The 2nd District: all about running

Howard Wilkinson reports:

Democratic congressional candidate Victoria Wulsin, as part of a push to get incumbent Republican Jean Schmidt to commit to a series of debates, challenged the congresswoman in her own sport Monday, suggesting they take each on in a 5-K charity race next month.

“If she whips me in a foot race, then I want to totally whip her in the debates,’’ said Wulsin, who said she has run in a 10-K race and crossed the finish line.

Schmidt, a marathoner who runs at least six miles a day, declined the 5-K, a run of a little over three miles, and upped the ante – challenging Wulsin to run with her in a half-marathon later this month in Morrow, a run of about 13 miles.

Barry Bennett, Schmidt’s chief of staff, said the 2nd District congresswoman can’t run in the Sept. 10 Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, a charity event raising money for breast cancer research, because she will be running 20 miles that day to train for an upcoming Columbus marathon.

He said Schmidt suggested Wulsin enter the half-marathon event in Morrow Schmidt will be running in on Aug. 27.

The Wulsin campaign passed on that suggestion.

“Vic will be running to end breast cancer in the 5-K while Jean Schmidt is out training for a marathon,’’ said Ady Barkin, communications director for the Wulsin campaign.

The Wulsin campaign issued the challenge to call attention to their earlier demand for public debates in all of the 2nd Congressional District’s seven counties – a proposal that the Schmidt campaign says is impractical.

Bennett said he expects that there will be “several” debates between the two in October, after Congress has gone into recess.

No need to debate the wRong wingnut whacko !

The fact that she demonstrates the importance of selfish training instead of drawing attention to the health of women speaks volumes to the voters.

How could a marathon in Columbus be more important than a community event for all women ??

Typical culture of corruption and Darwinism politics !!

If you can't run a marathon for self actualization, you probably deserve cancer ?

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRATIC 2006

What is Schmidt so afraid of? If you're convinced you're right, invite Wulsin to a debate, anywhere, anytime.

I would never vote for someone who was too chicken to debate.

She's not scared, just wise. Tell me why it makes sense to debate Wulsin in front of 20 people and waste money and time? No one will show up to these debates, especially in the eastern counties, nor will they be covered by the media. The debate in October on the news will draw twice the amount of viewers than 7 would. Wulsin's just whining because she's following the national parties act for '06. Also before you bad mouth the Columbus Marathon, I think you should check to see what charity the proceeds go to.

Bold face annoying guy, if you could complete a 5k I'd be very surprised, you're probably a hairy old liberal that spends all of their time on the computer communicating to a population of about 50 voters worthless sayings that have no factual basis. This once again proves my point of how to annoy a Liberal: Work, Succeed, and Be Happy.

In the UK the phrase "stand for office" is used rather than the tiresome "run for office," that we use here in the USA.

Why don't the two athletically adept ladies agree that "standing" for office and debating/discussing issues is the better approach?

Nevermind....it wouldn't be a very interesting photo op for Jason Geil and his cohorts to cover an event where two middle-aged women just stood around in their Ann Klein suits and fake pearls and talked.

How about a "less filling"/"tastes great" session.......an arm wrestle........a challenge at the local bowling alley...

I think you should ask a contingent of local news photographers what they think.

Even if there were only twenty people present which given the current climate I would think that there would be a great deal more in attendance than that, but if there were a small number of attendees it would still be worth it I would think. If all I have to rely on is her record thus far in Congress than I would never vote for her. As far Victoria is concerned a debate would benefit her as it puts her on the record
on the various issues. How are the voters supposed to be informed? The age of election by soundbite should be over...that is what got us the administration that we have now.

Maybe Vic will discuss her pro abortion stance or better yet her pro gay marriage position. She seems to have left those positions off of her web site. Could it be that the 2nd Congressional is against killing babies. Come on Vic, tell us about killing babies, your supposed to be a doctor. You know, one of those people who should be saving lives not taking lives.

I wonder if "Collin" is the same Collin Rink who has been such an-Anti-Schmidt's-Opponent blogger the past year. Hackett is awful! McEwen is awful! Now, it's Wulsin is awful!

Either way, I wonder how he would feel about someone who flip-flopped on the gun issue, which is so near and dear to his heart. What would he think of someone who was anti-gun to please her voters in a township, then she flip-flopped to curry favor with Larry Householder and other corrupt Repugnicants in Columbus?

