You can't read everything you believe in the paper

State Sen. Mark Mallory listens to Councilman David Pepper answer a question at Tuesday's mayoral debate on WCET. (Photo by Tony Tribble/The Cincinnati Enquirer)

At one point in Tuesday's Cincinnati mayoral debate on WCET, Councilman David Pepper criticized state Sen. Mark Mallory's failure to lay out detailed plans, and accused him of changing positions on key subjects.
PEPPER: "Just today I read that my opponent wants to abolish the city manager system, have an executive mayor. I hadn't seen that before. With a week to go, that's an issue in the campaign. You have to lay out exactly what you're going to do if you want to change the city."

MALLORY: "Thank you very much. First of all, let me address something that my opponent said, and you're probably not aware of this but the information that was in The Cincinnati Enquirer this morning on my position regarding the city manager was not correct. We're not certain -- I've talked to the Enquirer, we're not certain where the error occurred, but let me be real clear: I am not in support of changing the city manager form of government, and will not support any effort to do so. I have been very clear, on record, that the mayor of Cincinnati has quite enough legislative power to get the job done. The issue is about leadership. So ignore anything you've heard here today, if you please...."

PEPPER: "I guess you can't read everything you believe in the paper." (The audience laughs at his malapropism.) "That's probably a good lesson, though. I almost fell out of my chair when I read that in the paper this morning as well."
So what happened? The Enquirer accurately reported Mallory's answer to a written candidate questionnaire:
Should Cincinnati adopt an executive mayor system, abolishing the position of city manager?

Yes. It would lead to more direct accountability.

Mallory's answer appeared -- along with those of his six primary opponents -- in a chart published Sept. 11.

The Enquirer asked new questions of the finalists on Oct. 11, and gave each campaign the opportunity to modify their answers to the old questions. Neither campaign asked to change their answers, which were published again in a Tuesday election guide. Just before the Tuesday debate, Mallory told the Enquirer that his published answer was inaccurate.

"Every now and then, a campaign makes a mistake," Mallory said, surmising that someone on his staff cut-and-pasted the answer to a different question posed on another questionnaire. "We made one here. ... The only thing I want to change about city government is to make it work."

But Pepper tried to attach a greater significance to the gaffe. "You can't keep passing the buck on these major questions facing our city," he said. "You can't build consensus if your message is screwed up."

Mallory really seems to be losing it. He supports the mayor taking over the schools, but as soon as he realizes what a mistake it is, he abandons it. Then he supports getting rid of the city manager, but writes it off as a mistake when he realizes that people don't like the idea. I can't believe anyone is willing to vote for this guy. No one (including him or his staff apparently) has any idea what he plans to do as mayor. Whether you like Pepper or not, at least we know what he is going to do. The thought of Mallory as Mayor terrifies me.

David, David, David everyone is tired of you. Talk about the issues, forget about trying to slam Mallory. It will not work. Mallory was here a long time before you. Mallory has done a lot more for this community than being a "Dan Hurly" stealth Republican. You will not get any cooperation from council if you stay on the path you're on. Mallory receives more respect from his little finger than you can get from your whole citizen camera spy committee.

I think you have earned a:

crying towel.

Are you kidding me? David "I didn't break the law, it was my staff's fault" Pepper is accusing somebody of passing the buck?! That's ridiculous.

I think the Enquirer has pointed out a blatant error from the Mallory camp. He pretended to have have been misquoted by the paper, but when presented with the evidence that he answered the question exactly the way they reported, he backtracked and blamed a staffer for a "mistake". Mallory was caught in a lie. This has nothing to do with Pepper.

There is a huge difference between not using the word "for" in your ad and blatantly misleading voters about what your real agenda is once you get into office. That is probably giving Mallory too much credit though because it assumes that he actually has an agenda.

The whole Mallory family is an asset to this community. Marks brother, Judge Mallory, even gives the Republicans a fair shake in court, which is more than we can say for some judges. Some Judges have such little respect for the community that they will be habitually late for court and make defendants, victims, police officers wait and then try to blame it on that dirty old adulterant.

Is David Pepper responsible for giving over $100,000 to La Shawn Pettus-Brown?

Is he responsible for giving $60,000 to the Know Theatre/Gabriel's Corner after they produced a play portraing Jesus as a sinning homosexual and drunk?

Is David responsible for the chaos at City Hall because he promised in 2001 to fix the problem and chaired the Rules Committee?

Is David responsible for giving a convicted drug trafficker a $50,000 consultant contract to recruit and advise young people?

at 3:04 PM, November 02, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've heard those rumors as well.

