A challenger for Wulsin?

The Jean Schmidt-Victoria Wulsin rematch in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District may not be a sure thing.

Schmidt picked up a Republican primary challenger last week in the form of Phil Heimlich, who became unemployed last fall when David Pepper up-ended him in the Hamilton County commissioner's race.

Now Wulsin, who came within a hair of an improbable upset win in the tradtionally Republican 2nd District last fall, may soon have yet another primary opponent.

Steve Black - lawyer at Graydon, Head & Ritchey and son of retired federal appeals court judge Robert L. Black - has been making the rounds among Democratic leaders in the seven-county district and is on the verge of announcing his candidacy.

Monday, he was out in Eastgate, working the crowd of Democrats who had gathered to greet Gov. Ted Strickland, who had come for a roundtable discussion of child health care. All he would say Monday was that he'll make an annoucement later this week.

Wulsin was going to have a primary anyway - Jeff Sinnard, the civil engineer and stay-at-home dad from Anderson Township says he is running - but Sinnard has run in the basement the last two times around and doesn't have two nickels to rub together.

Black, on the other hand, poses a different set of problems for Wulsin. He, like Wulsin, is from Indian Hill; and he, like her, can probably tap into some considerable money.

Black has one more thing that Wulsin might end up wishing she still had - Wulsin's 2006 campaign manager, Mary Huttlinger, who signed on to run Black's campaign.

Robert Black is one of the great public figures in this region. Wulsin supporters should be careful about using him as a way to attack Steve Black--it will only backfire.

The blog entry Howard wrote today identifies Judge Robert Black as a retired Federal Judge. The guest column linked by anon 10:47 identifies the judge as a retired judge from the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas and the Ohio First District Court of Appeals.

Possibilities in no particular order:
1. Error by Wilkinson today
2. Error by Enquirer editor in 2004
3. The judge, after being elected to Hamilton County and the Court of Appeals, was appointed to a Federal position. The Enquirer left some of his positions out both in 2004 and today, perhaps for space reasons.
4. Two different Judge Robert Blacks.
5. I really should get back to work.

Mary didn't do such a great job- I was a Wulsin vol & am a ward chair , & rarely heard from her vs other staffers kept in close contact. New blood for Vic's staff is better, the only concern is will Mary use her knowledge of Vic to hurt her or attack her- I'm betting yes.

Howard,

I actually have my third nickel and am working hard on raising the fourth.

Certainly Wulsin and Black have what party leaders often seem to value most - an Indian Hill zip code and the ability “to tap into some considerable money”.

It is sad that nobody even pretends that political races are about anything but money.

Got get going. Those nickels are not going to raise themselves. If anyone can spare a dime, feel free to donate at SINNARD.COM.

Dear All About You, the useless Victoria Wulsin haters:

I believe there is a museum for your dentures ?

You need to talk to Victoria !

We have enough trouble dealing with the challengers we bought and induced into our political system !

Those that came to this state voluntarily have their own ideas to float !

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Yes Jeff, we call them elections but they are nothing more than auctions and that's why we get sold out to the highest bidder everytime.

The media is to blame because they make all the $$$$ from this undemocratic money laundering and bribery system. If they actually would get off of their asses and do their jobs then we would have real coverage of issues.

Instead they cover the horse race. Who's up in the polls and raising the most corporate cash. Then they'll write about the commercials if they can afford them and pretend that they have done their jobs as the fourth estate.

What a great dis-service you do to our community. This is contempt for democracy. You should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

Well, right-wing hate radio and the bilous blogosphere should be quiet for the next few days or weeks.

Jerry Falwell has just died. No marching orders to be issued to his right-wing nutjob followers.

I guess they'll have some sort of klavern in the next few weeks, probably somewhere down south, maybe Fox News will cover it.

I wonder who the next head right-winger will be??? Dobson, probably.

Thanks for the link to your website Jeff. Let's have a contest and see how many FEC violations we can find on your site. I found the first -- a candidate for federal office cannot link their campaign website to the House of Representatives' website or any other governmental office.

I believe that Robert and Helen Black were HUGE supporters of the Wulsin campaign, maxing out thier contributions for both elections cycles.

Looks like she can kiss those $s goodbye.

This is going to be an interesting primary, with lots of name calling from both sides. Also, we can not forget about the entertainment that our own retard TNP will bring to the race.

FYI - Our infamous BOLD BLOGGER is a 100% Wulsin supporter.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

AND... Have a nice day.

Schmidt et al should be worried with Mrs. Huttinger on Blacks campaign. Heres a campaign manager who when she took over for Wulsin, inherited a campaign that didnt have two nickels to rub together, and that was being run by a teenager. Huttinger took a weak, extremely liberal nut job candidate and in a few short months gave the race national focus and almost stole the victory in a biased conservative district. Now that shes on board with running the show for Black, maybe the people around here will finally get the representation in Congress that we deserve.

My husband and I also worked on Wulsins campaign and I have to say if Mary had not been on board, Vic would have horribly lost. It would'nt have even been close. Go Mr. Black!

Neither Vic Wulsin or Jean Schmidt need to bother with the election now that Black is running. With a lifetime of public service THIS is the candidtae that can bring us out of the darkness.

at 4:43 PM, May 16, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

With a lifetime spent in public service and politics Mary Huttlinger is sharp, focused, energized, and more than able to successfully run a strong campaign for Mr. Black. I see this pairing as the best opportunity to unseat Heir Schmidt this time around. Blacks obviously in this to win, and the DCCC and Washington should wake up and take notice with this news.