Even more, what would he say if that Flip-Flopper were none other than Jean Schmidt?

Vic keeps crying because she couldn't get attention riding her bike naked to work.

She wouldn't debate Bob McEwen. She wouldn't debate Paul Hackett in Clermont, Warren or Hamilton Counties. She wouldn't debate me. And now she won't debate Vic Wulsin or Nate Noy.

Regardless of where any candidate stands on any issue, the members of the voting public should have the right to hear what their elected officials have to say. She sure knows how to show up at fundraisers. She sure knows how to vote the party line in a blind and reckless fashion.

I challenged Jean Schmidt to a debate dozens of times during the last year. She ignored me just like she ignored Bob McEwen and half of the Republican Party of Southern Ohio. She ignores people because she doesn't think that she is accountable to them.

Let's send a message to Washington that just because somebody is elected to office once doesn't mean that they get to stay there forever. Jean, you have to earn it. And right now, by hiding from the people who voted for you in the first place, you are not earning anybody's respect; especially the more than 20,000 Republicans who voted against you earlier this year.

person who posts in bold/italics. Please stop...I am a democrat who frankly is tired of reading your responses...you are hurting our cause!

Parker, She debated McEwen on 700WLW and also on TV. She debated Hackett on TV also. Parker, I am afraid you never won the primary in either election so no debate for you. Schmidt has held over 20 town hall meetings over the past 12 months in every county and open to the public, even democrats were welcomed. No one can say they havn't had a chance to meet and discuss issues with Schmidt. I heard Wulsin on the Adams County radio discussing making air conditioning illegal and something about eating plastic plates. That would make for a great debate.

Since one of Jean's few Republican supporters has chosen to address me... (Obviously not one of the more than 20,000 Republicans who voted against her earlier this year)..

First and foremost, I would like to say that I am proud to be a Democrat. Even though we live in the most conservative Congressional district in Ohio. There is a wide range of beliefs within the Democratic party. And the Democratic Party is open to all people. And the Democrats of the future need to be willing to work with Republicans to solve America's problems. The days of division in America are over.

Secondly, Jean Schmidt has refused numerous debates and public forums with multiple candidates on multiple occasions. Paul Hackett challenged her to debates in all seven counties. She only appeared in two; Brown and Adams. I publicly challenged Jean Schmidt to debate her positions on the Economy, Healthcare and the War in Iraq. I tried to meet her in a public forum in Hamilton, Clermont and Warren Counties - Ignored... I even setup a webpage to create a permanent announcement. And I did delete it immediately after I lost the primary to Doctor Wulsin.

Thirdly, Bob McEwen did everything possible to get to hold a debate against Jean Schmidt and was repeatedly ignored. Just ask the Republicans who live in Anderson Township. The Republicans in Anderson Township were even considering inviting the woman who portrayed Jean on Saturday Night Live to take her place in a Hamilton County debate.

Finally, she is postponing again until October. What is it that she is so determined to hide from the almost 650,000 people who live in our Congresional District?

The person who made the comments about the person who continuously posts in bold... You are correct. That person is hurting the Democratic cause with their negative remarks. I know there is positive in that person somewhere. I only hope that they can find it and present a positive Democratic message in the near future.

As for the crazy comments that the Jean Schmidt supporter keeps posting about Doctor Wulsin. Your comments are taken out of context and are highly exaggerated. Anybody with any sense can see that. Here's my question... What is it that Jean Schmidt has done and what does she have to offer that will heal our nation? What are her accomplishments relative to healthcare, the economy and the war? Any member of Congress should be able to answer these questions with relative ease. The number one job of a member of Congress is to improve the lives of others.

Here's another question... In last Sunday's New Watchman, there was an opinion column where Jean Schmidt was interviewed about her position on the shipping in of nuclear waste into Pike County from all over the United States of America. Amazingly, Jean would not state her position. She said that she would have to see the piece of legislation in it's entirety. Jean Schmidt, what is your position on this issue. This is not an issue of economic development; it is an issue of the dumping of nuclear waste in Southern Ohio.

