No concrete plans for ad

In Columbus, Democratic and Republican pols all make a point of showing up for the Shamrock Club’s candidates’ night which was held on Wednesday. The Shamrock Club is the city’s largest Irish organization and hosts the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in town, closing downtown streets for three hours.

The scuttlebutt swirling around the party, along with the kegs of beer, was all about Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland's supposed faux pas in his Cleveland debate with Republican Ken Blackwell that afternoon.

Immediately after the debate, the Blackwell camp sent an e-mail and video clip to a zillion closest friends saying Strickland had “demeaned” Ohio’s working men and women saying, “Without education, I probably would be doing what my brothers have done with their lives, finishing concrete for a living.”

The story being floated at the Shamrock Club was that labor was “mad as hell” at Strickland and that Blackwell intended to use the clip in a campaign ad.

Bill Anthony, chair of the Franklin County Democratic Party and a local leader of the OCSEA-AFSCME labor union, said it is not so that labor is upset with Strickland. “I used to pour concrete,” he said. “There’s nothing demeaning in that.”

Blackwell’s campaign spokesman, Carlo LoParo, said that “it was a stupid thing to say” but that the campaign has no plans to make an ad out of it.

i imagine if strickland was a concrete man - heprobably wouldn'tbe running for governor. education, generally, provides opportunities not just to increased onesearnings andlive more comfortably, but to alsoopen doors the regular working man could never pass through
the unique and amazing thing about strickland is -he never forgetshis roots,is grateful forhis blessings and can still relate - never forget - the wroking man
that's why he is leading inthe polls and hearts of ohioians

For the same Democrats that call Blackwell "Uncle Tom", demeaning The Working Man probably isn't that big of a deal.

I suppose if one can't find substantive criticism then inaccurate remarks saying Strickland demeaned the working man are the understandable spin. Those who believe such spin aren't going to consider the facts. Their minds are already set in stone.

Personally, I've already got a masters degree and want my son to have whatever educational opportunities he wants to use as well. Choice of career path should be for everyone, and many, many times that depends on educational opportunities. That's what I think Ohio will start to see again with Strickland. Blackwell's so-called 65-percent solution will cripple local school district's decision making power.

Ted strickland respects Ohio's working men and women - whatever their socio-economic position.
He merely wants everyone to have opportunities which have not been available - so that those who wish for and who have the ability - will be able to attend the colleges and universities in Ohio.
All that his opponent's "spin" has done - is further clarify the position Ted strickland has taken - i.e. more opportunites for more Ohioans - for higher education - if they want it - now - or in the future. Ted Strickland is proud of his familyy - each member and each craft or profession they accomplish is lauded - in his speeches - and readily obvious in the light in his eyes - when he speaks - at gatherings - large and small.
Perhaps, those who speak of the "faux pas" - are the ones who look "down" - at "honorable labor".
OOPS!

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

My father worked as a laborer and wanted better for me than he had for himself so he insisted I go to college. Anyone in a middle class or working class family has a similar story. That is all Strickland meant and I think we all know it is not demeaning.

What is blatently clear is that Blackwell's campaign cant win on the issues so they have to grasp at straws.

I am sure that the liberals reading this blog will see this as more evidence that "wRong wing FishwRap" reporters are nothing more than stenographers for the Republicans.
