Cranley pledges to support voting rights

Today, Democrat John Cranley signed a pledge to the people of the 1st Congressional District that he would fight for voting rights.

Cranley, who is running against Republican Rep. Steve Chabot, was joined by civil rights leader Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., and former vice mayor Alicia Reece at a news event to commemorate the signing of his pledge.

Cranley explained that the pledge is more than a promise to support the Voting Rights Act, which is pending in Congress - as stated in yesterday's blog entry. It's to stand up against anything that hurts people's voting rights, such as a bill supported by Chabot that bars nonprofits from getting federal funding if they engage in voter education or get-out-the vote drives.

Here is the text of his latest pledge:
Whereas, the right to vote is a hallmark of American freedom; and

Whereas, the right to vote has not always been readily available to all Americans; and

Whereas, recent elections and actions by Congress have revealed that there are still forces within our country who will go to considerable lengths to make it more difficult for some Americans to exercise the right to vote; and

Whereas, every branch of government, and especially the United States Congress, should take whatever steps necessary to ensure that no American will ever be unfairly denied the right to cast a vote, and whereas Congress should take steps to prevent anyone from being discouraged from voting;

Therefore, I hereby proclaim that as an elected official, I will continue to work to uphold the precious right to vote and remove any and all barriers intended to discourage Americans from exercising that right; and

Further proclaim that, upon election to the United States House of Representatives, I will always vote to uphold the Voting Rights Act and support efforts to make it easier for Americans to take full advantage of the right to vote.

Proclaimed today, on the Seventh Day of July, 2006 by:

John Cranley, Candidate for the United States House of Representatives from Ohio's First District.

Now, about all those pledges...

“There will be more,” Cranley said Friday. “I’ll be signing a number of pledges during this campaign so that people know exactly, on specific issues, how to hold me accountable.”

There you go, Ms. Rulon. More fodder for your bitching sessions about how someone on the campaign trail is making promises. Imagine that!

How about makng sure that all votes are counted? Kerry/Edwards broke their pledge and allowed uncle Ken Blackwell to steal the 2004 election in Ohio.

When will Tom Callinan and Carl Weisel let us know why they haven´tinvestigated the overwhelming evidence that tens of thousand of African American voters were disenfranchised?

The BBC reported it, Congressman John Conyers reported it, the Free Press reported it, the Cincinnati Beacon reported it and the Civil Rights Commission reported it.

Carl said they asked people who know, so who did you ask???

Not only is this a Republican rag, but you are traitors to your profession and your country.
Shame on you!!!

Cranley's website shows he has been on this for awhile.

The real question is why would anyone want to vote for Chabot when he votes against the constitution?

Chabot votes to gag nonprofits & take away voter rights - 2/22/2006

"For Immediate Release:
February 22, 2006
CHABOT DEFENDS HIS VOTES TO GAG NONPROFITS & TAKE AWAY VOTER RIGHTS

Cincinnati, Ohio (OH-1) -- At taxpayer expense Steve Chabot held a short “townhall” meeting at the Urban League on the Voting Rights Act that limited citizen participation to a mere forty minutes, leaving about a dozen citizens with unanswered questions.

Citizens were very concerned about Chabot overseeing the strengthening of the Voting Rights Act when just last October of 2005 Chabot defied the National Urban League, NAACP, The National Voting Rights Institute, U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops and hundreds of organizations by voting to take away voting rights and gag nonprofits when he voted for House Amendment 596 to H.R. 1461.

Chabot defended his votes to prohibit nonprofit grantees from using their own funds to encourage citizens to exercise their rights to vote, by saying that “all money is fungible” even though federal law already restricts housing grants to only be spent on housing purposes.

Chabot’s Anti-Voter Rights & Nonprofit Gag Provision

Chabot voted to disqualify nonprofits from an affordable housing fund if they, or an affiliated organization, have engaged in any one of the following in the preceding 12 months or while applying for the funds:
-- All nonpartisan voter activities
-- Voter registration
-- Voter identification
-- Get-out-the vote
-- Public education & grassroots issue advocacy

“Under this bill, if you are a religious organization, and you maintain an elderly housing project, which are built with these funds, you cannot get a bus to take people to vote.” -- Rep. Barney Frank (D) who tried to take-out the anti-voter rights provisions, but was defeated by Chabot

-- Chabot is a member of the group, the Republican Study Committee, who crafted the anti-voter rights and nonprofit gag provision

-- Chabot voted for amendment that put the anti-voter rights and nonprofit gag provision into bill [H.AMDT.596, Y-210, N-205, 10/26/05]

-- Chabot voted against motion to strip anti-voter rights and nonprofit gag portions from the bill [Motion to recommit with instructions, Y-200, N-220, 10/26/05]

-- Chabot voted for final bill with anti-voter provisions [H.R. 1461 – Federal Housing Reform Act of 2005, Y-330, N-90, 10/26/05]

Bill Status
Chabot’s plan passed in the House & is now being considered in the Senate.

OMB Watch - Group has comprehensive listings of testimony before congress, letters signed by hundreds of organizations opposing the measure and education on the effects of the gag.

Damn!

I hope the Enquirer read the post before me. The Enquirer blog staff is ridiculous. They need to shuffle up their staff. It's simply not credible anymore.

First Chiquita, now this crap for Chabot. I understand if you guys are going to endorse him again. But is campaiging on his behalf really ethical?

Even California newspapers are reporting on the shameful partisan voter suppression laws passed by Republican legislators.

From the Sacramento Bee:

http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/columns/schrag/story/14274746p-15084490c.html

"Given laws recently passed by GOP-controlled legislatures in Ohio and Georgia that effectively discourage or block voters -- minorities especially -- likely to cast ballots for Democrats, the fears about rigged elections are not out of line."

Two things:
Yay! for strengthening the Voting Rights Act. Go Chabot. Just a thought, if you are too STUPID to figure out our system of voting, then we don't need you to muck up the system...

Secondly, it IS time to let the hammer down on non-profits funding and spending. They are our single biggest source of corruption when it comes to the waste of tax dollars. For just one example, refer to the losers and thieves in Cincinnati Empowerment Corp.

Cranley will fall to the great and powerful Chabot.

Questions, class?

You want to look at non-profits, fine. But first, let's take a look at churches. They are an enormous source of corruption and skate on their tax exempt status while supporting hate-mongers like Blackwell and Bush.

It is true that Chabothead is rich and powerful.

But his rich and powerful friends are going down one by one like Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff. DeLay has raised Chabothead hundreds of thousands of dollars and Chabothead has voted to erode House ethics rules to protect his leader DeLay.

Everybody said DeLay was too powerful to be stopped, but his crap has caught with him.

Now Chabothead's crap is catching up to him. At least he can retire a rich man.

Cranley shows up with Steveecia Reese ?!? After what chunky butt Reese and her ilk did to Price Hill and Westwood, Cranley had better leave her in Bond Hill.

chabothead 9:19:

The only back turned on Price Hill and Westwood has been Steve Chabot's.

Chabot has represented both Price Hill and Westood since 1985. For over 20 years Chabot has done nothing for those Westside neighborhoods.

Can anyone name a thing Chabot has done for Price Hill and Westwood in 20 years? Add Bond Hill, Green Township and Bridgetown to the list. Still nothing?

Chabot is a joke. It is time for that blockhead to go.

You are RIGHT !!

After 20 years of service the chabotheads should have a book of favorable items for the no class westside wRong wing nuts !!

But they don't, and I can't even think of one ( that's 1 ) favorable thing the comb-over chabothead has done !!

Pathetic !!
