Bob McEwen's letter to the Enquirer editor

Bob McEwen, who hopes to unseat Rep. Jean Schmidt Tuesday, sent this letter to Enquirer editor Tom Callinan on Friday.

April 28, 2006

Mr. Tom Callinan
Editor, Cincinnati Enquirer
312 Elm Street
Cincinnati, Ohio 45202

Dear Mr. Callinan:

Less than 24 hours after being reprimanded by the Ohio Elections Commission for a “reckless disregard for the truth” Congresswoman Jean Schmidt repeated those same falsehoods in a massive media blitz. Just days after pledging to the Cincinnati Enquirer editorial board not to mention her opponent by name, she took advantage of the weekend to make claims we know are untrue. Previously, the seven counties of Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District were represented with distinction by Rob Portman

One of her many false claims is that I personally wrote bad checks. This was a broad attempt by the House Democrat leadership seeking to cover up its poor management of the House Bank more than a decade ago. Many members, myself included, demanded a full accounting of the House Bank, a special prosecutor was appointed, a complete audit was made, and the vast majority of us were given what the press called “letters of exoneration.” Coincidentally, my good friends Jack Kemp, Dick Cheney and I received our letters of exoneration on the same day. This is a truth of which Jean Schmidt has full knowledge and she publicly spoke of it when the exoneration was initially made. The letter itself is readily available at
www.bobmcewenforcongress.com. Jean Schmidt further seeks to distract attention from her harmful voting record in support of the massive new taxes and fee increases which caused Ohio to sink to 47th in new job creation and carry the third-heaviest state and local tax burden among the 50 states. She creates this distraction by distributing photographs of a property Liz and I own near Washington DC. She then repeats the charge concerning our residency, a charge which was dismissed by the Ohio Elections Commission on Thursday.

It has been my privilege to serve among the leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives representing the state of Ohio. My legislation expanded the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which was necessary for Comair and Delta to use as a hub; built the Appalachian Highway, opening up southern Ohio to commerce and hope; built the water system so necessary for Clermont County to prosper, so significant that the Clermont County Commissioners have named it the Bob McEwen Water Treatment Plant. My votes in support of lower taxes and greater economic growth are very much needed at this point in time for our state. With a son in the Marines, I understand the challenging times we face and I care deeply that our district’s voice is heard with respect in Washington. Jean Schmidt and I will face the voters on Tuesday. I eagerly await their judgment.

Sincerely, Bob McEwen

The OEC dismissal was on the fact that the McEwen attack piece was misleading, not that he illegally voted.

It specifically mentioned 1995 and 1999 when Mr. McEwen did not even bother to vote, legally or otherwise. So as far as disregard for the truth, I think those in glass houses...

But who cares, because I'm sure everyone that reads this blog has already made up their mind anyways.

bob: name of the author of the last book you 'read' is Doris Kearns Goodwin, not Helen Goodwin Kearns. good try though.

Ben Dover is a certified knucklehead. And Ben how about answering this question: if folks like you are so sure he illegally voted why have you not pressed that point in the courts and to the OEC? Your statement infers Big Bob illegally voted but then acknowledges that was not brought before the OEC or courts. Why not?
You and Jean may have good qualities but your public non stop crying about stupid points just shows how dense you are!

Liar Schmidt keeps saying that the lies on her degree were something she just became aware of when they were on her website in the last primary election. THAT IS A BLATANT LIE!!!

Her claims of two degrees go back more than TEN YEARS and appeared in the Clermont Sun Newspaper.

Watch this video to see the proof:

http://24.106.249.116/pathological.wmv

She just lied about it again on WLW radio. She can't stop lying and we cannot afford to have this type of person in Washington.

Vote Bob McEwen and restore the pride.

She stated she had two degrees in the November 2, 1989 issue of the Clermont Sun Newspaper. The lie goes further back than the website Jean. Your lies also appear in the Ohio House yearbook from when you were in the Ohio House. You gave them that false information Jean - not someone else. How can you continue to lie in the face of everyone in the Ohio Second Congressional District. You also said you did the coursework, but just did not apply for the degree. Another lie Mrs. Schmidt. According to the people at UC, you are more than 40 hours away from that degree. Stop the countless lies.

What the heck is wrong with the Enquirer that this information is out there, easily verified, and yet you hide this important information from the readers? Now that I know this, I am seriously going to consider canceling my subscription because I don't know if I am ever going to get objective stories with all information from both sides. Stop protecting the liar.

The details you refer to, including listing two degrees in the Ohio House directory have been reported by the Enquirer, either here or in the paper.
Check the archives.

Hmmm... I wonder if the Enquirer senses the shifting momentum and is trying, too little too late as it may be, to hedge its bets?

Hey, didn't Jean Schmidt sign a pledge in front of the Enquirer editorial where she pledged she would not mention Bob McEwen in her campaign material and commercials? I just saw her nasty commercial where it mentioned Bob.

Wow, not only is Jean Schmidt a complusive liar, but her word is not worth the paper it is written. No character, no truth, that's Jean Schmidt.

I hope McEwen gets elected so we can put an end to this laughing stock in Congress. BTW, Schmidt, you're not by Congressperson. I live in the district but I ashamed of you and the lies you stand by.

Doesn't Jean Schmidt know the difference between overdraft protection and a bounced check?

You seen Jean, a bounced check is when you write a check and the bank does not cover it because you do not have the funds, and so it goes back to the depositor, hence bounced.

Overdraft protection is when you do not have the funds in your bank account, but the bank knows your good for it and you will be depositing money soon to cover it, so they pay the depositor.

Congress had free overdraft protection. No checks were returned. My God, if you don't know the simple operation of the banking system, how can we ever trust you with our money.

Looks like we cannot.

Why didn't you call their democratic opponents for their take? Oh yeah, this is a Republican rag.

After listening to the debate today, I was struck by Jean Schmidt's decision to continue lying about her degree.

As someone has already stated, there is a video out there showing the Clermont Sun newspaper article from November 2nd, 1989 - long before the internet web site "typo."

She has a problem. God help us if she wins tomorrow, as the Democrats will not be as kind as Bob McEwen has been.

Here we go again Cincinnati ---- shifting the ownership and responsibility.

I just received a flyer from the Cincinnati Police Department in title CHRONIC NUISANCE PREMISES ORDINANCE TRAINING “Landlord Information for Multi-family Dwellings”. The base of the flyer is property owners will be billed and even give Civil & Criminal Citations for actions and behaviors for what happen near, around and in their properties. This flyer is being masked under Cincinnati Municipal Code Chapter 761. It states property owners are costing the taxpayers money when police calls are placed for crimes or service are near their properties. I’m sorry but as I’m looking at my property tax bills that are due January 31, it’s the property owners that are paying the bills for the city (a city that over 70% of the city live in rental properties).

As a business and property owner I’m finished and seeking to sale all Cincinnati owned property and businesses --- moving a somewhere else that is open for business and property ownership.

Please see the flyer……

No Longer What to Pay for the City
