Cranley kicks off campaign for 1st District

Democrat John Cranley kicked off his campaign to oust Rep. Steve Chabot from Cincinnati’s 1st Congressional District last night with a message to voters that if they’ve had enough of skyrocketing federal deficits, high gas prices, congressional corruption and one-party rule, they should elect him in November.

"For ever one of those problems, Steve Chabot has been in the middle. He’s become part of the problem in Washington and now we need to vote for change in order to offer solutions," said Cranley, a Cincinnati City Council member from Price Hill.

Gary Lindren, a spokesman for Chabot, R-Westwood, called Cranley’s attacks "empty rhetoric" and pointed out that while Cranley has been on the city council, the number of murders in the city have skyrocketed while taxes have risen and people have continued to move out of downtown.

"People see through the false negative attacks and recognize that Congressman Chabot votes in a manner that is consistent with the interests of the district," Lindgren said.

Cranley’s campaign kick-off rally was held Tuesday evening at the Covedale Theater - a spot Cranley chose because of the work he did as councilman to help keep it open.

"It highlights what I have done and what I can do for people of this district," he said.

Cranley’s gala also featured three former congressmen who represented the 1st District: Tom Luken, Charlie Luken and David Mann, all Democrats who are backing Cranley’s election.

Little Johnny boy is going up to DC and get the other 434 members of Congress to "see the light"?

With no real substantive alternative course of action he blames Chabot for problems affecting all Congressional districts.

While he touts his record of "balanced" budgets, he (as a member of Council) had no choice because by law municipal budgets have to be balanced.

Additionally, the administration puts together the budget and then goes to the Mayor and then to Council. Finance Chair only hosts the meetings and Council's "tinkering" around the edges only represents a very, very, very small portion of the entire budget.

Covedale = Cranley pet project, should we expect more pork barrel politics from him if elected to Congress? I suspect so.

He's never held a real job and is only trying to further his grandstanding by becoming a career politican.

(Off topic, sorry, but this is important and there's no related article to tag onto.)

The Dean just posted a transcript of a speech by a campaign donor describing how he bribed Phil Heimlich.

Chabot sure has loyal staff members willing to blog in their free time.

Chabot has a voting record in Congress that does not mirror the interests of the people of Cincinnati. It's that simple.

Whether people call him corrupt or unhonorable still doesn't get to the heart of the issue: Chabot is super conservative, and Cincinnatians aren't.

This year, Chabot will not be re-elected. It will be close, especially since he will throw millions of dollars at the race, but it will be a win by Cranley.

Chabot voting record in Congress is 90% pro-Bush. Surveys show that the people of Cincinnati are, along with the national average, fed up with Bush. We don't want to be mislead into random wars, we don't want a disastrous economy, and ultimately we don't want a Congressman that ignores his constituency.

That's the sad truth: Chabot ignores Cincinnati.

Chabot votes with Bush almost all of the time. He doesn't believe in pork barrel projects or even keeping his eye out for Cincinnati's federal funding needs.

Chabot ignores Cincinnati. Whether it is out of principle, negligence, or partisan loyalty, he has failed us.

Cranley, on the other hand, is a proven moderate. Cincinnatians know what they will get with him. He is fiscally conservative and believes in good government.

Chabot supports Bush's weak economic programs and supports time consuming, wasteful things like the federal marriage amendment, Clinton's months long impeachment trial, and whatever press releases from the Republican leadership say.

It's that simple. Chabot is no longer a man that can stand by his record. He is no longer a man that can count on electoral support from many parts of Cincinnati.

Why? Because 1) He has proven himself inneffective and out of touch, and 2) Democrats have united behind an electable candidate that has said time and time again that the priority of Cincinnati's Member of Congress should be the PEOPLE of Cincinnati.

That's what a Congressman is for. To represent constituents' views and needs.

Chabot, although an honorable guy that sure has worked his way up in the ranks, has proven that he has lost his touch. He has become super conservative, a very radical rightist, and unresponsive to the needs of Cincinnati.

I hope the Enquirer gives fair and thorough coverage to this race. The people of Cincinnati needs to know what they will get from both candidates.

1-Looks like you Chabot people are scared. You should be.

2-Cranley's attacks are all based on Chabot's record. Chabot has been very busy getting nothing accomplished. Unlike Chabot, you can point to things that Cranley has accomplished like The Covedale Theater and getting 75 more cops on the streets.