I've known Steve Black for some time and he's got all the goods to trounce either Heimlick or Schmidt, and is a much stronger contender than Wulsin. He's bright, sincere, honest, and well-connected. Thank goodness someone with such cred has entered the race.

at 6:19 PM, May 16, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

How obvious is it that 3:40, 3:41, and 3:43 are the same person?

Much like Woodruff wasn't responsible for Hackett's performance, Huttlinger was not the reason for Wulsin's success. Quite the contrary, she should be blamed for losing the election.

Wulsin was getting SLAMMED with mailers and ads for months before the campaign decided to respond and this was a HUGE strategic mistake. Huttlinger let Schmidt frame Wulsin's candidacy and the debate surrounding the race and didn't respond until the final month. Oddly enough, the Wulsin primary campaign was aggressive in establishing her name and giving her an identity (for the scope of the race, that is)--things which Huttlinger flat out failed to do in anything approaching a timely manner. The race drew national attention because of the poll numbers, the first of which was released in June, long before Huttlinger would have had an impact.

Black has huge hurdles to overcome. For the casual primary voter, he has zero name recognition. For the loyal Dem, he has a history of pulling Republican ballots. And I still wouldn't expect there to be much money in the primary so he won't have the resources to campaign effectively. Good thing that he is blowing money on staff a full YEAR before the primary.

Sorry guys. Save your money for the first district. Unless Hackett jumps in, this race is lost.

And you're an idiot. I worked on Wulsins campaign. Mary Huttlinger didn't come on board until the summer. At that time Vic had NO staff, NO money and NO clue. Mary did an excellent job in getting Vic to stay on message and raised a ton of money for the race. Vic was difficult to manage, refused to fund raise most of the time, was off message more than she was on, and acted a lot like she didn't even want to win. In fact- the running theme around HQ was we would win "DESPITE" the candidate. Now, I'm certain that even if you asked her, Mary would not confirm ANY of these things. I know she cares a great deal for Vic, and isn't the type of person to say these things and I hate to talk badly about anyone. I too think Vic is a wonderful person, and she surely would have been better than Schmidt- but the candidate lost the election. Not her campaign manager. This is the problem with our party. We're fractured at best, point fingers, name call, and get uptight because someone didn't return a phone call, or invite us to pass out signs. Instead of seeing this as an opportunity to have the RIGHT candidate run this time, led by a strong support staff that can take back OH2- we'll instead wind up smoking a bowl, holding hands and singing "Kumbuya", while we have a meeting somewhere in Clermont County where we'll sit around and whine and moan and wring our hands and do nothing, while Rove and the rest of those A-Holes in the Republican party sit back and watch us self destruct again...and again. In defense of Huttlinger she has had the experience in Washington. She has the connections. The savvy. The knowledge, and the ability to help a strong candidate get elected. Don't drink the kool-aid that says otherwise. We came damn close to winning, and we we're proud of our accomplishments as a team and of her as our manager. Black is lucky to have her.

"And you're an idiot"

Sorry, no. She sat back and let her candidate get slammed by the opposition. She let The NRCC create an identity for Wulsin instead of coming out and establishing her candidate.

Campaign school 101: frame the debate before your opposition has the chance to do so.

Huttlinger did alot right--I know how weak a candidate Wulsin is and how difficult she is to manage--but she failed on the simplest and most obvious point and THAT cost us the election.

at 9:51 PM, May 18, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well "Idiot" when the campaign doesn't have any money because the candidate wouldn't fundraise until Sept. and getting her to appear at events for earned media was a struggle; framing the candidate was difficult. Mary let a young staff but talented staff, if I say so myself, use the internet, which was free, to try and frame Wulsin. Half the time -- we wasted time because we had meetings about meetings because Wulsin was afraid to let us make decisions for her. The fact she came so close was a miracle. Unfortunately, I doubt Wulsin learned anything from us or the consultants and will revert to her old ways and sabotage her own campaign.

Steve Black may come from a life of privledge, but anyone who knows him will tell you he has lived in the same simple farm house by the side of the road for over 20 years and spent a lifetime in service to others. He is everything we need in a representative. Relentless worker for the greater good, highest personal integrity, sound judgement, grounded. He is extremely intelligent. Do not be offput by his sometimes halting style of speach. His mind is already racing 20 steps ahead from the thought being spoken. Mr. Black can not be deprecated for the national embarrassment of our flawed election campaign system. In Canada there is a set amount of money for each candidate and only a short few months in which they can run ads etc. Until we find a more equitable system such as that, Mr. Black's ability to raise money is only to our advantage, the end result being one of the finest congressmen we will ever have.

I just want to say that as a former Wulsin for Congress staff member who worked for Mary Huttlinger and was involved in Wulsin's '05 and '06 elections, all of the back-and-forth blaming of Mary and Vic that has gone on in these commetns is just pathetic. Together, Vic and Mary built one of the finest campaings out of nothing. They had almost no help outside the district until that last month, but they were able to make a safe Republican district into one of the most competitive races in the country.

Vic's 1% loss was not Mary's fault or Vic's fault. It was just due to the difficulty of introducing an unknown candidate to hundreds of thousands of voters who are in the habit of voting Republican. Ohioans want a representative who will help them most, and many in the 2nd district just assume that that person is a Republican. It takes time to convince voters that a Democrat is their best choice.

Steve Black is a great man, and would be a great Representative. He's lucky to have Mary helping him, but his biggest challenge is communicating with voters across the district that he can help them more than Schmidt. Wulsin has already spent two years meeting voters and has already convinced 49.5% of the electorate that she knows what they need.. This head-start will help enormously in an '08 election that is overshadowed by the presidential race.

Having working with Mary Huttlinger, I know how well she did in managing the campaign. It will be hard for Victoria Wulsin to defeat Black with Mary as the campaign manager.
