Jail still costs $225 million

A new, 1,800-bed Hamilton County jail won’t cost any more than originally proposed.

That was the message Commissioners Phil Heimlich (right) and Pat DeWine were given today by the consulting company Hamilton County hired.

Heimlich and DeWine were given a separate presentation by the consultant – resulting in the presentation not being subject to Ohio’s public meetings laws – who told them the jail would cost about $225 million.

That was the price given in January by another county-hired consultant.

But because that original estimate was at least 10 months old, commissioners wanted an update on the cost.

The consultants who gave today’s presentation looked at the current price of building material, construction cost, borrowing, inflation and other considerations needed to erect and finance a new jail compared to the prices on which the January consultant’s report was based.

That number is important because Heimlich has proposed a 20-year quarter-cent sales tax increase in Hamilton County to fund a $225 million jail.

DeWine has said he would support such an increase, but not for 20 years.

The two commissioners are expected to arrive at some compromise on the length of a sales tax increase before Thursday – the deadline for commissioners to place ballot issues before voters in the Nov. 7 election.

Commissioner Todd Portune, (at left in photo) a Democrat, knew nothing about today’s presentations by the consultants, his aide said.

Meanwhile, Heimlich's is due to be feted at yet another fundraiser hosted by Crystal Faulkner, the allegedly independent chair of the new jail task farce, I mean, force.

The Enquirer ran an August 4 op-ed by Faulkner, but neglected to identify her as a member of Team Heimlich. So the Dean has been trying to get an answer from Enquirer editors Dave Wells and Tom Callinan why her affiliation with the Heimlich campaign wasn't disclosed in the op-ed. Neither Wells nor Callinan have replied.

If that's not enough, Crystal Faulkner's son works for Heimlich's re-election campaign, as Kevin Osborne reported in CityBeat.

This is getting riper every day.

Bad link on anon 1:26 post. Here's the working link:

Kimball Perry's article raises the issue of Heimlich & DeWine taking separate meetings and thereby avoiding public records reporting. But there's no indication if Perry asked the two commissioners why the meetings were conducted in a manner that avoided public scrutiny.

Then in the last sentence, Perry's mention of Portune makes it sound as if Portune was out to lunch rather than the truth, which was that the other two commissioners made sure he didn't participate.

Such manipulations by the renegade Republicans, Heimlich & DeWine - who make a habit of keeping secrets from their colleagues, the public, and the media - might be a matter of urgency for some reporters. But this is the bizarro world of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Is the Enquirer on the take or - and here's the horrible alternative - do they report the news like this because it's the best they can do?

Has anyone notice how the wRong wingnut fishwrap has disabled the ability to comment on their propaganda published in elephant dung ink ?

Anon 4:45,

Obviously the Fishwrap knew that the Democrats would be extremely fired up after the bus tour. Therefore, they had to disable commenting for three days to let the Republicans catch up.

And have you ever noticed that "Enquirer" has 2 Rs and 0 Ds in the name? That's a dead giveaway to their political leanings.

And we cannot forget Gannett. It starts with G, the same letter as the Repugnicants' nickname, GOP.

Maybe GOP really means "Gannett's Our Paper."

Ill Phil and his pooch Pat deserve should be ejected
from office. They are NOT public servants. They serve
corporate masters. They do not operate the HC Commission as it legally and ethically should be (oops- forgot that members of the Republic Party
are forbidden by Mehlman, Cheney and Rove to be ethical...)
Ask the banks and contractors and private staffing "services" what they think of the longer, more expensive funding arrangement pushed by Ill Phil.
This is beyond corruption and incompetence. It is
pure greed and deception. AWAY with these two!
