Not exactly a sad day when a hate mongering, bigoted, egotistical blowhard checks out.

Adios, fatman.

Here we go. So I guess this site will get as full of hate and vitriol as the Louisville C-J comment site. People were praising his death and calling Falwell intolerant, etc. etc. What I find ironic is the same people that call Falwell intolerant are acting just as intolerant to him! Nice.

I'm going to try to be civil, and not overtly "hateful" and "vitriolic" (as another "anonymous" poster seems certain we're going to be) -- but I have a really hard time feeling sorry at the passing of someone like Falwell. IMHO, he's done far more harm than good to this country and to Christianity in general. He and his ilk are actually Old Testament Jews, full of condemnation and hate, not New Testament Christians, filled with love and forgiveness.

Boy, you've gotta love these anonymous posters of the so-called "tolerant" left. It seems that the only thing that is NOT tolerated by both the left and the Democrat Party are the Judeo-Christian standards that are found in the Bible itself. True to both the Bible's predictions of latter day people and George Orwell's "Animal Farm", that which is GOOD has become evil, and that which is EVIL has become good. Those praising Rev. Falwell's passing will have their judgement day before God, too. You had better fear that day.

Well, I hope his lord is as kind and benevolent to him in his afterlife as he was to all the people on earth he royally screwed, bad-mouthed, belittled.
Let the judgement begin....

Either way you look at him, you can say you learned something from him. For many of us, that means learning how NOT to be. I'm sure he drove more people away than he brought in. Perhaps he will be 'retrained' now.

Falwell was a FAT-HEADED BIGOTED SCHMUCK... Now if the other 20 or so Christian Bigot Powerbrokers would finally kick the bucket we'd be in good shape.

And people please don't give me this "oh you're intolerant for praising his death..." garbage. People who behave like Falwell should expect nothing less than angry eulogies from the massses. For a lot of people in America, Falwell is like a Christian Hitler so his death is truly something to celebrate.

I'm glad the freak is dead. His Moral Majority evolved into a religious right that is a horrible, powerful lobby in this country based on the audacity, opinions and beliefs of a minority. Loved how Larry Flynt always gave him such hell. One my suspect he is being judged at this very moment...which he deserves.

Dr. Falwell was one of the most loving and caring people out there. I had read or heard once that he called all his children everday (even as adults) to let them know he loved them.

Why not? Falwell was full of hate and vitriol himself. He deserves no better.

Good!

Falwell represents the brain-dead folks who voted for Bush. They're so full of contradictions and emotion ..the result being mob behavior responsible for what's wrong in Americia today!

Good riddance! Falwell was a failure, as was his movement. The man was a disaster for Christianity, for true Americans, for free expression, and his legacy will be one of disdain and ridicule directed after him for generations to come.

Not much to be said or Falwell - he was ethically challenged, to say the least. I believe he was simply one more huckster, ala PT Barnum or, say, Pat Robertson. I don't know of many Christians for whom he spoke - he preached intolerance.

I'm not sure what to make of Falwell's death. I'm still waiting for a press release from Tinky Winky.

Well if as Mr. Falwell said 9/11 was God's judgement on America, I guess this morning God passed judgement on Mr. Falwell. I sincerely hope Mr. Falwell is fond of a warm climate since I suspect he will be spending eternity in one.

"...you've gotta love these anonymous posters of the so-called "tolerant" left...."

If Falwell is an example of tolerance, we can't wait until there is none "left" !

Evil man is gone. Although he was no longer relevant near the end and had no power, his legacy of hate & intolerance lives on. This is not about "left vs. right," rather, it's about good vs. evil!

Man, all this ill will and hatred of what's his face.....I love it....I thought I was the only one who would be glad to see him go....Now if Jimmy Swaggert and Tammy Faye go we could have a trifecta.....adios loser..

I think Mr. Falwell is sitting with God right now, and doing his level best to beg forgiveness and keep from being drop-kicked right to hell.

"Falwell is like a Christian Hitler"

Hitler was a Christian. Did you think he was Jewish?

Like him or not- there is no reason for the hateful, bigoted responses.

But what would expect from the "tolerant" folks. You are no different than Falwell- no- you're even worse. You can't even let the dead RIP. Hypocrites.

"...Hitler was a Christian. Did you think he was Jewish?..."