3-Why does Chabot have his taxpayer paid staff respond politically all the time? Isn't just wrong for Chabot to run his campaign from his office, if not illegal?

4-Chabot is a joke and always has been. Another reason he gets nothing done for his district is he gets no respect in DC.

5-Cranley is going to send this baffoon home. Chabot might then see what he hasn't been taking care of all these years he's tried to fit in DC-like.

Nice to see Chabot staffers bringing up balanced budgets. As I recall, the Contract with America called for a balanced budget Constitutional amendment. Yet Republicans in Congress and in the White House can't seem to get enough spending out of taxpayers, and Chabot acts as a rubber stamp, while bringing nothing back to his district.

Balanced budgets are one of many broken promises made by Chabot and Congressional Republicans. Chabot signed his name to a term limits pledge, yet here he is, lying again, and hanging around to keep looking out for his new multi-millionaire buddies.

Chabot's the career politician. If he were honest and really cared about the First District, he would honor his term limits pledge and step aside. Chabot votes the way Abramoff, Delay, and Bush want, not the way the First District needs.

What has chabot done for our community, district ?

He seems to be nothing but a rubber stamping wRong wing nut.

Why am I, all of a sudden, getting tax paid flyers regarding some kind of town meeting ?

Isn't it a little late for him to try and do something for our community when he will soon be leaving office due to his pledge of six years and out ?

I just don't get this guy. Can he not be trusted to tell the truth ?

Someone explain, please.

Is this what one would call a flip-flop inside a three ring Chabot-Delay-Bush circus.

anon 7:15,

Right on. The Contract with America is only one pledge Chabot has reneged on. How about his pledge with Ney years back to NEVER unoffically campaign from inside his DC Cannon HOB office?

Chabot doesn't know who he is. He really doesn't.

We need a Congressman that knows who he is now so that he doesn't go to DC and turn into a partisan politician that doesnt get anything accomplished.

Word.

Cranley's campaign is based on the idea that if you tell a lie enough times maybe people will start to believe it. He knows Chabot never took a term limits pledge. But Chabot did vote for term limits -- over and over again -- only to see the Democrats vote 'no" and block them from passing. Cranley knows that he can never match Chabot's fiscal responsibility so he just call him a big spender and hopes people will buy the lie. Anyone that has ever spent time with John Cranley knows that he is all about one thing: John Cranley.

Uh, hey, Ann, don't mean to bring up grade school civics, but Congress doesn't repair potholes in Cincinnati; the City of Cincinnati does. That means you can blame road conditions on Little Johnny Drinksalot.

Hey, Cranley volunteers, when listed off Cranley's impressive accomplishments like the Covedale Theater (oooooohhh, very impressive), don't forget he helped keep Club Ritz open as well. Other than that, what else has the kid done??? Other than flip off the mayor and lose contol of a law committee hearing which led to a riot. That is the type of leadership this community and country needs: murder, riots, and finger gestures.

Yep, and term limits, yet another Chabot broken promise. What's his slogan, "Working hard for working people?" Hmm. Tax breaks for billionaires, cuts in student loans, no increase in minimum wage--yep, he's really working for us.

WHy can't the Democrats come up with any real ideas?

Instead, they just use variations of "I Hate Bush"!!!

Why have these Democrats allowed themselves to be led to Hate by the Tiny Pied Piper of Vermont?

Howard Dean has lowered the standards of the Democrat Party: they have become a cult of hate and envy, all energies are directed towards hating Bush.

This is a serious mental problem shared by millions of Americans, this brainwashing is real and it's evidence can be found even in this local race.

Democrats used to stand up for the black man, but now we're as racist as those Republicans.

Why are the Democrat Leaders so eager to get rid of Rep William Jefferson, are we going to be abondoning this man like he was only an Iraqi?

William Jefferson was born in this country. He worked up from nothing to become a respected and loved Congressman for Louisiana. Now Pelosi wants to throw him over the boat.

First they make our Rep Cynthia McKinney apologise to the Capitol Police officer, and now this!!

The Democrat Party is just as racist as those Republicans. In fact, they exploit the black man even more than the Republicans.

I am happy that Cranley might be going to congress.

We need people in Congress that will stand up for gay rights, abortion and global warming.

I heard Cranley was going to work to bring e-Check back to Ohio to help stop global warming. Cranley's our man.

Francis Harris is really concerned about African Americans, isn't she?

