ad from President Bush that showed firefighters carrying a flag-draped coffin from the ruins of the World Trade Center.

Reporters at a news conference yesterday asked him to explain the difference

Boehner: “These were American citizens killed by terrorists. That is a very different policy issue than American soldiers dying on the battlefield protecting the rights and freedoms of American people.”

Reporter: “How so?”

Boehner: “How so? You want me to describe the difference between men and women of the military out there defending the American people, and victims – victims – of terrorist activities? You want to put them both on the same playing field? I don’t’ think so.”

Reporter: “They were both killed by opponents, right? Terrorists or Islamic insurgents?”

Boehner: “We have American men and women who have gone to foreign shores to defend our freedom. They have died and made sacrifices on behalf of the American people and to use those images to rally Democrats and to raise money, I think, is appalling.”

Reporter: “But, really, is that different from what Republicans did with the World Trade Center? They’re still raising money, still the same thing?”

Boehner: “The World Trade Center victims were victims of terrorist act here on our shore and I think all Americans were appalled that this did in fact happen. But I think the difference is, in terms of the images, are as clear as night and day.”

Listen to the news conference for yourself here.

Hey, I have an idea !!

Don't want pictures of draped caskets ??

Don't sit in an air conditioned office after never serving in the military and then sending our kids to die in a trumped up war !!

Your propaganda does not resonate !!

This is our country and you can't scream traitor when we decide how it is governed !!

Your next to go boner !!

These Republicans, including our local yahoo delegation, Goof Doofus, Mean Jean and The Oily Chabothead, will try anything to keep their power this election season.

Democrats just need to pay attention to anything that these Repubs will blame them for, because it is probably their own fault.

It is laughable that R's are attacking Dems on immigration and homeland security when they have had all the power. Republicans never take responsibility.

Hear, hear... Boehner is 100% right in my opinion. Reporter also seemed to cross the line between hard-hitting and badgering. Pretty clear there was a lack of objectivity on her side -- not surprising from the MSM, but always disappointing.

Well, praise the lord. Finally, this website has posted something that gives me hope this site isn't just one more beacon for the Same Old Cincinnati. Slowly, even the moderate voters can see through the thin veil of the sad Bush era. Pure sadness since the 2000 election.

New York Times, 7-15-06 (front page): New House Majority Leader Keeps Old Ties to Lobbyists

Ms. Rulon - The Times article was picked up by the Dayton Daily News. Does the Enquirer intend to run it?

Representative John A. Boehner won the job of House majority leader amid a post-Abramoff clamor for an overhaul of lobbying and ethics rules. But nearly six months later, the changes are still tied up in Congress.

And far from trying to put the brakes on lobbyists and the money they channel into Republican coffers, Mr. Boehner, who has portrayed his ties to Washington lobbyists as something to be proud of, has stepped on the gas.

He has been holding fund-raisers at lobbyists’ offices, flying to political events on corporate planes and staying at a golf resort with a business group that has a direct stake in issues before Congress.

Tapping a rich vein of longstanding relationships with lobbyists and their corporate clients, Mr. Boehner, an Ohio Republican, has raised campaign contributions at a rate of about $10,000 a day since February, surpassing the pace set by former Representative Tom DeLay after he became majority leader in 2002, a review of federal filings shows.

His fund-raising pace is roughly twice what it was before he became majority leader in February; in April his two federal committees took in $334,500 from political action committees, a monthly take that Mr. DeLay did not match for more than two years after the elections in 2002.

Mr. Boehner’s biggest donors include the political action committees of lobbying firms, drug and cigarette makers, banks, health insurers, oil companies and military contractors. Seven American Indian tribes with casinos have contributed $32,000.

And despite an intensified spotlight on Congressional trip taking, Mr. Boehner flew to a golf resort in Boca Raton, Fla., in March for a convention of commodities traders, who have contributed more than $100,000 to his campaigns and are lobbying against a proposed federal tax on futures transactions.

During the trip, Mr. Boehner assured his hosts that Congress would most likely not approve a tax they opposed.

Wouldn't it be great if Boehner and other republicans had been this outraged by soldiers being sent to fight without body armor and without armor on their humvees? For that matter, wouldn't it be nice if Boehner and republicans in Congress were outraged by the fact that American soldiers are coming home in body bags, in general?

Hey, JustMyOpinion.
You'd rather have press that were pussies than prying? One reason we're in a war, getting wiretapped and losing freedoms left and right is people like you think it's OK to treat boneheads like Boehner like kings -- and never ask hard questions. When are you going to Wake Up and realize reporters like Rulon are human, and have the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to question our dictatorial leaders. Would you rather live in a police-state like Syria?????
