Kathy King vs. Pat DeWine

Kathy King, a Republican is challenging Republican Commissioner Pat DeWine for the Common Pleas Judge seat being vacated by Judge David Davis. Here's what Kathy has to say about herself and her opponent:

Kathy King vs. Pat DeWine
1)Kathy King has been an attorney for 33 years.
2)She was a trial attorney for her first 8 years as an attorney in various capacities. She tried over 50 jury trials and hundreds of bench trials. DeWine had never tried a jury trial as of 1-17-08. We don’t know how many, if any, bench trials he has conducted himself. During a portion of that time, Kathy King was the Acting Director of the Clinical Program at Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University and taught law students how to try cases in court.
3)When Kathy King practiced law, she practiced mostly in Hamilton County, but has appeared in court in Kentucky and Michigan, as well.
4)Kathy King has practiced in Municipal Court and The Court of Common Pleas. She has written briefs for and argued cases in The First District Court of Appeals, The Supreme Court of Ohio and the Federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Kathy King has also written several briefs for The Supreme Court of The United States, although she has never actually appeared in that court.
5)For the past 25 years Kathy King has been a judicial officer, serving as a magistrate in The Common Pleas Court, Domestic Division.
6)Kathy King is 61 years old. She and her husband, Jim King, have been married for 40 years. They have three grown children. Ryan, age 35, graduated from St. Louis University. Justin, age 33, graduated from Xavier University. Nolan, age 21, is in his senior year at Wheeling Jesuit University.
7)Kathy King is a life-long Republican who, as an adult, has never run for a political office or a judgeship. She decided to run only after reading in the Enquirer that Pat DeWine was entering the race.
8)Some may say that Kathy King is running against Pat DeWine. Kathy King believes that Pat DeWine is running against her. King filed on 1-4-08 at 12:14. DeWine filed at 1:07.

"She decided to run only after reading in the Enquirer that Pat DeWine was entering the race."

Vs.

"Some may say that Kathy King is running against Pat DeWine..."

uhhh...wtf? you state you decided to run because DeWine was running, then turn around and say DeWine is actually running against YOU...

I'm no fan of Pat DeWine, but Kathy King is an abrasive nutjob.

On paper King sounds good. If this post was a reproduction of her work, then she exhibits a lack of maturity needed in a judge.

King needs to lose the pettiness in her arguments. Seriously 12:14 vs. 1:04? And she presents the time argument after saying that she decided to run AFTER she heard that Pat was running?

Experience may be one thing, but maturity is another, and DeWine seems to have developed that over the years.

After all, it takes character to take a tough position against a tax proposal in the face of overwhelming pressure. It doesn't take much character to be petty in the manner King demonstrates.

I would strongly support a candidate in this race who has judicial experience, practicing knowledge of the law and is not thrown into a position because the political party wants to find a home for that person.

In this case I would endorse Kathy King and encourage others to do so.

Pat Dewine is a carpetbagger who'd never have been elected locally if not for his famous father. Kathy King is the real deal.

I really used to hate appearing in front of Mag. King in DR court -- she could be abrasive. That said: she knew what she was doing, she moved her docket and she was fair. I am a lifelong Dem, I would prefer neither Repub be on the bench -- but I'd vote for her early and often. She won't embarass herself, the party (if you care about that) nor will she disgrace the bench.

Does this mean if Kathy King wins Pat DeWine would have to find a job? Or would he just run for another Government job that he is not qualified for. Pat DeWine do the citizens of Hamilton County a favor, go into the private sector.

I'll sort this out when it's time to vote. Granted, I'm registered Democrat, but it'll be a frosty day before I'll vote for Norma Holt Davis. I enjoyed how she attempted to hoodwink the Green Twp. voters with her signs in an effort to take votes from Bernie Bouchard, who thoroughly trounced her broad beam.

