Win-Win for Willkes

If pro-life voters in the 2nd Congressional District are looking to John and Barbara Willke, the patriarch and matriarch of the right-to-life movement, for guidance on who to vote for in the May 2 GOP primary, they're on their own.

The Willkes like both candidates.

Tuesday, the North College Hill couple whose activism sparked the right-to-life movement nationally over 30 years ago, were among the crowd who showed up at the Eastgate Holiday Inn for Rep. Jean Schmidt's $150-a-plate fundraising lunch.

Exactly one week before, the Willkes were front and center at the Queen City Club, where Schmidt's primary opponent, Bob McEwen, was having a fundraising breakfast.

Just too old pols working both sides of the street? Guess again.

"We like both of them,'' said Mrs. Willke said. "We really can't lose in this race.''

Schmidt is the immediate past president of Cincinnati Right To Life, the organization the Willkes founded in 1971; and McEwen has solid anti-abortion credentials dating back to his days in Congress in the Reagan years.

The Schmidt-McEwen race, John Willke said, is a race between "a feisty advocate for life and an experienced congressman with a good record. It's win-win for us.''

Was Leslie Ghiz at that "pro-life" gathering as well?

Will the Willkes stand by the resume-padder Schmidt?

Can any teachers on here explain how her story might have been true?

At which school did Jean teach? If her resume is a lie, what else is? Did she teach home room, study hall or bus stop?

Geez, talk about the Peter Principle.

Big deal! There are several more important issues in political races than abortion; like war, unwanted children, poverty, environment, debt (which has increased to $9 trillion under W from $6 trillion - a 50% increase in 5+ years)ect ect. I am so sick of all the bickering about this one issue from both sides. Why don't they address the real issue - like how to prevent unwanted pregnancies? Just pushing abstinence only programs is not practical and just plain stupid. And why don't these big pro lifers ever tell us about how are we as a society going to handle many more unwanted children? Why don't they tell us about all the improvements and funding available for adoption agencies and foster care agencies? Of course they may be challenge by the fact that there are over 3000 kids waiting for adoption right now in Ohio and over 110,000 nationwide. Yeah - lets vote for only the pro lifers in and they can ensure we make abortion illegal but worry about the consequences and planning for alot more unwanted children later. Sounds like the Iraq debacle - rush in to eliminate the big threat and do not plan for the consequences like sectarian strife and insurgents; oh yeah Iraq will welcome us, the big oil revenues will pay for everything and as we all know the insurgency is in it's last throes.

The Enquirer is very quick to print Schmidt’s rhetoric (GCRTL president for less than a month) without challenge it, but have yet to print how she LIED about her education. BTW, if a contractor ever lied regarding her level of education on an application for a taxpayer funded contract, she could be charged with felony fraud.

LYING to your constituents on your resume for a job they elected you to do is the same thing. Schmidt LIED, now she should be charged and a judge should decide her fate.

It must be really difficult for the Enquirer to admit when their wrong about a previously endorsed candidate who turns out to be the embarrassment for not just the district, but the region.

It seems to me from reading several posts that the left is really crazy about lying. Not sure if any of this is true about Schmidt, but where was their outrage when the world knew that a President lied UNDER OATH. They say that was just about sex, but for years the left had pushed there was no such thing as just sex when it was in the workplace and was between two people of very different power positions. The great sexual harrassment issue that cost businesses billions of dollars went away with their desire to support their abortion president. They are sick of hearing about the issue unless they are denied their ability to kill babies in the womb. If they are sick of the issue, why did we see all the big uproar when we had conservative judges appointed and the abortion issue was brought front and center?
