Big names coming to Cincinnati - UPDATED
The race for Cincinnati's 1st Congressional District seat in the U.S. House heats up next week as the candidates each host fund raisers here featuring well-known personalities.
Democrat John Cranley will kick off the week with a lunch on Monday with former President Clinton campaign strategist James Carville, who appears on CNN's The Situation Room.
Considering that Carville has been credited with helping Clinton overcome the odds to win election in 1992 over the first President Bush, it'll be interesting to see what kind of campaign advice he passes on to Cranley.
Monday's luncheon will be held at The Vernon Manor Hotel at 12:30 p.m. for $150 a head. Those willing to fork over $500 are invited to a private question and answer reception with Carville at 1:30 p.m. where they'll also get to take a picture with the famed strategist.
Then, later in the week, Cranley's opponent in the race - incumbent Rep. Steve Chabot, a Westwood Republican - will bring out the big guns. According to an invitation obtained by the Enquirer, Chabot will host First Lady Laura Bush for a breakfast fund raiser on Friday, Aug. 4.
The breakfast will be held at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal - the same place where President Bush made his case for invading Iraq during a nationally televised address nearly four years ago.
The cost to attend the Laura Bush event wasn’t immediately available, although the invite says there will be a photo opportunity with the First Lady.

What's the matter Steve, couldn't get W himself to show??
"the same place where President Bush" LIED! "He was lying through his teeth while he made his bogus case for invading Iraq during a nationally televised address nearly four years ago."
International election observer Bob Fitrakis will be exposing how Ken Blackwell stole the 2004 election in Ohio for the GOP. Come and hear the evidence and judge for yourself this Sat. 6pm at 205 W. McMillan.
Beauty and the Beast. That Carville has to be the child of siblings. Yoiks!!!
Laura is a great lady !!
To bad she sold her soul for a loser, abuser !!
She could have done remarkable things for education, instead she advocates the privatization of the wRong wingnuts !!
How about those high oil profits in exchange for your high gas costs !!
How about that negative national savings rate !!
I wonder who has our savings ??
(China, oily men)
I hope they die before the repeal of the estate tax !!
We want our money back !!
The breakfast will be held at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal - the same place where President Bush LIED!!!
He made his bogus case for invading Iraq during a nationally televised address nearly four years ago. Where he used information that they knew was false. Impeachment procedings will begin when there is an opposition party.
The meek Laura Bush will fit in nicley with the very un-dynamic Chabot. What a joke - big help my arse!
I am a Democrat who will be spending this weekend with my wife and children. I will be as far away from politics as possible despite the opportunities in Adams, Clermont, Hamilton, Warren, and Scioto Counties... Sounds like some people are going to have a busy weekend...
Mrs. Bush will add some class to Chabot's campaign. Now if only Cranley had some class... Instead he has Washington financial support. But, then again, so does Chabot. What a sorry set of choices. Is this all that American politics has to offer?
Yawn... Same as it ever was...
As for the guy who anonomously posts in bold all over this blog all the time... What a frickin' nutcase... Take that from a fellow Democrat you goon.
Looks like another day John Cranley won't be attending to City Council business. Pat Dewine would be proud.
FROM OHIO'S FIRST BLOG:
http://ohiosfirst.blogspot.com/2006/07/chabot-bush-and-iraq-war-lies-part-i.html
We all know Chabot supports President Bush's policies 90% of the time. What I didn't know is that Chabot supported Bush's Iraq War lies 100% of the time. Here's an amazing story that I still can't believe is true....
Almost a year ago to the day, Rep. Steve Chabot and ten other Republican Congressmen wrote a joint, steamy letter to the Nation Institute (of The Nation political magazine). The letter concerned an award the Nation gave to former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who is the husband of former CIA undercover officer Valerie Plame.
We all know the background of this story, but for those of you who don’t, here’s a quick recap: during the lead up to the Iraq war, Bush wanted evidence Saddam was renewing his nuclear program. He sent U.S. Ambassador Joe Wilson to Africa to see if evidence linking Saddam to nuclear material in Niger was accurate. Wilson came home and said no, there is no credible evidence. However, Bush then used the Niger “connection” as justification for war during his State of the Union speech at the Union Terminal in Cincy. This made Wilson mad, so he went public and told everyone Bush is full of crap. Enter Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, a covert CIA operative. As payback for Wilson telling the truth, Karl Rove/Scooter Libby leaked her undercover status to journalist Robert Novak, who printed it. So the Bush administration disrespected Joe Wilson for telling the truth and destroyed his wife’s career in the CIA which jeopardized her contacts and ultimately the security of the United States. Whew…
Now enter Steve Chabot. On July 22, 2004 Chabot and ten other Congressman wrote a nasty letter to The Nation because the magazine honored Ambassador Joseph Wilson with an award for truth-telling and public service. Chabot didn’t like the fact that Joe Wilson was spoiling Bush’s false case for war. Chabot was outraged. He wanted America to go to war, even if there was no credible reason for doing so.
