Dusty: You botched it

It turns out Hamilton County residents won’t save as much on a proposed property tax rollback as previously announced.

Auditor Dusty Rhodes sent commissioners a letter late Wednesday noting their calculations on what the owner of a $100,000 house would save on a property tax rollback was wrong – and he criticized them for doing work he insists only his office can correctly do.

Earlier this week, commissioners voted to place on the fall ballot a proposal to increase Hamilton County’s 6.5 percent sales tax by a quarter-cent for 10 years. That is planned to pay for a new 1,800-bed, $225 million jail and roll back property taxes by a total of $30 million for three years.

Hamilton County administrative staff provided a memo that provided a “very rough estimate” to the owner of a $100,000 house for the three years of the rollback – a total $49.59.
Rhodes’ letter noted the actual savings will be $44.83.

That number also can’t be guaranteed, Rhodes noted, because Ohio law mandates that his office do a property re-evaluation in 2009 that could alter the calculation for the final year the rollback will be in effect if voters adopt it.

Rhodes’ also chided commissioners and county staff for releasing the original number, suggesting they aren’t as qualified as Auditor employees to make those calculations.

“The first problem with other offices attempting to provide estimates or make these calculations is that they are often unaware of the complexities of state law or recent changes with which our staff works on a daily basis,” Rhodes wrote.

“The second problem is that inaccurate or exaggerated numbers undermine the very credibility so necessary to inform taxpayers as to higher or lower levels of taxation.”

Today is the deadline to place issues on the Nov. 7 ballot.

Is this story going to appear in print Kimball, or isn't it 'important' enough to merit precious space in your lilliputian newspaper? Or might printing this story risk making Heimlich look a bigger fool than he already does?

Typical illiterate rants from the Bold Idiot. Anyone who knows basic grammar can read that headline and know it's Rhodes telling someone else they screwed up. Yes, the Enquirer is biased. Yes, Perry's a hack who couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. Yes the Republican Commissioners are too stupid to add up some numbers. Yes the jail tax is regressive, aimed at the poor, and unnecessary. But Bold Idiot needs to learn when not to cry wolf, or else nobody will take him seriously...oh, too late, never mind.

Sounds like old "Trusty Dusty" feelings were hurt, because he wasn't consulted as the expert on property evaluations.

The commissioners stated that the savings was a "very rough estimate". The difference is only 5 bucks. Big Whoop!

Where in either newspaper's story does it say that the incorrect Commissioner's numbers were "a very rough estimate"? Good luck finding it. It's not there. What they provided were billed as "to the penny" numbers which, of course, were wrong and exaggerated
the tax relief - and were prepared by an individual they recently hired and not by the independent
Auditor.

To Dan Klepal & Kimball Perry:

From your Enquirer article today re: the Banks project:

Heimlich went on the trip with Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and a few members of the Banks Working Group - a five-member board that will recommend a master developer. That recommendation must be ratified by Hamilton County commissioners and Cincinnati City Council. The group flew to Atlanta on Bob Castellini's private jet. Castellini owns the Cincinnati Reds and is chairman of the Banks Working Group.

From this August 18 item by Kevin Osborne on CityBeat's blog:

Two members of the Banks Working Group will meet Sept. 7 with the CEO who leads the company that’s the preferred developer to build the multimillion-dollar Banks riverfront project...The event, however, isn’t an official meeting at the county’s administrative building or other public location. Rather, it’s a private fund-raiser at an Indian Hill mansion that those people are hosting for Hamilton County Commissioner Phil Heimlich, a Republican seeking re-election. Reds owner Bob Castellini and local developer Robert Rhein, who were appointed to the Banks Working Group by county officials, are on the fund-raiser’s host committee along with John Barrett, CEO of the Western & Southern Financial Group.

In your article today, why didn't you acknowledge that Bob Castellini is part of Commissioner Heimlich's re-election campaign?

Was that another oversight, like the Enquirer running articles about Crystal Faulkner's jail committee and never mentioning that she hosts fundraisers for Heimlich every other minute?

Looking forward to your reply, not that you ever answer any of your readers on the blog.

Call Nate Noy and tell him how shameful his filings are! His phone number is 513-259-7782 (campaign phone, so this doesn't get blocked) Tell him how he's turning the Ohio Elections Commission into a mockery!

Adovocate, Michael Earl Patton, has been trying unsuccessfully to find if the County's books for Hamilton County have been balanced since 2003.

Did he find it?

"I couldn't as of this morning, 8/24/06. In other words, the auditor hasn't balanced the county's books since 2003."

What is this true? Has Dusty Rhodes forgotten to balance the books in Hamilton County? Is this why the County is being investigated for mis-spending 1 biliion dollars?

Letter to: Hamilton County Commissioners, Auditor, Manager,
and members of the Public Concern

Recent revalations have recently come to light that the county auditor has not balanced the book's since 2003.

Is this true?

Sincerely,

Peter Deane

You people are the real hacks...

Take this quote, for example:

"In your article today, why didn't you acknowledge that Bob Castellini is part of Commissioner Heimlich's re-election campaign?

Was that another oversight, like the Enquirer running articles about Crystal Faulkner's jail committee and never mentioning that she hosts fundraisers for Heimlich every other minute?"

Now for the facts:

1) I am a volunteer for the Heimlich Campaign and Bob Castellini has NOTHING to do with the campaign.

2) Crystal Faulkner hosted one single fundraiser because the other venue fell through at the last minute. And she was just as eager to learn more about Phil as the other 200 guests who packed her house.

She is a very fair-minded and objective woman and to see her maligned by morons who have never met her is typical of the goofballs that do nothing except whine.

Instead of nitpicking the jail plan, why don't you try offering one of your own?

Sincerely,

Mark Feltner
Hyde Park

Mark Feltner: Bob Castellini has NOTHING to do with the campaign.

From CityBeat item: Reds owner Bob Castellini and local developer Robert Rhein, who were appointed to the Banks Working Group by county officials, are on the (Heimlich) fund-raiser’s host committee

Feltner:Crystal Faulkner hosted one single fundraiser

Wrong. She hosted the Heimlich fundraiser at her home and she's also on on the host committee for the big Indian Hill Heimlich fundraiser above, also reported in the same CityBeat item.

Also Faulkner's son works for Heimlich's campaign.

Mr. Feltner, why not read the material before you post? Faulkner's a big girl and she knows the rules. She broke them and now her reputation will suffer the consequences.

Public officials and private citizens with pending government business have the obligation to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. If Faulkner, Castellini, Rhein, Heimlich, and the rest don't want to look like they're selling government favors for campaign contributions, there's a simple solution: don't host fundraisers for Heimlich's campaign.

When Heimlich and his cronies conduct government business this way, the public will draw its own conclusions.

In response to "Peter Deane" the Auditor has been unable to issue a Comprehensive Financial Report (CAFR) for Hamilton County 2004 and 2005 - for the first time since he has been Auditor - BECAUSE of the pending audit of the Welfare Department. There is no way a CAFR can be issued when there is the very real possibility of an large, unknown obligation. Before the present County Auditor took office, Hamilton County had never issued a CAFR.

...an large, unknown obligation.

Like maybe up to $1 billion in misappropirations at Jobs & Family Services, a story the Enquirer can't seem to report?

Hey Suzanne Burke, where'd you go?
