"Innovator" DeWine

If you happen to read the "Innovators in Action" report turn to page 22. You'll see a familiar face.
Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine's column "Using Competition Because Taxes are Too High" was selected as one of the 10 published in the most recent report. DeWine joins folks like Governor Jeb Bush (page 3) and Mayor Rudy Giuliani (page 8).
For those who don't keep up with such things, "Innovators in Action" is a respected national publication issued annually by the Reason Foundation, a public policy review organization. It promotes things like choice, transparency, competition and innovative thinking within government.
Editor Geoffrey Segal puts it well:
"Put a candidate on the campaign trail and watch him raise the banner of reform—but once in office, elected officials quickly discover that the road to reform is congested with failed programs, entrenched special interests, and a lack of political will.
"Innovators in Action showcases the efforts of visionaries who have moved policy from the theoretical to the practical. Thanks to this remarkable group of reformers, government has become more responsive, more effective and more efficient."

DeWine's column in a nutshell: He thinks taxes are too high. He forms a managed competition program to save the county money. He trudges through layers of swampy bureaucracy to get it done. The program's doing well.

Two key passages:

"We were fortunate to hook up with Reason Foundation early in the process. Geoffrey Segal helped us examine best practices throughout the country and develop a process for Hamilton County."

"With the assistance of Reason Foundation, however, we were able to effectively communicate our message to key players and bring them in to the process as active participants."

I wonder why they chose Pat as such an "innovator"? Or, was it a way to pat themselves on their backs?

Jessica,

Thanks for the stenography...

Umm... you fail to mention that the Reason Foundation is a fundamentally anti-tax, anti-public spending "think tank." No wonder, they picked a wing-nut like DeWine to promote.

Who the hell do you think is responsible for the sorry state of child adoption services in Hamilton County? DeWine and that crook Heimlich. They cut service after service, forcing good people to leave the agencies because their hands were tied. Now, DeWine has the gall to talk trash about the very same agencies he wrecked.

Please do you homework before posting crap like this.

What a coincidence that the Reason Foundation served as a consultant on the very projects for which they now have given Pat the award! Pat must have been truly shocked that they noticed his hard work.

What a load of cr*p!

The Reason Foundation maintains that it's non-partisan, however it's a right-wing ‘free market’ pro-corporate shill organization which advocates anti-environmental policies and pushes privatization of all government services, including the elimination of public schools, privatizing prisons amongst others, in order to enrich corporate America. Their funding sources include Big Oil- Exxon-Mobile, Shell, Corrections Corporation of America, Phillip-Morris, Chevron, American Forest & Paper Association and other interest groups. This organization vigorasly opposed the tobacco litigation & settlements of the 1990’s, spurred on by their coporate funders at the tobacco companies. Look at every single one of their award recipients: they are all republicans. I’m sure that Reason would be proud of Patrick for his role in the taxpayer fleecing that was the sale of Drake Hospital to a private corporation for a percent of it’s net worth.

Managed competition does not work. It costs taxpayers more whenever the government outsources public project to corporations. Dewine is simply looking for a way to pay back his donors.

"innovator" my behind - how about the great "imitator" - DaWhine can copy the best programs he can buy! What an absolute joke.
And the poster who talked about DaWhiner being the problem, nailed it. DaWhine and friend cut services and programs and now wants to claim to want to start a program to fix their own gaffs. And not one success in all the effort.
And I particularly like the way he dogs his fellow Republicans who refuse to give up any power and control to save taxpayers misspent funds - love it!
I really need to register as a Democrat 'cause I'm sick of being associated with these idiots.

Why aren't we being mentioned as innovators? When we are told of problems, we raise taxes and raise spending. That is extremely innovative. Aren't we the first to come up with that idea?

Pat's project studied numerous areas, and found every time that the County itself provided the best service! Impressive!

Well done, Pat! Its innovative thinking like this that will help save Hamilton County. Now, if we can only get the other County officials to give up some of their fiefdoms and bring efficiency to the fleet maintenance...

Can Reason help find a workable jail solution?

Child adoption problems are DeWine's fault? Come on now. Check out the court ordered monitor's report. The problem began YEARS before he even got to the county. But you're right, it's DeWine's fault that an agency filled with liberals and created to administer failed liberal social programs and policies has not done their job well.

Since you know so much, why don't you name one adoption related program cut while DeWine was in office?

Da whiner has been the hindlick and he will be the next to go, PERIOD !

STOP Da Wine-ing !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

Heimlich and DeWine froze the hiring at JFS causing the backlog of cases, the overload of caseworkers which gives us the highest case-staff ratio in the state -- and the results are obvious.
Heck, the dynamic duo also cut funding to the MR/DD that serves our very most vulnerable children and adults and cut the support for these kids during school age years and required the schools to pick up the costs despite the public voting for a specific tax levy to provide those very services ---- need I go on?

DeWine is DeSperate because he knows the Repugnicants are about to get wiped off the map. Their gullible Jesus Freaks followers have finally seen the light that they were duped into supporting plundering pedophiles. Wall Street has finally figured out that Repugnicants have only been making themselves rich and they are backig democrats now. they know the nation's best years were the 90s and know who was President then.

Reason shows up without a competitive process and is going to save the world...how ironic. DeWine is counting paperclips in county departments when he should be showing leadership...where is the JFS reform plan since he is so interested in saving the children? We are still waiting on something in writing describing his jail plan. Rhetoric: the veneer of a fading politician.

There was absolutely no hiring freeze at JFS. The caseworker positions are now, and have been open and unfilled. The simple fact is that they are high-stress, and like many government positions - low pay. That contributes to a high turnover rate, and unfilled positions.

So please - do go on...

7/25, 1:17 PM - of course DeWine and Heimlich cut spending too deep. That's why we have the 2nd highest taxes in the state, because we don't spend enough. There is no amount of spending that can satisfy people like you.

at 6:16 PM, July 26, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

CJ, waste, fraud, and abuse are 3 good reasons we have both high taxes and poor results. When the Repugnicants you continually shill for spend taxpayer dollars on no-bid contracts and no-show jobs for their cronies, you'll end up with increased costs and decreased results. You are such a loyal party hack, I wonder if YOU have one of those jobs. If so, you could definitely afford to move out of your mommy's basement, unless that porn habit of yours cuts into your income too much.

Anon 10:14 -you're just full of it! And they didn't cut MR/DD either? And they didn't give away Drake? And they didn't throw away Krings with his huge parachute? And they didn't cut medical care to poor children? And they didn't adopt the rate of inflation motto that prevented the hiring of needed staff?

The positions weren't filled because a hiring freeze was proposed by your "boy" from Colorado.

Yes, the jobs are stressful - especially when your request to add more positions is denied and you're carrying the load of two.

Hey, if the dynamic duo (Heimlich and DeWine)wanted better wuality care - then why didn't they "order" JFS to hire, eh? I mean , for four years they had exclusive control- so who else is to blame?

at 10:39 AM, July 27, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

And now DeWine wants to cut far more positions so he can keep subsidizing Butler County government with Ham. County taxpayer dollars.

The hiring freeze did NOT apply to JFS, which is largely funded with federal dollars. That is a fact.