And why doesn't David Pepper talk about his plan to oust the City Manager and have the Mayor assume those powers?

Why doesn't David talk about his plan to give the mayor power to unilaterally grant no-bid contracts to big businesses without Council's consent?

Why doesn't David talk about his illegal plan to have the City's economic development director answer to him instead of the City Manager?

Why doesn't David talk about his desire to rule City Council with an iron fist and strip any non-puppet of power?

Why doesn't David discuss his disdain for members of Council who understand that they are ELECTED by the people to represent the people's interest, not APPOINTED by the Mayor to do his bidding and embrace his disasterous agenda?

Yeah, David learned a lot during his visits to Russia, San Francisco, and Chicago. And people wonder where David shaped his political values.

Poor Nate, the cry-baby blogger & not-so-secret Mallory family operative, is taking Mark Mallory's plummeting campaign hard.

"The Consensus Builder" has self destructed in the last several weeks, e.g. BlackFist-gate, "...bust you up" on Da Buzz, John Kerry flip-flopping and bad performances with Enquirer & Post editorial staffs).

The white, liberal battleground is now being won by David Pepper. Game, set and match.

P.S. A recent survey of local lawyers reveals that Bill Mallory Jr. is the most underqualified, unobjective and least respected of the Hamilton Co. judges.

Boy, they are just like their evangelistic leader "Pat Robinson" when confronted, they will lie.

You may have been told lie's when you thought you were that special chose one and you probably don't know more than you are suppose to.

The individual judge who won the award for lacking integrity and diligence goes to the non wedding ring wearer, Convicted "Taft" appointed name that has disgraced the courthouse.

Why doesn't Greg Korte report on David Pepper's flip flopping on the issue of executive mayor.

On June 8, 2005, David Pepper supported a change from the Council-Manager form of government to an executive mayor form.

According to the chart published in the Sept. 11 edition of the Enquirer, David said he opposed the change.

The mainstream white media won't tell the truth about David's flip flopping. Thank God for bloggers and new media.

Seconded. Pepper's flip-flopping is on the record. Mallory explained the gaffe. Now when will they hold Pepper to the fire, too?

pardon me, i ommited one other explanation for the campaign free-fall of the "consensus builder" (11-2, 3:42 pm): associations with lunatic racists & disturbed, race-baiting bloggers (we all know who this is!).

mark, it's the company you keep!

at 6:03 PM, November 02, 2005 Blogger Nathaniel Livingston Jr. said...

Yeah, but Pepper hasn't laid out exactly what he would do with regard to changing the system of government.

I know this is hard for you Pepper puppets to understand but David said he supported executive mayor in June, then he told the Enquirer he was against executive mayor in September. That's a flip-flop.

You Pepper puppets say David is still for executive mayor, but he told the Charter Committee a few days ago (when he was trying to get their endorsement) that he was against executive mayor. Another flip-flop.

Where is David's position on executive mayor? Does he support it or oppose it? And what will his position be after the election?

Pepper is dead in the Westbank water. I can't wait to see the tear in his eys at 11:00 PM Nov. 8, 2005 as he concedes. Mayor elect Mallory, I wish you well and promise not to be a divider anymore.

He can use the same crying towel Mallory handed him when he promised he would denounce all mean things about Crybaby "Pepper" if he will just email Mallory before 10 AM because Mallory has a city to change ! Crybaby "Pepper" is lucky that he is not received like "Kerry", only instead of "Flip, Flops" it would be a

crying towel with chants of:

And why hasn't the Enquirer gave the public an update on the "clawbacks" David says he inserted into Convergys' $52 Million package? Where are the jobs? Where are the clawbacks? Ah, but that would be too much like responsible journalism, now wouldn't it?

at 6:14 PM, November 02, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, it would. They are to busy trying to keep that P&G advertising "Buck".

Well, "Nate" may not be the most diplomatic guy in the county, but, he has Very, Very, Valid Points. Anyone who doesn't listen reveals their closed character. Now, you have demonstrated your "Hate" characteristics and your willingness tp follow the "Republican" agenda of "Shoot the Messenger." If your not responsible for "Outing th CIA" then little you must be from "Pepper's" campaign.

Nate Livingston is a very bright and intelligent man. People should listen to what this man has to say.

at 6:46 PM, November 03, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, they should listen to the valid points. I do think he has a bright future once he becomes "polished".

Even H Rath Brown (sp?) became an accomplished politician.

Once, Nate, settles down and stays on point, he is a pleasure to dialog with.

I agree with Pepper on one thing, "You can't believe everything you read in the paper". You defintely can't believe what you read in the enquirer. I am sure that is what Pepper meant to say.
