'Furious' Ghiz seeks employee attendance inquiry

Republican Councilwoman Leslie Ghiz is calling for City Council to hold public hearings on attendance by city employees after disclosures that a city employee kept a $40,000-a-year job while not working for nine years.

In a press statement headlined "Furious Ghiz Calls for Inquiry into City Hall Staffing," Ghiz said she is "determined to get to the bottom of this issue."

"We have over 1,600 vacant positions that we fund city-wide," Ghiz said in the statement. "This is a position that was not reported as vacant. It is clear we need an overhaul of our personnel practices."

"It is shocking to think that through difficult financial years, we were paying a former employee not to work," Ghiz said. "This lack of management oversight will stop immediately."

Ghiz, who worked in the city's Human Resources Department and was the city's chief labor negotiator before quitting to run for council in 2003, said she would call for a Finance Committee hearing in January.

Nice work Leslie! We need council members like this to uncover corrupt spending and wasted money. The government taked plently of our money in taxes and always wants more. We should be looking for inefficiences just like this.
Ghiz, I really really like you!!!

Way to go Leslie! While you're at it, take a good, hard look at the "Human Services/Social Services" budget. I want to know just who is delivering services & who is freeloading off the taxpayers. Leslie, get rid of the redundancy & make sure these agencies are serving everyone, not just a select few. Also, make certain there's a balance in overall diversity. Leslie, we'll see you in January & you will have plenty of support!

Meanwhile, get that no-load off the payroll. Bill Gustavson was right - she's sitting on her fat tuckus watching trash TV, on our dime!

Go Ghiz Go!

Great job Leslie. Someone has to take responsbility for something - Mallory won't.

Great Job Leslie. Someone has to step up and take responsability - Mallory is not.

Great job! I'm impressed by Ghiz's leadership on this issue. She's a really take charge kind of council member. I'm glad I voted for her.

The only thing more fawning (and obviously planted) than Pepperbots are the Ghizmos....

One of the worst displays of grandstanding and showmanship I've seen in a long time!

Just how long has Ghizzy been away from City Hall? How long has this employee been paid to stay at home? Do the math.

Go Ghiz! She is turning up the heat on the administration, which should have been done years ago. Here's to saving us some money!

Talk about saying us money !

How about Ghiz keeping her campaign promise and reduce her salary to:

$ 30,000

Well, what is her salary now?

Go Ghiz! Keep that campaign promise. It is only a part time job anyway. We thank you for saving us money and keeping your word.

Ms. Ghiz was the labor negotiator and an attorney in the Human Resources department when this employee was suing the City. She was still working in HR when the verdict was reached. She worked in HR for several yeasrs while this "employee" was not only getting a check at home but was attending free college classes, getting to sell back sick time and utilize all of the benefits of being a City employee. Only now when the press is watching does she take the time to be astounded by the situation.

Anon, Ms. Ghiz has not worked for the city for over 3 years so how was she to know that this person was still on the payroll?

Anon 12/24 @ 4:50 is exactly right!

Looks like Leslie slept through her years in HR, which seems to coincide with the same period of time that this City employee was allegedly loafing on the job.

Actually Nate, Leslie was there while the emplyoee was suing the city but was not there after the settlement was reached. The settlement called for this employee to be placed in another position, which never happened. So clearly, Leslie had no way of tracking this.
