'A magical moment in Ohio history'
Ken Blackwell, while praising his wife, Rosa's, achievements as superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, said, "This is a magical moment in Ohio history."
Blackwell, as he closed, praised Rosa Blackwell for bringing the city school district in so-called "academic watch" up to the state Department of Education standard of "continuous improvement."
"She's done that by focusing on the child," Blackwell proclaimed proudly and confidently.
He said that the Cincinnati schools have pursued bold and innovative initiatives. They also are sending dollars into the classroom, not the bureaucracy, Blackwell said of the Cincinnati schools under his wife's leadership.
"That's where the magic is," he said.

What about the kids she graduated without diplomas? What was the program called?
That mansion has somewhat a delusional effect on its inhabitants so they will fit in just fine there just like all the other Aristocrats.
Magical moment for whom?
Give me break! Those proficiency tests are nothing but a scam. How many people know about the number of "consulting groups" that offered expensive "contracts" to school districts to "help prepare" the students for the upcoming tests.
The test "examples" were give away answers for the upcoming proficiency questions. Every public teacher in Ohio knows about this scam.
Ms. Blackwell, I'm sorry but you are very very wrong here to declare this a historical moment.
It is historical, alright, but I wouldn't say it had anything to do with success.
Shame.
I find this quite humorous being a mom who spend two months preparing my sons for the proficiency on line at night helping them answer example questions from a sample test. Did they understand? NO, but they learned how to memorize.
I understand more clearly the scam of deceit in proficiency standards.

Both you and the teacher should have been teaching them how to look at a question, go back into knowledge they have and then apply the knowledge to answer a question.
kind of like all of us do in our daily lives
It is true that CPS has increased from “academic watch” to “continuous improvement". However, should Rosa receive all of the praises? She has been out of the classroom for over a decade. She has not taught a lesson in years to students. What about the teachers in the classrooms day in and day out teaching to the test in extreme HOT conditions, while Rosa is in her air conditioning office? What about the parents that ensure their children come to school daily to prepare for state test? If you are attempting to gain votes by praising Rosa, you just lost one. You seem to have forgotten that it is the parents and teachers that educate students and not your wife.
Oh Ken - shabby bit of grandstanding!
Dragging out Rosa - was not a good idea.
Perhaps, you should have spent some quality time back home - before you trumpeted the big success - or did you really think you could manipulate CPS's results - like the elections?
Families are fleeing the City of Cincinnati - and CPS!
Knowledge is neither tangible nor magical. It is something acquired through various processes very personal to each and every individual person.
True assessment of learning should measure multiple forms of intelligence but this is only my opinion. (And another old-fashion educator like myself.)

Apparently your and your sons teachers don't know how to teach.
Maybe the proficiencies only work for some but not all. Isn;t this why we have charter schools?
