Strickland rips into standardized tests

"The Bible says 'Let not the world squeeze you into its mold,'" Strickland said, noting that Ohio schools currently treat every student too much alike.

"None of us would want to be judged on a single test," Strickland said of standardized testing, presumably referring to Ohio's proficiency tests used to grade schools and advance students to upper grades.

Blackwell countered that some of Strickland's ideas amounted to treating schoolchildren inequitably. "No more soft bigotry of low expectations," he said.

Strickland called Blackwell's statement "a red herring," saying he won't throw away educational standards for young black men.

Cut scores on OGTs, Charter Schools exempted from Ohio proficiency, and "completion" certificates given to seniors instead of h.s. diplomas are just a few examples of high expectations?

you know - i have been sturggling with this issues of standardized tests.
i have 4 kids with widely varying iq s. i don't understand how my kid with a low average iq is expected to turn out the same kind of work and academic accomplishments as my son with a very high average iq.
the kids harmed are the ones who can't meet the expectations of the high average bar do to no fault of their own.
i have often wondered, is my low average iq child expected to work on school work 16 hours a day to be able to perform up to par.
i think differing intellects is the last bastion of discrimination. we expect everyone to conform and perform at same average level -whether they are on the very low end or the very high end
traditional schooling sets my low average child up for low self esteem, failure and lack of accomplishments.

I read low expectation from a man and woman who think "paper plantation" certificates and charter schools are raising standards?

What skills are they learning here?
