Voinovich: Censure bill “irresponsible” waste of time

Sure, crowds of Republicans have lined up to blast Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., for his bill to censure President Bush for authorizing a warrantless wiretap surveillance program, which Feingold says is illegal.

But Sen. George Voinovich didn’t go on a tirade about it. In fact, the Ohio Republican seemed quite a bit annoyed by the whole issue.

“I have a great deal of respect for Russ Feingold … but I think on this one, he’s way off in the boonies someplace, ” Voinovich said. “I’m not going to challenge his motivation, but Russ wants to be the … most liberal candidate the Democrats have running for president. He wants to stake out the area that (former presidential candidate Rep. Dennis) Kucinich did. And that’s what he’s doing. And I think he’s wrong. ”

Asked if Republicans see an opportunity with the Feingold bill to score a few political points of their own by blasting it, Voinovich took a long pause.

“This place,” he said, glancing around at the Senate office building where he sat eating breakfast with eight reporters. “We’re wasting a hell of a lot of time on something that we shouldn’t even be around. We’ve got enough other problems besides this going here. These sideshows, they get in the way of the big 10.”

So does he want to see a floor vote on the censure proposal?

“Really? No. I think that our people would like to see a floor vote on this because they think that they’re right. I haven’t seen any polls, but I’m sure it doesn’t poll very well. So there we are. There’s the Democrats … talking about censuring the president. It’s irresponsible, especially when the prestige of our president has a great deal to do with his influence in the world.”

Really? So it’s “irresponsible” to censure the president during a war?

“Yeah, particularly if you can say that the reason for it has more to do with politics than substance. I haven’t talked to Russ about this. He may sincerely believe this and it’s got nothing to do with politics, but I think that most people think that it does.”

But if Republicans force a vote on the censure bill next week, aren’t they also playing politics?

“They want to play politics too. But, you know, someone gives you a scalpel and says cut my throat, and you want to keep the Senate, you’ll take advantage of it. He’d have been smart not to do it.”

So, at what hour did this officially become the George Voinovich blog?

So, at what hour did this officially become the George Voinovich blog?

Can you spell "R-U-L-O-N?"

But Malia's got a way to go to top Carl Weiser's breathless minute-by-minute of the Bush fundraising visit last month. That remains the high water mark for Republican brown-nosing on this blog!

The real question to ask is who or how are we going to come to a final determination if these wiretaps or intercepts without warrants are legal? If the courts(I suppose they are the ones to make the ultimate determination if this was legal or illegal under existing law)determine it was legal then obviously no censure or anything else is necessary. If it is determined to be illegal than W must be held accountable as any President or invidual must be held accountable to our laws. With that said, this censure issue is coming up too early. I for one do not understand how getting a warrant 72 hours after the intercepts have started would put an undue burden or hinder the process. And if there was any question about the legality of doing something why didn't W check the issue out with an independent source and not just members of his administration who have a strong tendency to act like sheep and go along with just about anything W wants. But of course we want to catch the bad dudes and send them away for good or better yet send them to the devil. This whole process must have some oversight and my opinion is that the FISA law was designed to be this oversight. If W thought the FISA law was too restrictive (even with the 72 hour rule) then he should have gone to Congress to have it changed before doing these intercepts.

Oh, thanks for setting us straight, George. Illegal spying on Americans isn't the problem. The real problem is "liberal" Russ Feingold who wants to hold our government and criminal commander in chief accountable.

And he's "out in the boonies" on this one, huh, George? Seems to me that's where we might also find your ethics and your sense of responsibility to your constituents.

Irresponsible to challenge the president in a democracy... now that's just sad.

Censure is a slap on the wrist for a lying and law-breaking president. They should go for the full impeachment-- that is after all what happens to Presidents who break the law, right?

I find it amazing how our (R)wrong wing fishwrap can be so well balance with the news reporting ?

Our community has been begging for Voinovich to enlighten us.

If georgy porgy was doing his job, he would have started the questioning.

Instead he wants to play the un-American traitor card.

It is much more important, to this country, if our leader received the treatment in the oral office than it is for Americans to receive the loss of liberty treatment.

Are they for real ?

How pathetic. This is why the (R)wrong wing nuts are so worried. Their thoughts defy logic.

Voinovich sounds like he's full of "Schmidt"

( if bush is going to listen to my phone conversations, I think it only fair that he pay half of my phone sex bill - David Letterman )

Hey Andy - what are you talking about? Do you really think that if warrants were issued for these intercepts that W and his administration would not tell the public that? What kind of strategy is that - well we did get the warrants but we do not want to tell anybody because we love getting beat up by the Dems, the public and even Republicans. Your comment is not food for thought but rather crap for the dumpster.

GWB is a war criminal who should tried for crimes against humanity, and the republicans who support him are equally as guilty of war crimes as he is

Mulon Rulon:

Why don't you talk about some real news like the judicial nomination of a local bag man and companion of deters the coin dealer cheater ?

Judicial Appointment of a Money Launderer ?

I oppose the nomination of Michael Barrett to the Federal bench as he was chairman of the Ohio Hamilton County Republican Party when they were found to have been laundering campaign contributions to a state treasurer's campaign.

He had to have been right in the middle of this scam.

The news article is below.

Andy Mandy;

What a sad pathetic individual you are !

The constitution grants its citizen certain liberties. One of which is the freedom of speech. The courts have further held that citizens have the right to speak anonymous.

We know you don't appreciate liberties as you try to rationalize abuse.

Not only are you pathetic, but, you are also a hypocrite !

Why don't you use your full name Andy Mandy ?

Your profile lacks credibility !

Your neighbors know what a wrong wing nut you are, but, please enlighten us on your full contact information. When we are all shopping for different housing we can avoid your deranged turf.

If you are trying to display a non-partisan side, we certainly don't see it.

A group of terrorist attacked military targets in this country. ( The twin towers housed CIA operations )

The citizens did not attack themselves, nor did they incite the attacks by expressing their displeasure with failed leadership.

Keep making an A-s of yourself.

We all know, your full of "Schmidt".

Andy ?

When you are trying to accuse someone of being dumb and dumber, you will want to spell check:

Independent

ads

It is a good thing they don't make voters pass a spelling test !

( lol,lol,lol,lol,lol )

Adds ?

Does one guy minus spelling skills make him a zero ?

It was amazing to watch the Democrats crawling all over each other to get away from this nut job. This was big Russ's play at trying to get far left of Hilary to try and win over the nut case crowd.

It was interesting to see the testimony today of five fromer FISA judges say that they did not believe what Bush did is any way against the law.

Cannot wait for the democratic primary season which should start right after the 06 election. It will be interesting to see them run far left and off the cliff from which there was no return for Kerry. Especially to the ability today to bring back comments made over time on the same subject.
