Jeffre: Pot Law "Draconian"

Council Candidate Justin Jeffre meets with Todd Portune, Joins NAACP on Steps of the Courthouse

Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune met this afternoon with Justin Jeffre and other members of the Southwest Ohio Green Party, attempting to gain the support of progressives for his nearly billion dollar jail proposal.

"I appreciate Commissioner Portune taking time to sit down with us," said Jeffre. "But I am still waiting to see a real comprehensive plan that addresses the racial disparity in our justice system. And I also want to call on City Council to repeal their Draconian marijuana ordinance. Portune reaffirmed, at our meeting, his desire to see that ordinance repealed. I'm disappointed David Pepper has not followed Portune's lead on that issue."

Though the Southwest Ohio Green Party has not voted on an official statement, Jeffre said he continues to oppose the jail plan. That's why he joined Christopher Smitherman and the NAACP on the steps of the Courthouse for a press conference this afternoon.

"Portune and Pepper have said that 300 prisoners need to be released early due to a lack of jail space," said Jeffre. "I am behind the NAACP in asking that they make Levonn Smith their first early release."

In a press statement issued last week, Smitherman claimed that Levonn Smith's situation is an example of a broken criminal justice system.

"We keep being told about a great need for new jail beds, but I don't think Levonn Smith is an example of a threat to our community," explained Jeffre. "This is why so many people oppose the nearly billion dollar jail. We must work towards the equal application of justice."

Two weeks ago Levonn Smith was jailed without bond for animal cruelty. Her 14 year old had chained a dog in the back yard where it later died. She was unaware of it until the SPCA showed up at her door, although she should have been. She has 2 other small kids at home, works 60 hours/week at a restaurant, and hasn’t been in any trouble for the last 10 years.

Judge Heather Russell probably remembered another recent story when she found Ms. Smith guilty. A Judge in Butler County was reviled by pet lovers after he returned a mangled dog to its abuser. I'm sure Judge Russell loves dogs, but it had to be the public outcry over that other case that drove her ruling. It certainly doesn’t appear to be fairness or balance.

We have these two stories in the same region at the same time. One urban, lower income, black woman accidentally kills a dog and serves 16 days in jail with more to come. Another suburban, higher income, white woman accidentally kills a child (Cecilia Slaby) and never sees the inside of a court room.

True justice lies somewhere between these two extremes. We all want legal punishments dispensed blindly and in proportion to the seriousness of the offense. However, outcomes this far apart make it clear that we are still a long way from that lofty goal.

It’s no wonder the NAACP has been so vocal in opposing the new Hamilton County jail. Rulings like these make it all too clear who it’s being built for.

Funny how the jails got overcrowded and we need a billion dollar tax hike after the Pepper pot law was enacted.

Funny how they've been overcrowded for years (before the law was passed), and that early releases are actually significantly down since the law passed.

Pot law may be unconstitutional as a violation of equal protection ?

This doesn't happen when you live in Cleveland !

The wRong wingnut whackos merely arrest those who threaten their cartel.

The street soon learns who to buy from !

In the last 35 years, please tell me one $1,000,000.00 LOCAL white collar drug bust of the money man ?

The last time we posted that question, they all of a sudden found two, out of town black men, to bust !

We guess, they were infringing the wRong wingnut whacko protected turf ?

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Why does it surprise anyone that the death of an animal results in more involvement of the justice system than the death of a child? Advocates for life have been labeled right-wing extremists or Christian radicals for years by people advocating abortion. Society has accepted those labels for 35 years. By valuing people based on how convenient they are to the rest of society, the unborn, children, elderly, minorities, the poor, etc. are being dehumanized to the point of being expendable, so it doesn’t surprise me that the criminal justice system is following the trend.

Does the bold blogger smoke marijuana?

David Pepper for Congress = Willie Horton ad.

We're going to see more of these penalties against animal abusers. Mike Vick made abusing pets a household buzzword. Thank him, not revile Judge Russell.

As for Jeffre & his take on the weed ordinance being Draconian, no one cares about Jeffre. That boy isn't going to finish in the top 15.

drug abuse destroys the fabric of the community, and the minds of the abusers.

"..Does the bold blogger smoke marijuana?..."

You make assumptions that there is only one, that would be an illusion !

'bold endeavors' does not smoke !

'bold endeavors' does not drink !

Except socially !

We work, as contractor, with highly sensitive information, data mining, etc.. (We are watching you, as well !)

Piss tests are routine. Two within the last six weeks. Sooooooooooo !

The last Labcore was close. We were at an elected wRong wingnut whackos home and they passed us a joint. It had probably been several years.

Most of the time, we just say no, but, this time we were working on one contract and didn't expect another non-conflicting contract to become available.

So, we partaked and enjoyed !

Passed the piss test, got the contract and now keeping an eye out for other wRong wingnut whackos to entrap !

The only time we have ever smoked was with corporate wRong wingnut whackos and their elected officials !

One bush pioneer was a coke-head and the corporate jet was making far to many trips to Florida !

They are no longer 'hanging' around !

Going to China on business, I'll make certain it is all white for you !

Honesty, the best policy:

That is why it is easy for us to say:

PATHETIC HYPOCRITES !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

"racial disparity in our justice system"

How about the fact that most violent crimes in this city are committed by blacks?! Jeffre can pander to the NAACP all he wants, but this is no excuse for the black community not taking personal responsibility for black on black violence.

Jeffre and Brian Garry are a couple of ultra-liberal tools who are incapable of original thought.

We really think the voters should put things into perspective !

The jail is mere chump change in the scheme of things !

There are bigger and fatter wRong wingnut whackos to fry !

We think Jeffre should stop:

Mitch'n !

We'll take Justin over a 'mad brad', grand-standing, bird-ling or cole-aberator @ any election !

The voter will at least know what they are getting, even if a little 'green' !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, Vote for real Democrats and Jeffre !

wow, first Jeffre aligns himself with The Beano of Cincinnati, then Sean "The Naked Candidate" Holbrook, and now Smitherman.

Quite the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen aren't they?

Little Jeffre is quite a guy. He! He! The foot-tapping bold typist knows quite well.

at 5:08 PM, September 07, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who taught little Jeffre such a big word as "draconian"?

at 12:22 AM, September 13, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who is the 'bold typing foot tapper?'...is that some reference to Larry Craig...who tapped his way out of the Senate? I doubt if LARRY CRAIG would support Jeffre since...Craig is a hypocritical Republican! How times change! It seems the straight laced GOP's can't come up with a sex scandal that involves someone of the opposite sex.

(1) Rep. Barney Frank [democRAT] had a gay brothel operating out of his D.C. townhouse. It was all the fault of his live-in lover, Steve Gobie, of course. Barney was shocked!, shocked! I tell you, to find out the truth of what was going on in his own home. The House voted 408-18 to reprimand him.

(2) Rep. Gerry Studds [democRAT] was censured by the House of Representatives after he admitted to having had a sexual affair with a 17-year-old male page.

Unlike Larry Craig, who did the right thing by leaving office, neither one of these democRATS resigned. Thus endeth the lesson.
