Cranley's not-so-secret plan

Last night, John Cranley, the Democratic candidate in the 1st Congressional District, detailed his plan for how he is going to accomplish what no Democrat (including himself, in 2000) has been able to do in the last six congressional elections - defeat Steve Chabot.

Cranley showed up in Clifton Wednesday night at a meeting of Democracy for Cincinnati, a group of about 20 activists who supported Howard Dean for president two years ago. He argued he could win - using the John Kerry-George Bush contest of 2004 as evidence.

In the last presidential race, Cranley said, the 1st District gave Bush the lowest winning percentage of any congressional district in Ohio held by a Republican. Bush edged Kerry in the 1st District by only 3,441 votes out of about 300,000 cast. If it hadn't been for the fact that the sparsely populated portion of Butler County that is in the 1st District went four-to-one for Bush, Kerry would have won the district because the Democrat edged out Bush in Hamilton County, which is where most of the votes are.

That, Cranley figures, shows great discontent in the 1st District with the way the Republicans are running the White House and Capitol Hill.

"When some people think about the 1st District, they think of Green Township, and, granted that's a very Republican place, with lots of voters,'' said Cranley.

But, he said, the district has a 27.5% minority population and the bulk of the city of Cincinnati's poor inner-city neighborhoods, which are chock full of Democratic votes for the politician who can get them out to the polls.

Plus, Cranley said, he is every bit the West Side boy that Chabot is; and the fact that he was the top vote-getter in last fall's Cincinnati City Council election, with substantial support in west side neighborhoods, shows that he can compete with Chabot toe-to-toe, he said.

"Green Township has gone 80 percent for Chabot in most elections,'' Cranley said. "But I was born in Green Township. I still have a lot of family in Green Township. If I can cut him down to 60-40 - I'd like to win it, of course - and pick up votes in Colerain and Delhi, I know I can win.''

"I'm not saying it is going to be easy. But it can be done.''

The Honorable Steve Chabot will not be Cranley's opponent for long. Good luck to Cranley trying to beat who's coming.

Chabot will keep his term limit promise and step down real soon.

Cranley's new foe will be far tougher to beat than Chabot.

this plan makes a lot of sense. no wonder chabot is showing his face around a little bit more. cranley can really win.

what has Chabot ever done for the inner-city neighborhoods?

Cranley's got one thing right -- it won't be easy. Still, Chabot has been very absentee. It could work.

I'm sick of this Chabot term limit stuff.

The Contract With America only promised to bring forth term limit legislation. Chabot did that and voted for term limits. He voted for term limits every chance he had. Just because he votes for term limits does not mean he "pledged" to self-impose them.

o.k., so Steve Chabot will only talk-the-talk on term limits, but not walk-the-walk? typical Chabot.

Chabot's a "do as I say, not as I do" Republican. Same goes for ethics, where he's taken $100,000 in free trips, yet claims to support ethics reform in Washington. Chabot loves to say one thing in the district and another in DC. Chabot's gone Washington, and it's time to get rid of him.

We all know what John "DeWine" Cranley can do to win this race. He should run on his record. With all the great things he's done to make Cincinnati a safe, vibrant, wonderful place to live, who could beat our boy?

I hope Cranley does run on his record, god knows its better than anything Steve "Abromoff" Chabot has done for the district. Cranley has worked closely with west side leaders to stem the rising crime in that part of the city. Steve "The Original Office Hopper" Chabot is a do nothing career polititian who continues to get elected based on some sort of west side fetish with comb-overs. He has continually left the 1st district blowing in the wind. Cranley has recent experience dealing with west side issues, and if nothing else west siders will support someone who supports them. Their support will go to Cranley.

Keep dreaming John-Boy.

Remember, Cranley was in cahoots with Alicia Reese. Cranley betrayed the police and the anti-crime people of Cincinnati when he was the deciding vote to open the 13th St.exit blockade. This had proven to be a good way to reduce the drug trade. Cranley's sellout to Alicia and Blitherman tells me he is a pandering opportunist that I will never trust to do the right thing.

The 13th street blockade was a great way to get people to drive around the corner where the cops were pretending nothing was going on. The blockade stopped nothing.

Don't let the facts get in your way anon. Where to start, how about with council document 200509849, which shows that Cranley voted against removing the 13th street blockade. In fact he was one of the most vocal supporters of leaving the street closed off.

Second, you are right that Cranley worked with Alicia and the Police Department to come up with a way to get more cops on the street. Its amazing what can happen when you put fighting crime before personal animosity.

Anyway, last time I checked Cranley's program to put more cops on the street was greatly supported by every Westside organization and the Police. Chabot may have read about it in the newspaper while he was taking all those trips from Lobbyists and the money from Abromoff.

The Presiential numbers in this Congressional district are deceiving. Steve Chabot has outperformed EVERY Republican running for President in his district. There are LOTS of cross-over blue collar voters, Reagan Democrats, on the west side that recognize that Steve Chabot is a tax & spending hawk that opposes corporate welfare and bucks his party on this issue. People understand that Steve's real conservatism doesn't always sit well with Republican party bosses and that he is true to his district.

For these reasons, Steve Chabot will win this district in relatively easy fashion.

John Cranley has no business being in the U.S. Congress as he has NO real life experience.

Steve "Abromoff" Chabot may have been able to claim he was a spending hawk back when got into office, but being a career polititian in washington has revealed his true nature. All those trips and money from lobbyists and interest groups make it much easier for Stevie to vote for increased in spending that have run of the deficit at the highest rates in two decades.

Its hard to claim you oppose corporate welfare when you vote for $140 Billion (yes thats right, BILLION) in corporate subsidies for his lobbyist buddies.

Stevie is out of touch with the district. He has been an absentee representative at a time when crime has shot up within his district.

By contrast John Cranley has worked with Westside groups and the police to put more cops on the street and stem the rising crime. Chabot's lack of interest in his district's issues will sound his death knell.