Jean, my position is that, although I support the plant as a number one employer in my county, we will NEVER have OTHER PEOPLE'S NUCLEAR WASTE shipped into our backyard. Not in your backyard! Not in ours! Jean, I am encouraging you to make public your position on this important issue before this election comes to an end. This is a question that Doctor Wulsin should be asking you. Maybe the Cincinnati Enquirer would like to take the time to read the column. Maybe they should be asking you. Jean, what is your position on the dumping of nuclear waste from other states in Southern Ohio?

Jim Parker
Former Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District - 2005 & 2006

Collin, you have lost all credibility because of your relationship with Jean Schmidt (as if the "Rink Report" hadn't already done that). Collin, in the next issue of the Rink Report, why don't you include about how you faxed a fake press release from staples (without paying) during the last Republican primary. While you're at it, tell about how you stalked Bob McEwen in Madiera, hiding in your car in the parking lot at Ferraris.

I will explain that I am a moderate, yet I lean toward the Democratic party. However I am curious why neither candidtate or yourself Mr. Parker, are showing any interest in using the Pike County facility to recycle the nuclear waste? This would allow for job creation in Pike County that would also be an economic boost for the region. That would not only benefit the region but the nation as a 55 gallon barrel of nuclear waste would be reduced to around 9 gallons of waste?

This is something the country needs, as well as the region.

As someone who works in the power industry nuclear will soon be the perfered method of generation. If either of the candidates could push this and see of the Department of Energy would support it then it could put Southern Ohio ahead of the curve in nuclear waste handling.

Unfortunately you will not stop the demand for energy, however we can find alternatives to the fossil fuels we use. Whatever region does first will be in control of the industry.

Would love to know more about Vic Wulsin... I tried to schedule her for an interview but she never gets back to me.

How can I support someone that is afraid of me, I don't know why Vic doesn't trust me, I'm a Democrat that would love to see Schmidt lose.

Vic, if you read this, my email is peterdeane@cinci.rr.com. Would like to set up that interview.

Otherwise, you are on your own.

I WANT TO SEEM IMPORTANT!!! Please look at me and my post!

You all really need to not take this stuff so stinking seriously. There is no physical way that Wulsin can win. The district is one of the most conservative in the country. She has won enough races that she's earned her seat and will have it as long as she wants it.

All of you need to relax and go play some golf or chess. Perhaps a nice glass of wine and a walk with an old chum would make you feel better.

The real shame here is that there are people who are so entrenched in ideology that they will overlook the obvious flaws of any candidate. No candidate deserves nor should want such blind loyalty. It will cosy us all in the future as it is costing us now. As the Middle East further declines into a void of violence and needless bloodshed and Iraq has warped into a civil war and Afganistan has almost returned to pre US invasion days with the opium fields overflowing...all aided by an administration that is limited to say the least. All we can talk about is gay marriage and abortion both of which are moral issues and clearly we are in no position to legislate morality if so then we would not have racism, sexism and other isms in this nation and in this county.

Vic wasn't trying to get Schmidt to debate. She challenged Schmidt to run in the Susan G Komen event to trap Schmidt. Susan G Komen has helped fund Cincinnati Planned Parenthood and their abortion services along with Planned Parenthood operations all over the country. Had Schmidt paid to enter the race Wulsin would claim Schmidt helped fund Planned Parenthood. We all know Schmidt is very pro-life and Wulsin is very pro-abortion. Nice try Vic, but you lose again.

The reason Liberalism won't work in the Second District is because most residents of the Second District are lockstep followers who prefer to let some shouting talking-head do their decision-making for them.

If the Second District did an ounce of independent research, they wouldn't be sending such radical right-wing nutjobs to Congress.

Mr. Weiser - in the interest of accuracy in media, as if that ever meant anything at your paper, the name of Wulsin's communications director is Ady BARKAN,
not Barkin. Thanks for keeping this in mind if you ever decide to cover Wulsin with any fairness and accuracy.
Oh, another correction, this time for the shill in DC, Rulon. When "quoting" Wulsin about the average voter's ability to buy a new car in the price range of the E-85 (capable...) SUV that the current OH-2 rep bought, Wulsin said FEW could afford it, not "none" could afford it. So Rulon turns an accurate comment into an OH-2 voter-perceived insult. Malia has an agenda? Oh, how could I even imagine that? Pitiful paper....