Word to the wise - those voters for Holt Davis need to check her credentials thoroughly. This was the individual who agreed to head up the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission & backed out at the last second without a credible excuse. Holt Davis needs to wake up - Timbo Burke is using her as a sock puppet.

at 8:44 PM, January 22, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Holt Davis is not Judge David P. Davis...but we can be sure the Dems thought that the voters would be confused, and vote for her. She may be capable and perhaps we should vote for her... What are her past legal accomplishments? How many criminal cases has she tried? How many civil cases has she tried? WHERE DOES SHE PRACTICE? Since DeWine has no experience , this should not be too hard to answer.

Republicans are tired of the Dewines and Heimlichs of the world. Kathy King will defeat puh-puh-Pat Dewine and then Pat will finally be off the public teat.

Want another difference? Kathy King didn't cheat on her spouse like that slimeball Dewine.

She decided to run only after reading in the Enquirer that Pat DeWine was entering the race.

This is not elementary school. You don't run for public office because someone else is running, you run because you think you've got what it takes.

Kathy King believes that Pat DeWine is running against her. King filed on 1-4-08 at 12:14. DeWine filed at 1:07.

Is she 6 years old? She may be an old woman, but there's no question she lacks the maturity and temperment to be an effective judge.

OMG!!! I think DeWhiner just lost his bid for a seat on the bench.

There is no way the electorate, as informed and bright as they have been lately, is going to support DeWhine's "it's all about me" agenda.

Congrats King - your first judicial decision sets a wonderful precedent for the (NEW)Republican Party - credibility, skill, experience, integrity, and class!!!!!!

If Republicans follow this creed -they may save the party in Hamilton County - and what's more, save their corrupt reputations for absolute demise.

Good job!

DeWhine - I think you lost your way somewhere - go back to "Jail", don't collect $200.

let's see--25 years as magistrate vs. one term as a county commissioner. And good grief, she may even have a sense of humor (who filed first). It is a no-brainer. She's got my vote.

This is Kathy King. I was in Federal Court this morning for something unrelated to work. This is my first post of the day and I will always identify myself when I post. I encourage others to do the same, but can understand your reluctance if you choose not to identify yourself. I will be in court this afternoon.

Thank you all your support. My following comments may actually lose votes for me, but I cannot help but speak my mind. Maybe it is part of my so-called abrasive nature.

I do not believe that personal attacks are helpful. Nor do I believe that it is in the best interests of our community or the children in our community to discuss publicly the private lives of adults. Children are very computer literate. They google themselves and they google their parents. Let us all be respectful to one another to the best of our abilities.

Kathy, your efforts to discuss Pat DeWine's personal life, under the guise of condemning such a discussion, is outrageous behavior on your part. The only value it shows is your inability to bring anything of substance to this race. Pat DeWine has been talking about issues, not your personal life, and you need to do the same if you want to be taken seriously.

As a life-long Republican I feel that I should vote for the "endorsed" Party canidate. That would be Pat DeWine for Judge. His election committe includes all the big names and Big money...Carl Linder, Joe Deters, ect. etc. etc. I respect these folks, but I am confused. What kind of prosecutor doesn't want a new jail?? How can Carl Linder support a canidate with no experience who is opposed to a new jail? What did DeWine do about crime while at City Hall? What did he do about crime while on the Commisson Well, he joined hands with loose-cannon Smitherman to oppose a new jail. He is simply "Anti-Everything". Anti is easy---solutions are not. Soon we will be releasing criminals back to the streets, and his solution seems to be "Bail out and hide in a Judgeship". Dosen't he determine budget requests for the Courts? Assuming he wins (and he will)... isn't he determining his own budget? I hope someone can answer these questions-because I can't and many of my old friends depend on my opinion on election day. Please good Republicans, help me out. Thanks.

Has Pat DeWhine been talking about issues? What are they? I always thought Judges were not allowed to talk about issues or their opinions about anything. How refreshing!

at 8:49 PM, January 23, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are lots of smoke screens in this blog. The issue is very simple: which candidate has the experience and temperment to be a good judge? One blogger who hated appearing in her courtroom says she was fair. If she's fair, and she's experienced, then by all means buck the party establishment and elect Kathy King.