So what did Chabot’s letter say? In a nutshell, it said the Nation was “snookered” and Wilson was a “liar” and the award to him should be revoked. (Full text):
July 22, 2004
Dear Mr. Hamilton Fish:
You've been snookered and you shouldn't stand for it!
We are referring to the Nation Institute's giving the first Ron Ridenhour Award for Truth-Telling to Ambassador Joe Wilson, who has just been exposed as a liar on, well, pretty much everything.
In the interests of "Truth-Telling," we think you should withdraw Wilson's award so that your organization does not become a laughingstock. While it is doubtful Wilson would agree to give you the $10,000 prize back, maybe you could shame him into donating it to some charity, since it was undoubtedly received under false pretenses. Consider.
The award was given to Wilson for his "raising questions about the Bush Administration's truthfulness, and undermined its claim that it had ample evidence to justify an invasion of Iraq." Specifically, Wilson wrote in a 2003 New York Times op-ed that President Bush had "twisted" intelligence to "exaggerate the Iraqi threat." He allowed that he had been sent to Niger to look into claims that Iraq had tried to buy yellowcake ore from that country. Wilson informed us "It did not take long to conclude that it was highly doubtful that any such transaction had ever taken place."
We now know, of course, that all of Wilson's claims were lies. First, there is the exhaustive British report put out by Lord Butler that concludes, "the statement in President Bush's State of the Union Address of 28 January 2003 that 'The British Government has learned the Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa' was well-founded."
This assessment was backed up by the report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, which stated that Wilson's debriefing provided "some confirmation of foreign government service reporting," in other words, the British were right.
Then there is the claim by Wilson that his wife had nothing to do with his going to Niger on behalf of the CIA, saying "She definitely had not proposed that I make the trip." However, the Senate report quotes from a February 12, 2002 memo from Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, that does promote her husband for the mission, saying "my husband has good relations with both the PM and the former Minister of Mines (not to mention lots of French contacts), both of whom could possibly shed light on this sort of activity."
Finally, Wilson was not truthful when he told the Washington Post that documents about the uranium deal may have been forged because "the dates were wrong and the names were wrong." When asked by the committee staff how he came to such a conclusion when he could not possibly have seen the documents in question, Wilson said he may have "misspoken." We'll say.
As you know, Wilson's fraudulent claims were the basis for many of the most scurrilous attacks on the president and vice president. These attacks continue today. By withdrawing your award you will be not only restoring integrity of the Ron Ridenhour Award for Truth-Telling, but you will also be sending a clear message about the importance of accuracy and fairness in political discourse.
For the sake of your organization and its honor, rescind Ambassador Joe Wilson's award.
Thank you for your consideration.
Cordially,
Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Rep. Joe Wilson, Rep. Steve King, Rep. Michael Burgess, Rep. Randy Neugebauer, Rep. Steve Chabot, Rep. Trent Franks, Rep. Wally Herger, Rep. Cass Ballenger, Rep. Robin Hayes. Rep. Bob Beauprez

Our Congressman who serves on the House International Relations Committee is an idiot.
He knows nothing about foreign policy, national security, or intelligence. He knows nothing about the logic of war, relevance of international law, or the meaning of peace.
At the beginning of this race, I started this blog primarily because I knew OH-01 was going to be a nationally-watched race. I didn’t think Chabot was an idiot; instead, just an ineffective radical Congressman. Now I believe he is both.
The tone of voice, the deceptive use of bits of information, and the overall meaning of his letter to The Nation is ridiculous. Does he really think the American people – and the voters of the First District – will support wars regardless of their meanings? Does he really think that the best way to protect America is by discrediting a career diplomat and CIA operative who stood up for truth? Does he really love President Bush enough to lie for him?!
Not only should Congressman Chabot issue an apology to the National Black Farmers Association for being a jerk to them, but he should apologize to the Nation magazine, U.S. Ambassador Joe Wilson, CIA operative Valerie Plame, and his constituents in the First District.
While John Cranley’s pledges add up, Steve Chabot’s apology list gets longer.
"Laura Bush" coming "again" to Cincinnati?? Wow, bet Chabot's gonna get alot of great political "how to win" advice from Laura. I was at the Ragen Cagen luncheon for Cranley yesterday and Chabot should be shaken in his baby booties about now!
