For those of you scoring at home....

The Cincinnati Democratic Committee is about to endorse another candidate for the Cincinnati Board of Education.

But didn't they already do that, you ask?

Indeed they did.

They endorsed Eve Bolton and Martha Good and Aisha Nurredin prior to the Aug. 23 candidate filing deadline.

But neither Good nor Nurredin could manage to get the 300 valid signatures needed to become a candidate.

Before that, though, the Cincinnati Democratic Committee had flirted with three school board candidates who planned to run as a team - Jim Tarbell, Anne Power, and Sally Warner.

But those three failed to get their 300 signatures.

So now, according to Aryeh Alex, co-chairman of the Cincinnati Democratic Commitee, one of the remaining school board candidates (one of the four who could manage to get the petitions straight), former stand-up comic and TV reporter Michael Flannery will get the Democrats' endorsement.

3-2=1; 1+1=2. That's how many school board candidates the Democrats have.

Why is the Enquirer trying to railroad Flannery's campaign? "Comic and TV reporter" are the only labels they give him. Flannery is a devoted father and has been one of Cincinnati's strongest children's advocates for years. He's raised money for children's causes, and devoted his career to drawing attention to children's issues. When he was on TV, he developed "9 on Your Kids' Side" to lend a voice to children in Cincinnati who were being mistreated, misrepresented, and who had genuine needs the people of Cincinnati could help address.

I have no connection to Flannery's campaign. I just think he's a refreshing change and is the only person in the race worthy of occupying Jack Gilligan's seat on the board.

Huggable Howard, we all know that you are a republican already, but thanks for making it perfectly clear for all of us.

Why didn't they endorse Democrat Rick Williams? Because he's black?

No, they didn't endorse Rick Williams because in 2004 he abandoned the schools and the Democratic Party and sided with Melanie Bates and Tom Brinkman to oppose a levy renewal for CPS. The renewal did not raise taxes, but that didn't matter to anti-tax nuts like Bates, Williams, and Brinkman. Williams is anti-education. Period.

Vote NO on Williams.
Vote NO on Bates.
Vote YES for our schools.

If anon 10:37 really thinks Howard is a Republican he should review Howard's reporting in last year's race between Cranley and Chabot. I sure hope Cranley was paying Howard, otherwise he seemed to have given up his journalistic credibility for nothing.

Let me see... 70% of the students are Black... About 45% of the citizens of Cincinnati are Black... But the Cincinnati Democratic Committee won't endorse a Black man for school board.

CDC tried to endorse an African-American Democrat for school board. Wendell Young refused so he could run what will ultimately be his second failed attempt at a city council race.

As for Williams, When that black man has a proven record of being anti-school, why the hell should anybody endorse him for the board?

Nate, being black isn't a job qualification. Get over it.

You aren't excluded from the party because of your race, it is because of your positions. The same is true for Rick Williams.

Ken Blackwell is black but did you vote for him?

We sure can't have a school board member or two demanding fiscal responsibility of themselves first before they ask the taxpayers for more money. If you have ever opposed a single CPS levy, even once, you are banned forever from receiving a Democrat endorsement.

Or does that just apply to Black people?

The 'White Democrat' with the bad memory asked, "Or does that just apply to Black people"

No, Melanie Bates was rightly denied an endorsement in 2005 by the Party for her anti-education stance. Bates campaigned against a levy renewal in 2004 that did not raise taxes and was booted from the Party for it. It was the right move, and it's unfortunate that someone who works against schools was reelected notwithstanding. Democrats are better on education, and as big as our Party is, we have no room for anti-education fools like Bates and Williams.

Vote NO on Bates.
Vote NO on Williams.
Vote NO on Ghiz.
Vote YES for our schools.

Nate, it is unfortunate that race is the only prism through which you see things. Sometimes you are dead-on right, sometimes you are dead-on wrong.

You are hitting home runs on the Brenda Slaby case. If anything, you probably haven't fully exploited the cronyism going on there.

On the Rick Williams thing, though, you are way off base. They need new blood there. Period. It's not a black or white issue, it's a red issue.

Rick Williams was stripped of the Democratic Party's endorsement back in 2003! In case you didn't know, 2003 came before the 2004 levy. And what was Rick's crime - he urged for minority inclusion in the school construction project. The Democratic Party does not have room for black men who refuse to obey whitey.

Even David Pepper, the ultimate of White Democrats, condemned this move.

Pepper said the debate was about racial politics, pure and simple.

"It was a nasty fight," he said. "The worst message we can send as a party is that someone who stands up for more minority inclusion should not be in the Democratic Party."

(It's too bad David Pepper became what he rightly criticized in 2003.)

Chris Nelms is black and CDC didn't endorse him. What is that about? What are we going to do about our children and our schools? We need new blood for our school board. After meeting with Aisha Nurredin, I thought she could bring energy to the school board along with two new candidates. The question is: Who are those two candidates? We need new candidates to change the board.

We need a board that reflects the student population of the district. It is hard for people to understand "our children" if they can't relate to "our children" We need 3 new candidates for the school board. We need new blood if we plan to save our schools.