As a life long republican, almost all of them in Hamilton County, what has the Republican Party done in the past ten years besides drive people to Northern Kentucky, Indiana, and outlying counties? We, as republicans, need to wake up. What has Pat Dewine done? Anonymous who thinks Kathy King's fingers are getting tired please tell me and maybe I'll see your side of things. More than anything I don't like Dewine and don't think he's deserving of any elected position, especially a judge!

2:22 AM, January 23, 2008

You hit the nail on the head. Paying to play............

DeWine didn't do squat as the county commissioner so the Republican Party decides the same person who failed as the county commissioner, with almost ZERO judicial experience, would make a good judge????? Something doesn't add up. One of the many reasons Hamilton County is where it is.

What has Pat Dewine ever done in his entire existence on this planet that would qualify him for Common Pleas judge?

Kathy King has many years of experience as a magistrate. Dewine has experience running losing campaigns. It's time to 'retire' Pat just like we 'retired' Mike Dewine. I'm voting for Kathy King!

I've been watching this blog for two days now, and even chimed in once because I favor a candidate with experience and fairness. What I find intriguing is the Dewine supporters in this blog are reduced to calling Kathy King an "outrageous nutjob;" "old woman;" "immature; and "outrageous." I guess when you don't anything positive to say about your own candidate, you throw mud at the other one. It is unfortunate that the Republican Party managed to intervene in such a clear-cut case. It would have been much wiser to let the two candidates convince the voters. As it is, they've handed Kathy King a rock solid issue. It's time to get back to the fundamental issue: which candidate has the experience and understanding that would make a good judge. Elect Kathy King.

at 8:19 PM, January 26, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

The job of a Common Pleas General Division judgeship that DeWine & King are seeking requires a broad knowledge of several aspects of the law. The largest percentage of a Judge's docket are matters of a civil nature, over 70% of the assigned cases, as a matter of fact. This is the area of law that DeWine has worked in for the past twelve years. King, on the other hand, has worked in family court, where she is not required to have any current knowledge of these issues. Additionally her knowledge of criminal law is 25 years old. As anyone who practices criminal law knows, that base of knowledge is way too outdated.
I like the thought of having a civil litigator on the bench, it will be refreshing. Good luck DeWine

at 8:58 AM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

True, the Common Pleas Court has a significant number of Civil Cases filed and docketed. A closer look will tell you that a great number of these cases are settled by an experienced Judge or the are sent to a Visiting Judge for jury trial. Some are tried by elected Common Pleas Judges...if they can work them in between mandatory criminal trails. Most of the Judge's time is consummed by Criminal motions, Jury trials, and Criminal Bench trials. That being said, I would agree that both Civil and Criminal experience are of utmost import. Actual trial experience is the key. How many Civil or Criminal jury trials has Mr DeWine personally tried in any Court? Has Mr. DeWine ever served as Lead Atty. in any Civil or Criminal case? If so...where and when? Let's drop all the "ad hominen" piffle and get on with the real issue: To Elect The Most Experienced Trial Jurist!

at 11:39 AM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Take a look at Presiding Judge Nadel's official website: "Criminal cases are typically set Monday through Thursday in the morning. Civil motions are set on Friday mornings....At some point, most civil cases will be referred to arbitration and/or mediation." So, let's assume that Mr. DeWine has any experience in Civil cases... When would he possibly use it?

at 12:10 PM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kathy King is the only candidate in my opinion. While Pat DeWine sits on his hands and gets nothing accomplished, Kathy gets results! She is kind, intelligent and passionate about her job. She CARES about people! She has the experience and expertise to make an excellent judge. Her credentials speak for themselves. Why the republican party refuses to back her is a mystery to me... but I am backing her! And I'm going to tell all of my friends to back her. Let's get Hamilton County on the right track and elect someone worthy of the position. Best of luck, Kathy!

at 2:40 PM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kathy gets results? What results? With all due respect 99.999% of people can't name a single thing that she has ever acomplished.