Or is she just another right wing shill trying to stir up racial discord for Ken Taftwell?

Taftwell has done everything in his power to suppress black Ohioans voting rights, from closing polling stations to refusing voter registrations for outrageous reasons to refusing to count hundreds of thousands of votes, largely from poor and minority dominate areas. It is clear that Blackwell has subverted our democracy in Ohio, which makes his guilty of treason. He should be put prison for the next 20 years for his high crimes against America.

The republicans always have room for a few uncle toms that they can use to their own ends, all the uncle tom has to do is be willing to turn his or her back on every law this nation has enacted over the past 50 years that benefits the African American community.

And as for "susan clearfield", who is probably the same right wing wacko, if you want to talk about hate, how about we discuss Ann Coulter's disgusting and reprehensible comments this week where she calls 9/11 widows ‘harpies’ ‘witches’ and then makes the truly revolting quote “I have never seen people enjoying their husbands’ death so much.”? The right wing is filled with bigots and hate mongers, how ironic because they are also the fundamentalist bible thumpers. We call that hypocrisy.

Corrupting a religion and using it to justify hate, bigotry and even murder isn't the sole domain of the radical Islamic fundamentalists, the right wing wackos of the American Christianist Taliban uses the same tactics.

Anon 8:23,

Cranley doesn't support abortion rights. He's as anti-choice as Chabot. One of the many reasons, I'm sitting this one out.

Er, Mister Meeker, when someone spells a name as "Francis," it usually means the person is a man. "Frances" is the normal spelling for a woman.

You learned to spell Taftwell (or are you just copying Democrat talking points and passing them off as your own, as so many illiterate libs like to do here), so there is maybe some hope for you.

Make sure your vote will be cast and counted in this race.

While Hamilton County enjoys a good reputation for Board of Elections (BOE) performance there were 530-some votes lost in '04 by voters who voted at the wrong table. Some voters were directed to the back of yet another line to try again. Some voters were improperly given a provisional ballot which did not count. Some, of course, could not wait and left without voting.

We need precincts better marked (in this case the particular table) and poll workers better trained on the correct use of provisional ballots.

Everyone needs to check their registration in the statewide voter registration database, well ahead of the October cutoff for registration. If your name does not show up check with your local BOE.

Whichever candidate you support democracy depends on your vote counting.

Someone left a wRong wing nut loose !

This isn't about your bush, sue son.

This is about chabothead who rubberstamps the wRong wing nut agenda.

The wRong wing nuts want to claim the voters don't have any plans, but, they can't say one thing that cha-bothead has done for the middle class in this community since he has done nothing, period.

The democratic plan is simple. Rid our government from the culture of corruption and return our country to the people by the people. Not screw the people by the corporate interest.

How about that life long dedication to your favored corporation for that retirement contract with American only to have it up in smoke by wRong wing nut leaders at enron, delta, united, worldcom, etc.

Got the picture !

Sine you are so easily influenced by brainwashing repeat after me:

Vote Cranley, Vote Cranley, Vote Cranley.

Cranley and Chabot... Boy, now there's a choice...

In answer to somebody's question about why Democrats can't come up with any original ideas... Some of the can... They just can't seem to win primaries.

Remember Jim Parker? He had nothing but ideas and they all made sense without raising taxes. He would have sent Jean Schmidt right back to Clermont County.

Chabot just voted against net neutrality and for corporations such as Verizon, Comcast, AT&T. Here's a link to the roll call vote.

Let's really consider the facts and then let the informed voters decide.

How could anyone not vote for John Cranley? Since being a leader on City Council in the majority party, he's revitalized downtown Cincinnati, decreased crime, dramatically lowered the murder rate, brought the Banks to Cincinnati, worked with the County to build a new jail, repaired race relations, avoided fire brownouts and prevented any police slowdowns. And he's pro-life!

Cincinnati is now one of the best cities in the country. Thanks to John Cranley's fine leadership. John Cranley for Congress!

Chabot voted to give over $14 Billion to oil and gas companies. Chabot voted for a special interest energy bill that gave $14.6 Billion in corporate welfare and tax breaks to gas and oil companies enjoying record profits. Chabot’s vote for the special interest energy bill did nothing to provide short-term or long-term relief at the pump for American families who are paying for record gas prices. (H.R. 6, Vote #445, 7/28/055)

Cincinnati Democrats seem to be afraid of going out to meet the folks in the suburbs!
