Home Sweet Home

Charles Sanders, the former mayor of Waynesville and perpetual congressional candidate, is trying something different this year.

He'll run in a district he actually lives in.

Sanders is running in Ohio's 3rd Congressional District, which includes part of Warren County and most of the Dayton area; and is represented these days by Republican Mike Turner, the former mayor of Dayton, who was re-elected with 62 percent of the vote in Nov. 2004.

Sanders ran against Rob Portman in the 2nd District no less than four times, never getting more than 28 percent of the vote. The last two times, he wasn't even a resident of the 2nd - his home town had been drawn out of the district by the Republicans, a piece of gerry-mandering Sanders believes was directed at him.

Fortunately for Sanders, there is no requirement that a congressional candidate live in the district where he or she is running, although it probably helps. Ask Bob McEwen if you don't believe it. They must merely be residents of the state.

Last year Democratic party leaders in the 2nd District - Hamilton County chair Tim Burke and Clermont County chair Dave Lane among them - cringed at the thought of running out Sanders as their candidate; and lined up behind Paul Hackett.

"The blunt reality is that Charles Sanders can't win the 2nd District seat,'' Burke said last May.

Sanders is still fuming over that, blaming Burke, Lane and others for sinking his candidacy.

"If I had won that primary, Jean Schmidt would not have been able to beat me,'' Sanders said Friday. "No doubt in my mind.''

Charlie Sanders is right. The people of the Second District really do want someone crazy like him representing them. Someone with his bizarre sense of out of date fashion. Someone who will fly off the handle and rant about topics he does not understand. Someone already run out of public office by the people of his own community who know him best. Wait, we already have that.

Sanders is the face of our party. He deserves our respect and nomination to run for congress again.

I hope more people like Charlie run for office so we can clean house in Congress.

GO SANDERS!

What a face it is too, maybe you should pick Natalie Portman as the face of your party, you might actually win once in a while

The "anonymous" that posted that Charlie Sanders is the face of our party is so far our of touch with reality that it frightens me...or they are a Rebpulican, which scares the living daylights out of me anyway. Either way, Charlie Sanders is not now, nor has he ever been the face of the Democratic Party. He could be the face of the Insane Party, or maybe even the Republicans if he tried to be a little more like Ken Blackwell. Every time Sanders speaks, every person in the room is treated to a trip to crazy town. The man is a joke inside the Democratic Party. Tim Burke has far too much etiquette to speak so honestly. Fortunately, I am not burdened by any such sensibilities.

That is just not true. Sanders has been our standard bearer for several consecutive races. He has taken the arrows, he has fought the good fight.

He stands up for the little guy and wants the rich to pay more than their fair share, just to make it more fair!

yes sir, in the spirit of jackson we need to stand up and support Charlie and back him as he works to unseat Mike Turner.

Wilkinson should do a little research before he hits the submit button. Bob McEwen's home is in Anderson Township, which is in the 2nd District.

As for Sanders, of course Democrats don't want him to be the face of the party. His face is a black one, and we all know that the role of blacks in the Democratic Party is to shut up and do what they're told. White Democrats were fine with him running when nobody wanted to take on Portman, but as soon as they had no further use for him he was dumped like yesterday's trash.

I believe Wilkinson has his facts right, doesnt McEwen live in that plosh estate outside of DC in Virginia? Or maybe Howard is wrong, the former congressman lives in his nice 2 room condo in Anderson Township.

No anonymous, Wilkinson got it wrong. "Ask Bob McEwen if you don't believe it. They must merely be residents of the state."

In this post, Wilkinson is granting that McEwen is legally a resident of Ohio. McEwen's Ohio residence is in Anderson Twp, which as I correctly noted before, is in the 2nd District.

Howard,

My name is Sanjay Mahajan and I am campaign manager of the Sanders for US Congress Campaign. Please note that Charles Sanders is a Vietnam War Era Military Veteran and a current Senior Deacon. He served as Mayor of Waynesville from 1996 thru 2000 winning 2 popular elections despite being only 1 of 3 African Americans in a town of 2,500 people. This result in itself indicates that Mr. Sanders has appeal amongst various demographic groups and has the ability to compete in the 3rd district democratic primary and the general election assuming that the voters endorse on May 2, 2006.

Mr. Sanders was correct in my opinion that should he have advanced beyond the primary given strong endorsement of Hackett by Democratic Party in both boots on the ground and fundraising that he would have won the general election. Anyway, whatever happened in the 2nd district is now past history. Mr. Sanders is now running in the 3rd district and it is up to the voters to endorse on election day.

Please note that Sinnard, Parker, and Wulsin are running in the 2nd district. Sanders is running in the 3rd district. Out of these 4 current candidates for US Congress, Sanders finished in 2nd place with only Dr. Wulsin receiving more votes. Both Sinnard and Parker are viable candidates in the 2nd district and Sanders is a viable candidate in the 3rd district. All 4 of these candidates are quality candidates and it is unfortunate that the party made a decision to endorse in 2005 special election after the candidates filed petitions to run for US Congress. We will know on May 2, 2006 how all these candidates will fare should the party in the 2nd district and 3rd district make and stick to decision of not endorsing in the primary which is the right decision to make in my opinion.

In closing, Mr. Sanders has a good chance of being elected the democratic nominee on May 2, 2006 given that he was the first and only democratic candidate to defeat Rob Portman in portions of the 2nd district which were previously in the 6th district. Sanders received more votes than Portman based on composite vote total in Pike and Scioto Counties in 2002. These are rural counties. Sanders did better than Portman by majority vote in these 2 counties in 2002 and Hackett outperformed Schmidt in these 2 rural counties in 2005.

The Sanders campaign looks forward to a vigorous campaign on May 2, 2006 and may the best candidate win!

Yet another Sanders loss.....
I wish I had a nickel for every dollar that has been wasted on Sanders campaigns. Charlie shot himself in the foot with his bogus claims of racism and profiling against the Waynesville Police Dept. Charles Sanders will never win any election ever again. What's great about this is the fact that he single-handedly destroyed his political career by making false allegations in a weak attempt to make a name for himself.

What's so insane about wanting what's best for one's community and country? Mr. Sanders speaks from the heart, sincerely challenging us all to look past our own individual needs. If not throwing huge sums of money at behemoth corporations and leaving nothing to support American citizens is insane, then I say open up the asylum.

Obviously, nothng has trickled down from the neocon vision of unbridled capitalism. People are unable to afford basic healthcare, there are not enough jobs that will support our families and the corporate hacks keep sending money to Iraq or giving tax breaks to those least in need.

We could use a little less "me" and a little more "us." Sanders appears to be asking for just that.
