Mayor talks crime at UC

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory's on-going dialog about crime -- specifically how to reduce the amount of violent crime in the city -- continued Monday night when he met with about 35 people at the University of Cincinnati.

The group included professional facilitators from UC's Criminology Department, provided free of charge by the university.

Invitees included Hamilton County Coroner O'dell Owens; Cincinnati Police Chief Thomas Streicher and Cincinnati Fire Department Chief Robert Wright; Juvenile Court Judge Thomas Lipps; Cincinnati Public Schools Superintendent Rosa Blackwell; along with members of the clergy, Urban League and the city's solicitor's office.

Mallory said Owens and Streicher made a presentations about patterns they see in homicide cases, then the group broke into three groups for discussion. The meeting was closed to the media.

"Last night’s meeting was about getting people to analyze the barriers that keeps them from making progress in fighting crime," Mallory said. "Basically, it came down to what changes we need to make to decrease crime in general; how to deal with prvelance of guns and gun violence."

Mallory unveiled a portion of his plan to fight violent crime Jan. 19. Among the ideas:

--Police taking a renewed focus on busting mid-level drug dealers, who supply drugs to street corner dealers.

--Asking the U.S. Attorney's Office to accept more cases.

--Police and schools cooperating on truency sweeps.

--Combining the vice and drug enforcement units for better coordination.

--Pleading with citizens to report crime they see.

If Mayor Mallory cared about crime, why won't he recognize the threat posed by the CityLink proposal. CityLink wants to bring a mega-mall for the homeless next to 3 schools in his old neighborhood in the West End. This huge mall will be a magnet for substance abusers, people with mental problems and bring down a neighborhood struggling to improve.
The CityLink idea could bring bussloads of afflicted from all over the tristate to an area that is least equiped to handle it. The police are against CityLink, but they have been told to keep their opposition quiet. All the local churches, schools and local agencies also think CityLink is a bad idea.

The truency "sweep" at the library was a one shot PR joke. The next week the TV crews found the same kids hanging around during a school day. The Mayor worked at the library for almost 10 years. He knows all those kids play hookie there with no consequences. Sweeping them up one day only played to the cameras.....Do something meaningful and sustainable. Don't pander with these meaningless PR stunts!

You want citizens to report crimes?
I saw Dale Mallory's pal Junebug menacing and threatening West End
Community Council members that voiced any opposition to CityLink.

The truancy sweep was a one shot joke. I went by there twice before noon and about 50 school age kids were right out there, laughing and harassing.

Re: Library sweep... The mayor knew truants hang at the library so he sent the camaras there. I would do the same thing. It makes a difference now because there are people in office now that care whether or not the kids are in school... him and the new cinti pub boss.
