Portman backs Schmidt for re-election

With another GOP primary battle underway for his old congressional seat, Rob Portman made it clear that he's staying out of the fray.

The U.S. trade representative, whose resignation last year propelled 11 Republicans to vie for his seat, told the Enquirer that he's backing Rep. Jean Schmdit of Miami Township.

"My position is going to be the administration position, which is to support the incumbent," Portman said in an interview after President Bush's State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Schmidt beat out former Rep. Bob McEwen and Ohio state Rep. Tom Brinkman to get her party's nomination last year. She then beat Democrat Paul Hackett, an Indian Hill lawyer and Iraq war veteran, in August to claim the seat.

McEwen announced earlier this month that he'll again challenge Schmidt for the seat.

In December, before McEwen's entry to the race, Portman, a Terrace Park Republican, had headlined a fundraiser breakfast for Schmidt in Cincinnati.

Wow. Portman should get an award for Least Enthusiastic Endorsement of the Year.

With the McEwen campaign broke and falling apart he would accept any endorsement. So far he list old endorsements hoping nobody files an ehtics challenge.

How can Portman not endorse Jean, for Rob to get his trade initiatives passed through congress he needs all the House support he can muster.

As a long time Portman supporter, it is difficult to see the integrity of his former office deteriorate. Rob would never have allowed the Batavia Ford plant to close. What did Jean do? She was probably off hiding from the press because her latest embarrassment or plotting with Barry Bennett about her impending primary loss. 1800 people will be without work because of Jean’s uncaring and terse personality. Thank you Rob for sending us the most unconcerned, capricious and indifferent representative this district has ever had the displeasure of knowing.

What nit wit thinks that Portman would have saved Ford or that it is Schmidt's fault that the Batavia plant is being closed. They are closing a lot of plants all over the country because they are not able to make any money. The plant closing was in the works while Portman was still in office. The schools knew the rumor over a year ago. Next you will want to blame her for the weather. Grow up and get a life. Your buddy McEwen will be back as an ethically challenged Washington DC lobbyist soon.

The fact is that Jean didn’t even make a public statement about 1800 hardworking 2nd District citizens losing their jobs. All the coffee and conversations in the world cannot make up for her startling lack of initiative and indifferent disposition. Any responsible representative would have done anything necessary to keep those people employed and that Ford plant open. Offering Federal or State incentives, anything that may have provided Ford with a reason to reevaluate the closure. Whether her effort would have made a difference is irrelevant, what is relevant is that Jean saw the situation and did nothing. Her apathy is deafening. She doesn’t care about the communities of Southern Ohio; all she cares about is her reelection and the color of Hamid Karsai’s upholstery.

Furthermore, I am not going to blame her for the weather; it has been unusually pleasant this winter and I’m not going to give her that credit.

I don't really know what to say about this endorsement...

I would never simply endorse anything or anyone simply because the "administration position" is to "endorse the incumbent".

I do believe that we would have heard more from Rob Portman about the terrible economic situation in Batavia than we have heard from Jean Schmidt. Last night, on my way home from Cincinnati, I spoke with a man who does contract electrical work for Ford at another location. He explained that the workers with the least seniority where he has been working are the most concerned because they are in danger of being bumped from the most senior people from Batavia.
We spoke for quite some time on my way home to see my wife and kids. He is just one of thousands of people from Southern Ohio who live in the real world and experience real problems everyday in their lives... THESE ARE THE PEOPLE OF SOUTHERN OHIO...

This economic travesty in Batavia is a symptom of so many things that are wrong with our economy. The cost of healthcare is hurting every family and business in America. The President proposed Healthcare Savings Accounts as the solution to America's healthcare problems... I'm sorry, but I disagree with the administration's position. We need real solutions. Rhetoric is hollow. Political speeches from Washington do nothing to solve the problems of the people of Southern Ohio. I have made proposals to save Medicare for the baby boomers. I have made proposals to require the oil companies of America to share in the cost of alternative energy research. They made record high profits while you were being charged record high prices for a gallon of gas... It's only right.

I do believe that Rob Portman would have done more for the workers at the Batavia transmission plant... I know that I would have... I am sorry to hear that he has chosen to endorse Jean Schmidt. And I am surprised...