I also find it hilarious that people on here bash DeWine for living off "the publi teat" for 8 years and in the very next breath express their support for a woman who has been a government employee for TWENTY-FIVE YEARS.

P.S. - Portune stated publicly the other day at a Democrat Party meeting that he's going to spend a lot of time and money supporting the Dem. candidate for this office in the fall. Republicans might want to think about supporting someone who has actual election and campaign experience.

at 8:19 PM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I want a judge on the bench, not election and campaign experience. KK's got my vote.

at 9:34 PM, January 27, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Welcome DeWhiners! I find it hilarious too. But this is not a matter of public service. This is a matter of Judicial competence, period. Try to focus, and please dump the 99.999% B.S. Why can't you answer the basic questions?
P.S. Of course Portune wants DeWhiner out. Hello? Split the Repug. vote and get another Dem. on the bench. That's all good, but let the most qualified win. Bush has actual election and campaign experience... do you want him to be a Judge too?

at 12:54 PM, January 29, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pat Dewine is a shifty-eyed, low-class politician. He doesn't deserve to be on the bench.

Consider Kathy King's experience and sterling character when voting for Common Pleas judge. Let's retire Pat Dewine just like we 'retired' his dad Mike Dewine [RINO, Ohio]!

at 7:44 PM, January 29, 2008 Anonymous Anonymous said...

The reason people are bashing DeWine is because he has the money and the name. He hasn’t earned anything. It's been handed to him. He's had plenty of opportunities to show the people of Hamilton County what he can do. Again, what has he done? I have yet to hear anything on this blog pointing out anything positive he's accomplished.

Kathy has been a government employee for 25 years and your point is what? That she cares about her community? That she thinks she can actually make a difference? That she wanted to take advantage of the government hours to spend time raising her children? I’m sure she could have pursued a career outside the “government teat” and made a lot more money doing it.

First DeWine was elected to the City Council. Then he decides to run for County Commission. After six months he decides to jump to the next level and run for Congress in the special election. DeWine raised far more money than his rivals in this campaign and still finished a pathetic 4th. Now the Republican Party decides it would be a good idea to get him out of his seat on the Hamilton County Commission to run for Common Pleas Judge. Give me the 25 years of judicial experience any day of the week.

Just because 99.999% of the people can't name a single thing Kathy King has accomplished doesn't mean she hasn't accomplished anything. That's absolutely absurd! 99.999% of people can't name a single thing Howard Schultz has done either, and they buy his Starbucks coffee on a daily basis. She is not a public figure………yet.

I’ll ask again. DeWine has been a public figure for 8 years. What has he done?

I am Nolan King, Kathy King's 21 year old son at Wheeling Jesuit University. First of all, how is being a government employee for 25 years a bad thing? It shows she is loyal. It shows her dedication and pureness as a person. She did everything she could to make sure I grew up to become responsible, genuine, caring and loyal. I am very glad she has spent such a long time as a government employee and think everyone should be happy with it as well. All three of her children are responsible, genuine, caring and loyal.

My mom is, by far, the nicest and most caring person I have met throughout my life. She has had a positive impact on every person she has ever come in contact with. It would be comforting to me, and I hope everyone, that such a genuine person is the Judge of Hamilton County. I do not know anything about Dewine except what people have said on this blog, so I can not say he would be a good or bad Judge. However, I can say and want to say that my mom, Kathy King, is as good of a candidate for Judge as you can get.

What I am going to do and would love for every supporter of my mom to do, is get her known. Dewine has support from the party. So what? That is not going to be changed. Instead of talking about it negatively, let's do something about it. Every person that has ever met my mom knows she is a great person and would be a great Judge. If everyone in Hamilton County knew her, she would receive at least 90 percent of votes. So please, help our county and our city by getting her name out there. Lets keep people in Cincinnati, not drive them out. Elect Kathy King. Do everything in your power to get her elected. Lets make Cincinnati a great place to live. I guarantee everyone will be more than satisfied with the decision to elect her in the long run.

