What Boehner says about Schmidt

House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, fielded on-camera questions from reporters today, and the first one he got came from Capitol News Connection's Chad Pergram, a Greater Cincinnati native who graduated from Miami University.

The topic? Why it was all about Schmidt, of course! Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, that is.

Pergram wanted to know if Boehner was backing Schmidt over former Republican Rep. Bob McEwen in the May 2nd GOP primary election. McEwen left Congress in 1992, shortly after Boehner, who was elected in 1990, joined the House.

Boehner's answer: "Absolutely. She is the incumbent member and I think that she deserves to be re-elected and I think she will be re-elected."

Pergram followed up, asking Boehner if he thinks Schmidt's "cowards cut and run" comment, the endorsement dispute and the latest flap over her inaccurate resume has made her "radioactive."

Boehner: "I think that she’s very popular with her constituents. And if you look at the primary that she won … there were 12 candidates in there and she emerged from that with a very strong vote. And so her ability to turn out her vote, which I think is essential in a primary election, will be demonstrated come May."

Incidentally, Boehner will be headlining a fundraiser for Schmdit in Washington next Tuesday.

Listen to the entire Boehner news conference here.

What "flap over her inaccurate resume has made her "radioactive." The Enquirer steadfastly has refused to report one of the most explosive stories of the race -- that she claims a false college degree?

Do none of your editors or reporters think this is worthy of covering?

Or has the story been spiked from the highest levels?

What kind of journalism is this?

She emerged from a primary with a strong vote?? 30%???

John, we know you have to support Schmidt because she is the incumbent, but puh-leez, you are embarassing yourself when you stick your neck out for her like this.

That's one of the weakest endorsements I've ever seen. The Republican Congressional leadership automatically endorses the incumbent, and Boehner isn't doing much to hide that it's the only reason he's endorsing Schmidt.

I am looking forward to the Enquirer reporting on Mean Jean's resume flap. I imagine they're gathering more info as we speak, though I'm anxious to see the final story.

I have never read anything about an inaccurate resume from Schmidt. Surely something her opponents have invested. What's that about?

Anon 4:26 PM:

Try these links:
http://blog.oh02.com/2006/03/28/did-schmidt-pad-her-resume

http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/openers/index.ssf?/mtlogs/cleve_openers/archives/2006_03.html#125630

The first one contains links to an audio clip of the rather short-lived story on WLW before Clear Channel spiked the story.

It's not surprising that even the well-informed voters on this blog would be unaware of this. This is turning into one of the major story spikes of all time.

Now that the Enquirer has the links, I am sure they will cover the story.

No journalist -- and no media outlet -- with integrity would intentionally spike a major like that!

I'm sure Pergram is a good guy, but he should have known the answer to his question since it is GOP policy to support the incumbent.

Rob Portman has already "endorsed" Schmidt for the same reason.

A better question would have been "What would Jean Schmidt have to do to lose your personal endorsement?"

Hello. I am John Boehner's Conscience. Obviously, I'm not with John today, because he's in DC and I'm here in the tri-state, so that allows the Majority Leader to make all sorts of inaccurate and "unconscionable" remarks.

First and foremost, Boehner hasn't even heard about the bogus resume story yet, because the local media (with the exception of 700WLW) seemed to ignore it - at least so far.

Second, there weren't 12 candidates, there were 11. But that hardly proves crap. Any elections expert will tell you that an 11 candidate field is far less likely to produce the best candidate than a head to head race.

If the playing field were level in this race, Schmidt would already be dead. As it stands, she appears to be committing suicide anyway.

Boehner has to say what he said anyway though.

Jean Schmidt LIED on her resume for 16 years!

She claimed to have graduated from UC with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education and Social Studies.

Only one problem.

She didn't.

CEO's of major corporations have been forced to resign for the same thing.

The Head Coach of Notre Dame football resigned when he lied.

In the very first question of a press conference by the House Majority Leader, the media asked about Schmidt's bogus resume scandal.

All this, and not a single peep from the Enquirer yet, even though 700WLW shouted it from the mountaintop all day on Wednesday.

The Enquirer is run by incompetent morons.

Malia Rulon, you're smoking hot. But do your damned job.

Her "inaccurate resume"?

C'mon Malia, take a risk and make the leap to "falsified." As you know, when it's true, it ain't libel.

Most of the posts here miss the mark. Boehner said the most important thing and that is that she can and will turn out her supporters in far greater numbers than anyone else. Her leadership in the Ohio Right to Life organization goes very deep and her support in this area will remain strong. Murtha by the way seems to be flopping all over the place in his position and no one ran to support him with a vote. She was correct in what she said. Marines and people with common sense do not see a cut and run strategy in Iraq as the best going forward. And if she wins the primary, which she will, especially if McEwen crowd brings in the SNL crowd as in post above, she will win by a large margin. prediction, Jean by at least 10 % in primary and over 20% in election.

I think it is rather obvious why Congressman Boehner would back Jean Schmidt. Even though she gives a black eye to the Republican party and a disgrace to southern Ohio, Washington insiders make strage bedfellows.

I wonder who is so worried about Jean that they go to such tremendous efforts to discredit her every move?? Certainly not her constituents!! I see a post by Rob Portman? Really?? Seems you can name yourself anything you want when you post a comment.
Does anyone still remember the term Carpetbagger? I think it was a person who traveled from another area to try to get elected.
Sure seems to me that the effort behind getting Jean out of office is Bush hating democrats and not conservative republicans.
Does anyone know if it is legal to put political signs on highway right-of-ways?? I thought it wasn't, but Jeans opponent sure has a lot of signs around the interstate connectors!! Maybe because no one will let him put signs in their yard. Certainly not conservatives!
Conservatives unite and don't let them push out a truly conservative representative.

To "voting republican":

If you think she's a conservative, you don't know Schmidt!
