Reds Opener: Who's going?

As you all know by now, President Bush is throwing out the first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds home opener next week, and Sen. Mike DeWine said yesterday that he had already planned to attend.

So who else is going?

Sen. Jim Bunning would be a good bet, especially considering that the the Southgate, Ky., Republican is himself a former Major League pitcher and baseball Hall of Famer. When asked today, Bunning said he plans to meet Bush at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport - and attend the game! It was uncertain, however, if he'd be giving the president some pitching tips.

What about U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman, who lives in Terrace Park and represented Greater Cincinnati in Congress for the past 12 years?

You bet!

Here's what Portman told a group of Cincinnati business leaders at lunch today:

"Last weekend I was in Mexico, this weekend I’ll be in Brazil, until Sunday afternoon, making it home in time for Opening Day where I will be joining our president to watch him throw out the first pitch, better than I did last year, by the way."

With the country at war... With jobs evaporating into China... With 46 million (1 out of every 6) people who live in America without health insurance... With gas at $2.50+ per gallon... With everything that is happening to the middle class and the baby boom generation... HOW DO THESE GUYS HAVE TIME TO GO TO A BASEBALL GAME?

I've been working 19 - 20 hours per day between my job and my US Congressional campaign... The White House has completely lost touch with everyday Americans.

Washington needs somebody like me who will never stop fighting for the children and families of Southern Ohio. At least that's what lots of people have been telling me.

There is a candidate's forum tomorrow night (Thursday, March 30th at 7:00 pm) at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley Square.

If anybody who lives in Clermont, Hamilton or Warren Counties is looking for something to do Thursday night, that will be the place. I guarantee it... I heard that John Cranley might attend.

Bob or Jean, if you show up, I promise that I won't try to debate you. Obviously you can't even arrange that amongst yourselves...

Jim Parker, MBA/MHA
Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District - 2006

Has Anybody Figured Out why 15 is the MOST IMPORTANT Number in America?

Uh, Jim, McEwen is ready to debate Schmidt anywhere, anytime. I am glad to see, though, that you are for the most part taking your eye off them and are trying to focus on beating your Democratic competition first.

The fact that you are implying that McEwen is inept is telling. I guess you are starting to percieve him as the front runner.

Is 15 the most important number in America because 15 new Democratic Representatives in the House and 15 fewer Republican representatives will alter the balance of power there, giving a Democratic majority in the House? I'm for that, and a return to balanced government.

Parker, get a life old boy.

I wish that either Malia or Howard would report on real stories in Cincinnati, like Jean Schmidt lying about having two degrees. Why are they keeping this story from the citizens of Southern Ohio. It is irresponsible; every hour this story remains concealed they squandering the validity they hold with readers.
Jean Schmidt was elected upon a certain list of criterion and when it is discovered that segments of that criterion have been falsified it is deemed unworthy for the Enquirer News. This is a shameful situation which has befallen the Enquirer News team. Malia Rulon and Howard Wilkenson have betrayed every tenant valued by respectable journalists. In many eyes, what has been broken cannot redily go back together.

I have a great life but not everybody is so fortunate as me. Come on out to the event tonight and you will see what I mean...

Jim Parker

We can only wonder if silly Jim Parker will bring some of his magic beans!

Jim - Ignore the name-calling. I appreciate your posts here.

And Howard Wilkinson's previous article making fun of the bean jar was a cheap shot and only reflects how far this former fine columnist has fallen.

Mr. Wilkinson, if you're reading this, what happened to you? What happened to your column, which I used to always look forward to?

You used to use your power as a journalist to go after the guys in power. Why did you make fun of Jim Parker, who is simply trying creative ways to let his voice be heard above the political din? This kind of reporting says more about you than about him.

The real Edward Murrow would realize that Jean Schmidt taught in Clermont County and in order to do so requires a teaching certificate. A certificate that she recieved from the University of Cincinnati. Jean is not saying she has a degree in secondary education. Now maybe you can tell me why a hag like the carpetbagger would be better, and Mr. Parker, I'm sorry but Deborah Kraus has a better chance than you, mostly cause of her (R).

Will the last idiot in Clermont County who believes that Mean Jean is a person with a shred of intergrity please turn out the lights?

I HATE GEORGE BUSH AND WILL BOO HIM WHEN THROWS OUT THE FIRST PITCH!

Bring your own baseballs painted red for blood and throw them onto the field.

Anyone who boos George Bush at opening day should be beaten with a baseball bat like the hippies they are. I will stand and applaud him.

I am a senior citizen - too old to even have been a hippie. I would stand and boo GWB long and loud, and the boos would drown out the applause. However, I would not accept free tickets to be in stadium at the same time as GWB. Too bad he was invited - it will color my feelings about the Reds all season.

You are sad old man. I am sickened by the baby-butchering liberals, but I would still go to a free game where Bill Clinton was going to pitch. You make me hate the current state of America.

IJPC is organizing a massive leafletting from 12-1pm. We need at least 50
people wearing signs that we'll provide. The signs will have a yellow ribbon
and say SUPPORT THE TROOPS - BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW. To ensure a
consistent, clear message we ask that leafletters wear our prepared signs.
Our goal will be to distribute 5,000 pieces of literature. We will be
meeting to hand out signs and leaflets at Garfield PLace as close to Vine St
as we can get at 11:30am.
If you are interested in being a part of the action, please email me at

Anon 9:37,

I was there. Parker's bean stunt was just as ridiculous as Howard said it was. Actually, Howard was being generous. Ask magic jack.

GOT A PROBLEM WITH CAPS TOUGH GUY? THE FACT IS THAT GWB IS THE WORST PRESIDENT THE UNITED STATES HAS EVER HAD AND I WILL MAKE HIS VISIT TO GAB THE WORST! IMPEACH BUSH!

Sure ya will buddy. Sure ya will.
Any liberal jerks that try to hand me any anti-Bush or anti-war leaflets will be greated with a hardy punch in the face.

Lot of hate and anger out there in the Bush/war-lovers, including physical threats of beating with a baseball bat and a "hardy" (shouldn't that be "hearty") punch in the face. I'm sure the Secret Service would look the other way, but hint to Bush protesters- be careful of what your tee-shirt or sign says or you might be forcibly removed. - They're famous for that. Hint #2- have video cameras etc. ready to record security excesses. Can't imagine security will allow projectiles- baseballs- anywhere near our cheerleader-in-chief.

I will be at the game and rise up to applaud the President of the USA. I hope that those who try to disrupt the event because of their hatred will be escorted out of the stadium. I understand that there will be a lot of ushers and police ready to escort folks out. I will also applaud their exit.

This is opening day for the Reds which is an event that has held special meaning to a lot of fans for a lot of years. It is an honor to the city to have our President, of either party, come into town to throw out the first pitch. If you want to protest, stay away. Stay away from all the reds games because the new owner backs this President 100% with his invitation and his money.