There were rumours that Hitler was one-quarter Jewish and that his grandmother, Maria Schicklgruber, became pregnant while working as a servant in a Jewish household. During the 1920s, the implications of these rumours were politically explosive, especially for the proponent of a racist ideology. Opponents tried to prove that Hitler had Jewish or Czech ancestors. Although these rumours were never confirmed, for Hitler they were reason enough to conceal his origins. According to Robert G. L. Waite in The Psychopathic God: Adolf Hitler, Hitler made it illegal for German women to work in Jewish households, and after the "Anschluss" (annexation) of Austria, Hitler had his father's hometown obliterated by turning it into an artillery practice area. Thus Hitler seems to have betrayed a fear of being Jewish. Waite says that Hitler's insecurities in this regard may have been more important than whether Judaic ancestry could have been proven by his peers.

"Like him or not- there is no reason for the hateful, bigoted responses. "

Sure there is... Falwell lived a life of hateful, bigoted responses to well just about everything.

It heartens me to see that more people are of like mind in my opinion of him. He did once say "9/11 was punishment from god".

Well then ... instead of a War on Terror... we need a War on God.

John, others. Larry Flynt showed a great deal of class after learning the news. He said he disagreed with everything that Falwell stood for, but said he appreciated the sincerity and also that they became good friends over time.

Link here to Access Hollywood article.

So apparently this self-described pornographer and patriot apparently has a great deal more self-restraint and decency than the (typically) anonymous folks commenting here.

Go figure.

Maybe not a war on God, but definitely a war on religion, anon 7:39. Without the title Reverend in front of his name, Falwell would have been routinely called out for what he was--an ignorant, hate-spewing, racist, sexist, homophobic, bigot. But religion has such a strangle-hold on American society (and especially politics) that Falwell was able to keep his message of hate and intolerance on the airwaves. Think about it. Falwell said on his TV show that 9/11 could be blamed on feminists, liberals, and gays. Compare that, and other Falwell "messages" to what Don Imus said. While not to condone Imus, where was the outrage for Falwell? Why didn't he lose his sponsors and as a result, his show, after he made those twisted claims, while the bodies of the 9/11 dead were still warm?

A man must be held accountable for his deeds. Falwell lived the life of an evil, bigoted fool. I don't believe he shall be judged in an afterlife, since I don't believe the god he claimed to pray to exists. But before twisting his legacy into some white-washed lie, why not take one last opportunity to tell the truth about a monster who, thankfully, will no longer be an influence or a voice in American culture.

This is truly wonderful! To see so many people, in a conservative city like Cincinnati, Ohio, no less, knew Jerry Falwell for what he was---a bigot---is just great! Falwell died a failure. May his memory ever reflect that.

Mr. Falwell's death should remind us to the intentional damage he inflicted on the separation of church and state in this country. He would have been perfectly willing to impose a Christian version of the odious Sharia. A depressing number of otherwise thoughtful citizens were complicit in the near dismantling of the constitutional ban on the establishment of a state religion.

Reverend Daniel E. Pilarczyk definitely outshines Reverend Falwell, when he shields the Priests who molested children.

Jerry Falwell was a brother in Christ, but he was like the older brother in the story of the Prodigal Son who got so angry because the father (God) was gracious to the prodigal.

I didn't like Falwell's arrogance; I didn't like his politics; I didn't like his demonizing of those who disagreed with him; I didn't like the way he seemed so buddy-buddy with God that he could let the world know waht God felt/thought about liberals/gays/Hillary/911/fill in the blank.

What I especially didn't like is the way he and several others convinced the media they were the faces and voices of Christianity in the US. Whenever there was a crisis/controversy/sound bite needed, he would be called and featured. True, I think the media was hoping for a foolish statement like the one about who was to blame for 9/11. But far worse was the constant rhetoric which taught that God is vengeful, angry, judgmental, homophobic and in the pocket of the religious right. Falwell used his 'bully pulpit' to indeed bully many of God's beloved children.

There are those who say he helped to bring a moral and religious emphasis, which was missing, to politics. But what was brought to the table of political discourse was a spirit of meanness, a practice of demonization, and a smug assumption that because the religious right spoke for God, they were never wrong. I have never understood how a group who proclaimed to be Christian could support taking away health care, housing, education, and other services for the poorest of our nation, the very ones Jesus spent so much time with while on earth.

I pray for Jerry Falwell, his family, and all who mourn his death.

But I also pray that more compassionate, loving, caring, inclusive voices from Christianity might be given the same sort of coverage by the media he often received.