Good luck Mom!

I would like to see Mr. Dewines credentials. I think that if he is qualified to run his credentials should be discussed here. I ask for his supporters to discuss his qualifications. Please, no more petty jabs. Yes, he has the Republican nomination. Mrs King is a Republican too. I do not think that the voters simply vote the "ticket" vs. track record.

I just discovered that Kathy King is running against Pat DeWine this weekend. All I can say is "GO, KATHY, GO!!!!!!!!!!" I am tired of people who were not born and/or raised in the Greater Cincinati area telling us what is good for us. Pat DeWine, you are one of these persons. Kathy King is one of "us". She is trying to break the Republican Party's mold of backing name recognition only persons for office. This is my main grip with the Hamilton County Republican Party. There are a lot of very qualified court officals/employees who will never get the chance to run for Judge because the local party will not back them. Kathy is trying to break this pattern and I hope she succeeds.

It is good to see someone standing up to the Republican party and running on their merit. Unfortunately, the Party has, for several years, been giving judicial seats (and other offices) to whoever provides the most financial support to them, either personally or through family or backers. It has become routine for judgeships to go to the highest bidder and everyone at the courthouse knows this but is afraid to say so.

One good thing about Pat DeWine and two bad:

1. He voted against including abortion in health benefits for city employees when he was a city councilman.

2. As of June 2005, he was still in favor of this horrible war in Iraq (Cincinnati Enquirer 6/12/2005).

3. In addition to this alleged sex scandal, the real scandal is that he willing to be swayed by big business to give away our tax dollars to sway them to come to Cincinnati.

A candidate for judge like Dewine, a career politician with no (zero, zip, nadda) jury trial experience, will cost taxpayers dearly after his cases are turned over on appeal. No fiscal conservative should vote for inexperience in a courtroom, unless of course you're the County Prosecutor who favors lemmings in black robes. Does anyone else find it suspect that the Prosecutor is supporting a candidate for judge? That doesn't pass the smell test. A vote for Kathy King is a vote for experience...and she won't have to repay political "favors" to the Prosecutor down the road! Do your homework before you vote. kathyking2008.org.

I just receieved a phone message from Bill Cunningham supporting Kathy King for Judge over Pat DeWine. Granted, Cunningham has issues, but no one argues that he's in the know when it comes to inside politics. If a highly informed politico like Cunningham supports Kathy King, then she's got my vote. I also checked out her website kathyking2008.org and Cunningham's message is on the home page if anyone would like to hear it.

I'm not sure what office Pat DeWine is running for...He voices opinions on policy matters as if he were running still for Congress. Judicial candidates are supposed to be impartial so they can hear cases fairly; his style leaves him open to challenges by attorneys on cases that he may face. He keeps his Friends of Pat Dewine open (where's that money going--can't go to judicial candidate). I'd rather take my chances with a seasoned magistrate who knows what the groundrules are.

I clearly have no idea where this situation is today but I can say there is no way in the world that anyone should elect King for this position. I have appeared before her numerous times in DR court and she is NOT someone who is fair. She's very disrespectful to innocent people that are having a hell of a time with a divorce/custody issues, not to mention their ex-spouse. She's always on a MAJOR ego trip. She plays favorites with attorneys and makes her decisions based on whether she likes that attorney or not... not to mention that she doesn't even let you explain anything. She's very unprofessional and is pro fathers rights to a father who has no business even being around his child. I honestly cannot see how she had even been given this position. My goal in life has always been to report her to the attorney general once my case wouldn't have to go to her. She has treated me like a criminal and has treated me like a bad parent when I am not even close to either. This would be a bad choice to have as a judge. Dog walker maybe...er wait, I wouldn't even let her walk my dog.
