Freedom Center starts the shmoozing
The Rev. Jesse Jackson will be the star attraction Sept. 18 when the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus hosts a reception at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. TaKeysha Sheppard Cheney, executive director of the caucus, said the lawmakers want to draw public attention to the Freedom Center.
"We have been wanting to have an event there for some time," she said.
She said the event is not related to the center's quest for public funding to cover its deficits. State Rep. Tyrone Yates, D/Evanston/East Walnut Hills, who is also an officer of the caucus, recently asked for nearly $3 million out of this year's state building budget for the center. He also called for the state to come up with $10 million over five years for operating expenses.

When the decision was made to build this thing. All you heard was they would never need public dollars to support it. If it can't be self supporting it should be closed.
Didnt Chabot vote against funding it?
can someone tell e what's wrong with supporting a useum dedicated to the freedom of americans? i really dpon't get the oppositio - what a worthwhile cause for culture, education and enlightement.
is this a racist issue causing the opposition.
Anon 8:15. Yes, Chabot voted against funding it. We could have received Federal dollars for this, but Chabot's NO vote is the reason the Freedom Center needs money now.
Had enough? Vote for Cranley in 2006. In 2000, Cranley called Steve Chabot a "national disgrace" for voting against the Freedom Center. After six more years of Chabot, Cincinnati itself is a national disgrace.
This center is a must for Cincinnati as our city was a major link in the underground railroad.
If we can spend billions in iraq then we can support a landmark !

The event on 18 September is not connected to my efforts to try to raise more money for the Freedom Center.
The event will have the parallel effect of re-introducing the Freedom Center to the Members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus and its invitees and the general public.
We have a lot of leadership work to do, financially and programmarically to get the Freedom Center on track and I felt an obligation to speak up.
programmatically
Rick, many museums have their niche. At its most basic, focusing on contemporary art or historic artificats is a niche. The Freedom Center's foray into issues dealing with Freedom (inherent in its name) is a worthy cause and very deserving of the potentially high valued land that it occupies. In fact, long term what that center could bring with proper funding a difficult to duplicate cultural, residential/commercial synthesis.
Ma! Ma! Where's my pa?(Asked by Jackson's love child) Gone to the Freddom Center! Ha ha ha!
